Thought I'd start a thread to see what we're all reading, (or maybe inspire us to read).

Currently, Im making my way through Pope Benedict's book "Jesus of Nazerath", and I'm enjoying it.
    I've a big list prepared for 2015.
Part of my plan for this year is to read no fiction, only catholic books.

So, what's the story with you, do you read much, and if so, what's on your kindle at the moment?

I'm trying to read all the bible this year but it will probably take me more than a year. I am following this 1 yr program.

Apart from that I want to finally read St Augustine's book confessions. I admit I need to get off the internet and read more. Reading spiritual and religious books is so important to kindling the faith. Good thread.

Thanks for the great link Indy.
I'f only there were 25 hours in the day. So much to read!
Right of the bat I see we've got "Confessions" on both our lists!!
I partially read it years ago but want to re-read it.
One of my favorite quotes of all time is in that book:
"All the time I searched for Thee without, Thou wert within". Wonderful.

I just started Interior Castle again after not making it through several years ago.
I think I am more "ready" now for what it entails.

Mark Mallett, Charlie Johnston, Janet, and the posters at Mother of God Forum :)

I'm not kidding, everything else seems . . . trivial (cept the Word of God of course)

I am not much of a reader. I really only read here and try to keep up with Mark Mallett. That's all I have time for. But Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Fr. MIchael Gaitely is on my nightstand, as my first read when things slow down. I enjoyed AC Emmerich's books on Mary, Mary Magdoline, and the Passion. So, after Gaitely I'd like to read the 3 books she has written on the life of Jesus...every day of his ministry. I will drink in every word of those books.

He and I- the writings of Gabrielle Bossis, a French nurse who was receiving locutions from Jesus. She kept a diary. Nothing prophetic, just a beautiful work about the love of Jesus and how He works in our hearts. I first heard about this book from Pelianito's blog. Like all private revelation, nothing new or added, but confirmation of the Heart of Our God.

I love that book and turn to it often to just pick it up and read randomly. 90% of the time I go right to something that is very personal and needed for me in prayer!! It is an amazing book!!

Thank you Kathy for sending it to me ;)

I have incorporated many things that Jesus revealed to Gabrielle in my own prayer most notably this that I say often. What I have bolded came from that book:

Lord Jesus, I love you! Sweet Mary I love you and trust in you both. Help that love and trust to grow stronger each day with every thought and prayer. Please have mercy on us all and save every soul. Reign in all hearts as you reign in creation forever. Amen

I am still reading "Mystical City of God" by Venerable Mary Agreda. It is quite long and I pick it up from time to time where I left off. I read a chapter last night and was quite confused over something so maybe you all can help me. The chapter was about the death of Mary's parents while she was in the temple. In this book as a child, Mary always saw and interacted with the 1,000 of angels that were assigned to surround her at all times to protect her from birth. She prayed to God to send all her angels to her father on his deathbed and to reveal themselves to him. They obliged and went to Joachim. He saw them and they revealed to him on his deathbed the true nature and plan for Mary to be the Mother of God. Mary did not know this yet but it was a great grace for Joachim to help in the pains of his own death to be filled with this great knowledge and joy. This came at a cost to Mary though. From this point on she was not able to see them again and hear them and interact. She did not know this and thought she had offended God since she no longer saw the angels or heard from God. So here is where I am confused.

We hear all the time in our Catholic faith that when the angel Gabriel came to Mary to reveal God's plan, he said what is translated into English, "Hail, full of Grace". Mary was quite alarmed by this greeting being a very well versed and educated person from scripture. This would have alarmed her because this type of greeting would have had her name after the Hail typically in scripture and not the "full of Grace". Tim Staples book, "Behold Your Mother" really digs deep into this as why this greeting was so important. So my confusion is whether Mary was just alarmed by this greeting and puzzled by it or was she alarmed also by the fact of an angel of the Lord appearing to her with this greeting. Surely, she was not alarmed at seeing an angel since she saw thousands of them most of her young life.

    Help?? Thoughts??

....Though I am not of the opinion that 72 hours is what we will need to plan for.....

Andy, I have the similar questions about The Mystical City of God and your post prompted me to order a book that I've been wanting to read for a while by Father Rene Laurentin about the Life of Mary as Revealed by the Mystics. He analyses and compares the revelations of Agreda, Emmerich and Valtorta among a few others. When I read the book, I can offer his opinions on the differences.

I keep reading and re-reading the Maria Valtorta books, which take me to the Holy Land or into Jesus' Heart every time I open them. What a gift! I have also recently read a volume of condensed messages from father Ottavio Michelini, which Peter B. recommended in the forum which I also highly recommend. This one will make you want to pray more for our shephards & Mother church. I also, read Sulema's books, after many people whose opinions I value recommended her. And I also highly recommend those books for anyone who reads French as the messages are relatively short, very rich and give the essence of how to live to face the difficulties of these times.

I would also love to read the works compiled by Luisa Piccarretta if someone could counsel me on where to start.

Andree, in regard to Luisa Piccarreta's works, I would start with Volume 12 (which an be found at the catholicdivinewill.blogspot) and follow along with the exceptional audio programs on Volume 12 provided by Father Robert Young (which can be found at the divinewilltallahassee site). These writings and programs have been such a blessing for us - a daily spiritual retreat! He also has a number of introductory audio programs posted at this site.

Thank you Leo for those website, I've finally got some time to read the books.

However, I can't see where to buy a book version on those websites?

What book version do you recommend?

I'm not sure if this is any good but Gabriel is an Archangel and presumably more splendid in majesty than yer orn'ry angel. With a message like that, he would have looked indescribably magnificent, perhaps more than any angel Mary had ever seen before so she was going to wonder what exactly he was going to say to her. Just my guess.

Last year I read and really loved the Life of Mary as seen by the Mystics, by Edward Ryan, which is an overview of Our Lady's life, culled from the works of Mary of Agreda and Catherine Emmerich, among others. It is a most beautiful book and a little less daunting than the very long works which require a lot of persistence!
