Wow, so I've been looking into this since you wrote this post, and i can't believe these verses are missing from the newer translations of the Catholic bibles! Do you know why they were removed?
This passage comes from the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible prepared by St. Jerome in the 4th century, primarily from Hebrew and Aramaic sources (and, for some books, from other ancient texts available at the time). The Vulgate was the official Bible of the Catholic Church for more than a thousand years and was used in the liturgy and at Holy Mass. Today, most modern Catholic translations are no longer translated from the Vulgate but from the oldest available Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. In the case of the Book of Tobit, translators usually rely on the Greek text of the Septuagint, especially ancient manuscripts such as the Codex Sinaiticus, which differs from the Vulgate at certain points. As a result, some passages found in the Vulgate, such as this one, are either not present in the same form or are absent altogether in many modern Catholic translations. This is not a change in Catholic text, but rather the result of using a different textual tradition as the basis for translation.
Thank you for explaining. I figured it was something like that, but I long for the continuity that the Church preserved for so long. I feel that we live in another age of so-called "Renaissance," when the intellectuals of the world seem to think that those who have gone before us were not as enlightened as we are...except for the very earliest of ages. In all the centuries between, no one knew what they were doing, it seems.
It's funny you mention this because it is so true and has been on my heart so much. It is also because the Gospels have been opening themselves up to me as of late. Giving me much more clarity than ever. And it's like... Did I just never get it when people spoke about the Gospels or was it that people never actually grasped their content? I am not saying I know it all, but it's as though there is a severe problem conveying/transmitting what's in the Gospels today. Now apply that to all of scripture. I kind of understand now why Mary Magdalene lived for thirty years in a cave in France after Jesus passed. She was focused on practicing what Jesus taught. First hand disciple and all. It's not about what people think it's about tending to God within.
Yes. Agree The Douay Rheims Bible I have was given to my maternal grandmother when my grandfather passed away in the early sixties. There is a picture of Pope John XXIII on the flyleaf. Though I depend most frequently on the relatively new translation of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, 2nd edition ( the best footnotes I've encountered), I do have a OT Douay Version from 1961. It contained the verses in question!
