One of these two I think has really great, really inspirational writing. I read it and I think, well, he certainly hit the nail on the head...and then, there's the other one and it's almost not easy to know which is which. One of the two wrote great prayers. That must be Newman.
So, Newman was only canonized in 2019?

There is already so much to study, really.

I love both of these saints. The quote from St John Newman is a favorite of mine. It has gotten me through some dark times on my journey. He is a convert from Anglicanism. Yes, he was only recently canonized.
St. John Neumann was a Redemptorist priest from Europe who came to the US. He walked and walked in wilderness to establish churches. I go to Mass in a Redemptorist mission parish In Annapolis and I feel his watchful presence when I go by his statue.

St. John Henry Newman is dear to my heart. He wrote my favorite quote of all time, that I have shared with many who are suffering one thing or another. I'll have to take a pic of it (in a book I have) and share it when I get a moment. It's long enough that I don't have it memorized.

Is it the quote at the beginning of this thread? I love it, too,

No, it's a quote about suffering that I read in one of my books in my early twenties. I pull it out from time to time to reread it.

  7. St. John Henry Newman WARNED Us About THIS Church Crisis! ~ Fr. Perricone

In this powerful homily, Father reflects on the timeless wisdom of St. John Henry Newman, whose words — “Holiness must always be preferred to peace”

He saw the heresies creeping in back in his day. This is no overnight occurrence but those ugly termites have been nibbling away for 2 centuries at the bark of Peter. I remember him saying that its always the same heresies in every generation. The devil just dresses them up in new costumes.

I'd love to read that quote, if you can find it. My mother passed away on St John Henry Newman's feast day a few weeks ago, after bypassing several other big feasts that we thought might take her.

I'm away from home on a trip right now, so can't get to the book it's in, but I'll see if I can find it online! I'm sorry about the loss of your mother. May she rest in peace!

It is not God's way that great blessings should descend without the sacrifice first of great sufferings. If the truth is to be spread to any wide extent among the people, how can we dream, how can we hope, that trial and trouble shall not accompany its going forth.

    I found the quote!

" He “calls thee by thy name.” He sees thee, and understands thee, as He made thee. He knows what is in thee, all thy own peculiar feelings and thoughts, thy dispositions and likings, thy strength and thy weakness. He views thee in thy day of rejoicing, and thy day of sorrow. He sympathizes in thy hopes and thy temptations. He interests Himself in all thy anxieties and remembrances, all the risings and fallings of thy spirit. He has numbered the very hairs of thy head and the cubits of thy stature. He compasses thee round and bears thee in His arms; He takes thee up and sets thee down. He notes thy very countenance, whether smiling or in tears, whether healthful or sickly. He looks tenderly upon thy hands and thy feet; He hears thy voice, the beating of thy heart, and thy very breathing.

" Thou dost not love thyself better than He loves thee. Thou canst not shrink from pain more than He dislikes thy bearing it; and if He puts it on thee, it is as thou wilt put it on thyself, if thou art wise, for a greater good afterwards."
