I often think about the case of Abraham, who was called out of the cradle of paganism—Babylon—to become the father of circumcision, the ritual that foreshadows Baptism. Refusing to baptize the child will not help curb any agnostic influence Steve may have over his son, especially if it is fueled by a sense of rejection.

  2. There are alot of Catholics in the world.
Are there meant to be no rules.? This false compassion where we constantly stand with the person moaning about not wanting to do what they must. If a Priest feels the baby will not be brought up Catholic, does He baptise them anyway? My grandaughter just got baptised and yes there are things that are important and must be done. Preparation, showing up at Church for a little while. Going public with private Church things that are between him and his Priest I find childish.

I agree. If you want your baby to be baptized quickly after being born, you can attend the classes and get everything done while still pregnant. That's what I do.

During Covid, my parish (I was still attending a novus ordo parish at the time) postponed all baptisms right after my son was born. I had no way of knowing when that baptism would be happening, and because of Covid, I felt my son was more in danger of death than usual. So I baptized him myself when he was 10 days old. Then 9 months later, when they finally were ready to baptize him, I took him in for the "baptism" so he could have it in his official records. I don't know if it was the right thing to do, but I did what I felt I must at the time.

  4. You did what you felt you must do. That is frightening. I would have done the same. Plus I feel they made the Covid era very much a state of emergency publicly.
A Priest had said to me that some people don't bother with the Church unless they want that baptism, that funeral, wedding etc we have enough bad Catholics and we don't need any more. People have this idea that Baptism will guarantee a spot in Heaven but without the love and knowledge of Jesus and the Church, it will not do it.

In the preVII days this mandated process wasn't there. They simply baptised the baby for the sake of the baby in spite of the parents. There are many wonderful stories of a child being baptised without any church commitment from the parents and the child years later sometimes on their death bed returned to the Church. The power of the sacrament cannot be overstated.
I would not hesitate to baptise my child if I felt death was even a remote possibility.

Yes, I pray for a return to this.

Yet God also places a very high value on humility and obedience to His Church. He will take all things into consideration.

  7. I baptised 2 of my grandkids. Now they are all baptised in the Church thank God!

  8. But honestly if a baby is sick or a person dying, I'm sure the Priest would accommodate. I know of a few instances. How many people are baptised on their deathbed?

That was always my understanding. The Grace from Baptism is infinitely more powerful than any amount of cathechesis for the parents. It is quite possible that the baptised child might be the means of conversion of the parents used by God.

Does a policy of giving precedence for Church rules over God’s Sacrament almost border, unintentionally I would hope, on Pelagianism?

The eternal soul of the child absolutely should get first priority, in my opinion.

A baby can die at any moment, even nowadays. Cot deaths, for example. A baby should be baptised as soon as possible. No baby’s eternal destiny in Heaven should be put at risk for circumstances entirely out of its control.

  12. I'm in my 60s and there has always been a certain order to it. It is a Sacrament and there are rules. They are not my rules.

I think the same way. In fact, one thing I agreed with about Pope Francis, back when he was an archbishop, was that he did not deny Baptism to the children of single mothers, because there was a certain degree of virtue in the fact that these women carried their pregnancies to term despite possible external pressures to terminate them.

There was a more explicit aspect of exorcism in the sacrament of Baptism in the rite as it existed before the conciliar reforms: an initial protection against demonic activity from early childhood onward. One testimony that I find important is that of the Swedish cardinal Anders Arborelius, who says that, many times in Sweden, it is the children who bring their parents back to the Church through preparation for First Eucharist, a sacrament that is an extension and deepening of the initial grace we receive in Holy Baptism.

I hadn't read this thread as I thought it was a joke to be honest a bit of banter.

Looks like what I said back in 2021 is actually unfolding

I've come late to this discussion (reluctant to pursue what I thought was unintelligible), but the Church Fathers stood firmly against extraterrestrial beings, except for Origin, but then he held other heretical positions, himself. The Church, Herself, rejects the claim...

So why dream about it. What will be released will be part of a great deception which some modern day theologians will embrace. Please run the other way no matter how much ET tickles your imagination!
