I agree with you.
I was watching a short video by Robert Nugent recently and he mentioned (in shocked way) a family prayerbook from a parish in the west of Ireland (I can't remember exactly where) that had the Buddhist Verse on taking the Three Refuges:
"I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma (Teaching) and the Sangha (Community)."

Fr. William Johnston, originally from Belfast, spent over 40 years in Japan and was very familiar with Buddhism, especially Zen. He practiced with some Buddhists occasionally but not the traditional training which requires the taking of the Three Refuges. He felt he couldn't / wouldn't make that commitment as his refuge was in Jesus,
the Gospel and the Community of Believers.
I think he was right about that.

 

I agree. Jesus said " I am the Way the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me." That is unambiguous so I too am a fundamentalist in this regard. Thomas Merton ended up in terrible spiritual trouble by going into Buddhism and studying their methods of meditation. A tragedy.

 

He put himself in grave danger in my opinion.

 

Sigh. I am getting really old I guess. To me this is all word salad. A roundabout way of saying he was curious and delved into things best left alone.
