We head off, God willing, for a little R&R in 2 weeks up to the Adirondacks and was looking for any recommendation on a few books to read. I just finished reading Lord of The World and I'm into this style - I don't want anything too heavy or "academic". Would appreciate your suggestions.
Miker- I would recommend just about anything by Michael D. O'Brien. A few of my favorites: (1) Father Elijah (apocolyptic - similar vein to Lord of the World) (2) Theophilus ("story" of the guy to whom St. Luke addressed his Gospel and Acts) (3) The Father's Tale (long, but moving and enjoyable, story of a Canadian widower and his journey when he travels to Europe to save his son from a religious "cult") (4) Voyage to Alpha Centauri (futuristic/apocolyptic novel about a space journey to an "earth-like" planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri - also long, but thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking) Any of those four is well worth the read! Enjoy your vacation!
Agree with Fr Elijah (although it needs editing. It gets lost about 2/3 of the way through). The Poisonwood Bible ? A good novel. Ralph Martin's "The Fulfillment of all desire." The Cardinal's Hat by Mary Hollingsworth is OK as well, if you like those kind of Church/political stories. Happy Holidays. B
Hang on, another... it's next to The Cardinal's Hat on my book shelf and it's the one I meant to reccommend first - it's just called The Red Hat by Ralph McInerny and it's a good read. Also, if you have never tried the English writer Jessie Childs.. she has written a great (pro-Catholic) historical novel called "God's Traitors" just out now this week in paperback. She wanted to call it "Recusants" but her publishers said no one would know what that meant.. (!!),, its about the persecution of Catholics in Elizabethan England and she has really done her research.. it's very convincing.
