Many years ago when I returned to the faith I had such a strong sense of my Irish ancestors praying me back to the Church from heaven and purgatory. Seeing this heritage and the "white" martyrdom they endured as well as "red" i have renewed appreciation for the gift they suffered to preserve. I am sure they are upholding Ireland in prayer now. There is a winnowing going on for sure.

A few years ago, I met an African priest at a retreat my wife and I attended. We got to talking and he asked me about my background-which is Irish-American- my grandparents were born in Ireland. And I mentioned it’s sad of the loss of faith both in US and Ireland. Well, this priest just smiled so broadly and said don’t worry- God has a plan. He then shared and thanked me that my Irish ancestors brought the faith at great cost to Africa with all the missionaries that went there. He personally attested that he would not have known Jesus without the Irish! And now God was working through the African Church to re-evangelize the Church and people in Ireland and America. He said it was his great honor to be in America and many of his priest friends in Ireland to repay what was done for him and his family. He was so strong to say God is at work. And despite what it looks like , God has a plan and will remember what the Irish people did to spread the faith. And I believe this Communion of Saints is interceding in Heaven today for both Ireland and America. Does not mean this gets easier but it does mean God is in charge.
