Truth is in short supply. And fear is an effective weapon if you want to exert control. Just altogether disturbing.

It was actually the second wave that was the greatest killer in the Spanish flu.

The second wave was thought to be caused by a mutant more-virulent virus and to be spread by troop movements across Europe during World War I. There was reluctance to impose control measures, since they would interfere with the war effort. Most of the deaths occurred with the second wave.

If we, as a Church convert, all this will go away. If not it will get worse and worse.

    This is true.

But we need to get this pandemic into an historical perspective to counteract the fear narrative of the mainstream media, which lacks balance and sometimes verges on the hysterical.

It is important to look at the numbers of deaths (1.1 million worldwide) and realise chances of dying from covid are very, very low.

It is possible that the virus could get much worse. It is also possible that the morbidity of the virus is decreasing.

    Only time will tell.

Hospital Episodes and Appointments are at probably at a World modern all time low.

    Why?

    They are suspended. That's why.

    Why?

Guess.. a clue. a for instance.....we're probably actively treating less cancer patients since long, long long before the time I was born. Why, for instance, might that be? Do you think cancer cancer has just gone away?

Why was the third wave worse? Was it because more people were exposed to it in the 3rd wave? Unless we have good data, we cannot compare the 2 pandemics.

I'm not supporting mass lock downs or total suppression efforts by the way.

What I would support is the entire planet doing what they did at Nineveh.

But that''s never going to happen of course. Because this is not Ninevah.

No Sign of Sackcloth and ashes anywhere/

    Jonah Goes to Nineveh
3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:

Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

I know why, because the model predicting the expected Covid patients were and are still wrong completely , So massive damage to people's health waiting for procedures and scans etc due as I already stated in previous post.

Why are we not getting the daily non-covid death figures like cancer and heart disease that account for more deaths than Covid. But we still get the Covid cases numbers and deaths.

You have mentioned this before, Padraig.
It has stuck in my mind and I often think
about it. I truly believe you are right.

You're blessed Padraig. Make the most of it while you can. People down here would be shocked at what you describe and would full-on blame the Church for causing the virus. China gets a pass, probably because we're hoping they will buy more of our dairy produce.

Nothing's free in the Free State except the air we breathe. And now we have to wear a mask to breathe it inside public buildings.

What this virus has exposed is the extent to which all that remains of the Faith here is cultural Catholicism, something along the lines of France - that basket case of a country so admired by our leaders. We can't lay the blame completely at the feet of the politicians. The vast majority of them were raised in Catholic families and educated in Catholic schools. We all share the blame to some extent. I know that I didn't value the great treasure passed on to me at home and in school.

I watched Mass online yesterday from a Church in Cork. It was the vigil Mass although I didn't realise that until I heard the same readings at today's Mass. The Mass I watched today came from somewhere in England. The homilies couldn't have been more different. The priest in Cork (a member of a religious order) trotted out the usual welcome the stranger, give to the poor, etc. Nothing wrong with that except that he spun it as though the second command from Jesus surpasses or incorporates the first. That, in a nutshell, is the root of the apostasy in Ireland. The First Commandment has been discarded in favour of be a nice person. Jesus said that the second command is similar to the First but he also said that the First is the greatest Commandment.

The Mass in England seemed to be aimed at the youth of the parish but without the tin pan alley stuff we associate with youth Masses. Nobody at that Mass was left unaware of the importance of the First Commandment. The priest there managed in a few minutes to fit in the right to life, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the need for Confession and praying the Rosary as well as encouraging them to join in other parish devotions like the Divine Mercy, Adorations and the online Night prayers of the Church while they are on school break. He also reminded them of the availability of Confession during and after Mass. It was what he said about the 1st Commandment that impressed me - that without observing the 1st Commandment we won't be able to discern what is God's will when faced with difficult decisions in life and are liable to do wrong believing we are doing good (such as denying life to babies expected to be born with a disability). Can you imagine hearing that kind of homily at an Irish Mass? I can't and I haven't heard anything remotely like it in decades. We can't blame people for losing a faith that was never passed on to them or was watered down to be meaningless.

PS. Our churches aren't locked all the time - only during Mass.

I wouldn't use Sweden as a model. There is a suggestion that they used morphine on their elderly patients in nursing homes, effectively euthanising them. I suppose that's one way of keeping it under control.
