I write this not to be nasty, but so many Catholics think that because someone is a priest, Bishop , Cardinal or even, dare I say Pope they must be holy , even saintly people. This is not so.

I remember my mother called up to the monastery where I was and said how blessed I was to live amongst saints. When I told her they were not all saints she was bewildered and asked why not?

But you know looking back on it most of them were very, very holy. A few of them really saintly.

So my mother was mostly right.

But the bad ones land a big big punch for their weight

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I cannot really speak to the life of ABFS, or the life of anyone else for that matter. All I can say is that I once thought I had control over some things, now I realize I have none. I bring matters up to Jesus in my heart, and he resolves them, with no effort of my own. I don't always get the things I want, and crosses still come, but they don't overwhelm me anymore. I simply turn my attention and affection to Jesus and rest in Him, and everything changes. I stand and watch in awe. I accept what is put before me with less and less resistance, and Light comes. I don't live in religious life, but I can see how personalities and personal agendas might get in the way. All I can say is that there is freedom in Jesus, and if there isn't, it is because I am blocking Him out somehow (not speaking about others lives here, only my own). Thorns, stones, birds, and so on.

Romans 8:6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Sometimes I think about the people who lived closely with Marcial Maciel and were his victims; what a distorted image they must have taken of the entire church because of all the harm caused by just one man, which continues even after his death.

Thanks, Padraig. You know, this godly man's remains are being fought over by two dioceses in the USA. We should not to be at war with one another, but at war against the spirit of this age (in myself and in the Church)!

Maybe I'll just play this clip as my homily this Sunday! That would shake everyone up; then my good Bishop would get wind of it and...

I love Fulton so much. I believe I have read allq his books.

Pope Pius xii, another of my great favourites loved Fulton. He has everything going for him and pretty well everything changed in an instance when he went with his conscience.

Sometimes the choice between good and evil can be as simple as that. Fulton choose to do the right thing and spent the rest of his life paying for it

Yes! And it was the example of a Chinese girl martyr (Little Li) who gave her life in atoning for the desecration of the Holy Eucharist by Communists, that Bishop Fulton Sheen carved out a daily hour of Adoration in his busy schedule, for the remainder of his life!

Fulton always seems to me to have been very, very Holy indeed, even as a young priest and seminarian. But I think the thing that turned a corner for him into true Sanctity was when he made a promise to always spend an hour in adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament each day. He was a very, very busy man indeed and this was often very difficult for him. Also he said at times very cold and dark times whilst doing it. But he stuck to it no matter what. I believe this was the true source of his wonderful homilies, writings and his marvellous TV show. He went straight to the Divine Well.

The same could be said of other saints like Mother Angelica and Mother Teresa.

    Adoration.

We feed on the Light, reminds me of heliotropism. Always turning to face the Light.
