From Shalom World News Fb page: From 1968 to 1971, in the Cairo suburb of Zeitoun, a mystery unfolded that still stirs the soul—yet remains little known to many Christians today. Above St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, vast crowds reported seeing a radiant woman clothed in light, identified as the Virgin Mary, appearing in silence above the domes. What makes Zeitoun so striking is not only the vision itself, but the people who witnessed it. Christians, Muslims, skeptics, Egyptians, and foreigners gathered beneath the night sky in awe. Even Egypt’s second president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, a Sunni Muslim, was among those who saw the phenomenon and accepted it as authentic. Witnesses spoke of Mary bowing before the cross, luminous doves, flashes of light, and a deep peace descending over the crowd like a breath from heaven. She spoke no words, yet her silence seemed filled with mercy, tenderness, and consolation. The apparitions began on April 2, 1968, when Egypt and the Middle East, like now, were still wounded by war, grief, and uncertainty. That is part of what makes this hidden story so moving: in an hour of darkness, many believed heaven answered with light. The Coptic Orthodox Church recognized the apparitions, and Pope St. Paul VI also sent delegates to Egypt to study the events, receiving favorable reports, though the Vatican did not issue its own formal judgment because the apparitions took place in an Orthodox church. To this day, Zeitoun remains one of the most extraordinary and least-known Marian events of the modern era—a quiet reminder that even in silence, heaven still speaks, and even in darkness, light still comes.
