Msgr. Stephen Rossetti Exorcist Diary #367: Cast Aside the Despair of Witchcraft! Some time ago, one of our exorcists was traveling on a plane. Conversing with the young woman seated next to him, she asked him his occupation. He responded that he was a Catholic priest. “Oh,” she said, “You and I are the same. I practice witchcraft.” The priest retorted, “If you practice witchcraft, we are not the same.” Similarly, a young woman died who self-identified as a practicing Catholic. During the funeral services, it was publicly and proudly proclaimed that she actively practiced witchcraft, which was said to be an important part of her spiritual identity. Some family and friends did not perceive any contradiction, and lauded her for it. I continue to be distressed by the public embracing of witchcraft and the occult, especially among our young people. These two incidents exemplify a modern major failure in catechesis. It suggests that many are spiritually being formed more by the popular culture than by the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Bible directly and explicitly condemns divination and witchcraft calling it an "abomination" (Dt 18:10-12). The Catholic Catechism (#2117) echoes this strong judgment calling these occult practices as "gravely contrary to the virtue of religion."+ And yet @Witchtok currently boasts over 40 billion views. Nothing could be more antithetical to PRAYER than MAGIC. The practitioners of magic do not petition the one God but rather attempt to obtain what they want through their own efforts at manipulating “spiritual forces”. Christian prayer is based upon a relationship with God and trust in God’s providence. Magic is not based upon a relationship with God and does not trust in His providence.++ Exorcists know that practicing the occult may indeed tap into spiritual forces, but its results always come from the Evil One, regardless of the practitioner’s intention or their initial appearances. In short, in PRAYER we say: "God's will be done." In MAGIC, the practitioner in effect says: "My will be done." The former is the prayer of the saints; the latter is the stance of Satan and his minions. The Christian believes in the one God who hears our every prayer and responds with Divine generosity. God may not give us what we want, but we trust that our loving God will give us what we truly need, even if we cannot perceive it at the time. I know from direct experience that more than a few witches are upset by these words and actively curse us. But we pray for you. Cast aside the despair of witchcraft and the dark world. Join us in the true Source of all joy and peace. "Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overcome you" (Jn 12:35). ------------- +See Exorcist Diary 361: Can a Witch's Curse Kill? ++See Exorcist Diary 189: Magic vs. Faith +++Here is the link for the holy hour on All Hallows Eve: link. I recently had a little chat about that with a group of young married couples. We are not aware of the idolatrous bombardment we suffer daily. Many people read the horoscope every day, even if only out of curiosity. That seemingly trivial act is a small door we open to evil, since we unconsciously associate daily events with some phrase read in the horoscope without fully realizing it. It is then that we run the risk of giving in to curiosity and delving further into obscurantism. But for a family with young children, one of the important tasks or challenges in raising them is to avoid cursing their behavior, comparing them to others (siblings or friends), or making rash judgments or dire predictions such as “you deserve this or that,” “you’re a disaster,” “your brother does it much better,” “you seem stupid,” “you’re beyond help,” “something even worse is going to happen to you,” etc., because we are in effect unconsciously casting curses on them, and they are much more powerful than we realize. Furthermore, we are inciting sin against the fourth commandment, and that sin always brings extensive misfortune upon our children. On the other hand, praying with God for our children and making specific requests for their well-being is the most powerful intercession one person can offer on behalf of another, since exercising parental authority is immediately heeded by God. This plea is answered every time when it is also supported by both parents, and when the child is aware of the desire his parents are asking for and also participates in the prayer. That's when miracles happen.
I don't suppose you ever heard anything about the Witches of Galicia? Apparently they are quite famous?
Yes, of course I’ve heard about the witches in Galicia, and all over northern Spain there are goblins and witches living in caves. Their feet are like those of a bird, and they continuously comb their golden hair as they wait for a lost, unsuspecting peasant. Witches’ sabbaths are very common in the Basque Country. Meetings of witches who danced around a fire with a male goat to celebrate the summer solstice. They consumed psychotropic concoctions and flew on brooms or sticks. They were executed by the courts of the Inquisition, according to the stories. But in Galicia, above all, the Santa Compaña is famous. It is a legend about a procession of souls in purgatory that walks the roads at nite, preceded by a living person who remembers nothing of their journey. This procession, which may carry a coffin that foreshadows death, is an ill omen, and its appearance is often considered a warning of an impending death.
Yes but the Sacred Company are not really withes are they? This is so like Ireland. So Celtic. They even make Halloween a Public Holiday in Spain. So interesting.
Galicia is very Celtic. Bagpipes are very typical. These roots come from the Suevi people, from northern Europe, who had to migrate due to the attacks of the Huns. Some migrated to Brittany and from there to the islands, while others descended to northern Spain and settled in Galicia. Likewise, other peoples had to migrate fleeing the attacks of the Huns: Goths, Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Merovingians, etc. They came from northern Europe seeking Roman protection and also joining the emperor's army.
I think this time of year when the light changes so much can be spooky. I notice this more living in the back of beyond. When I was driving back from Mass last night it was dead dark and I only saw one person the whole trip, not even other cars. On driving into the little piazza and I noticed the street light was out. Dark in the country is really dark. I can see why people were spooked. I remember my mother used to tell we children, 'Don't be afraid of the dead , they can't harm you, be afraid of the living'. This always seemed such good advice.
Nites in rural Spain are quite beautiful because they often allow you to see the stars. The cold is dry indoors, and the sunrises invite you to take a stroll bundled up. There’s a mistake we make regarding solar time, and it’s dinner. The Spanish meal schedule is poorly adjusted because dinner, the last meal of the day, usually takes place around 9:00 p.m., and I personally believe our meals should end when the sun gives way to darkness.
I suspect it might be better taken earlier for sleep. At night times our liver works like a little chemical factory to clean up after us and eating so close to sleep forces it to work overtime. A restless liver is what wakes us up at night. I might buy a telescope for my birthday.
I live in the countryside in Ireland. When I first came here I found the nights especially eerie and lonely and black. Even though there are lots of houses dotted throughout the countryside, when one comes from the city it takes getting used to. I used to have a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach especially on really stormy, wet, pitch dark nights in Winter. The wind can be really fierce here. I always remember my father's words on those occasions. He was born here and later moved to the city. One stormy night when I was a teenager, I was a bit afraid of the storm winds but my father reassured me, saying that the winds always die down again. Even in very bad storm gusts it dies back down after a while. He reassured me that it would not stay like that all night. And he was right. All things change, even the wind in the storms and we just have to have to hold on to hope and trust in the Lord. I am going forward through life amidst rainbows and storms, but with my head held high with pride, for I am a royal child. I feel that the blood of Jesus is circulating in my veins, and I have put my trust in the great mercy of the Lord. (St. Faustina, Diary 992)
Life can seem fine without God until things go bad, like storms, then everything changes. It reminds me of the saying that there are no atheists in a fox hole.
