Feast day of Saint Gregory Barbargio, Bishop of Bergamo, Italy, died 1697
Gregorio was born on September 16, 1625 in Venice as the eldest of four children to the nobles Giovanni Francesco Barbarigo (a senator) and Lucrezia Leoni (d. 19 March 1631 - plague). His father brought a cousin to look after the children after the death of his wife. Barbarigo obtained a doctorate in both canon law and civil law on September 25, 1655 and was ordained to the priesthood on December 21, 1655.
He was named a domestic prelate of His Holiness just a few months after being ordained a priest. In April 1656 Father Gregorio was appointed to the Apostolic Signature of Justice and Grace and in 1656 - at the request of the pope - he organized the assistance to the Romans in the Trastevere area who had been stricken with the plague. He oversaw the care of the mothers and their children and the funerals of the deceased in this work. He nursed the sick, buried to dead, and comforted those frightened and in mourning.
Things moved fast for Father Gregorio because on July 9, 1657 the pope appointed him as Bishop of Bergamo. But before he accepted the post, Father Gregorio said a Mass with the intention to determine if it be God's Will for him to be a Bishop. During the Mass, Father Gregorio received the signal grace he sought and felt the concrete calling to become a Bishop. As Bishop, he inspected each of the 279 parishes of the diocese. Bishop Barbargio was successful in Bergamo and so the Pope made him Cardinal and assigned him to the Diocese of Padua. Again, Barbargio inspected all the parishes of the Diocese of Padua. At two papal conclaves, Cardinal Barbargio was nearly made pope. Pope Innocent IX asked Cardinal Barbargio to work on the reunification of the Eastern Churches to the Roman Catholic Church.
Cardinal Barbarigo fostered catechetical instruction and he traveled to each village in his diocese in order to teach and to preach to the people. His compassion to the poor was well known for he gave his household goods and his clothes to the poor for their comfort. He even sold his bed on one occasion to help them.

Barbarigo died after a brief illness on 18 June 1697 in Padua where he was interred in the diocesan cathedral. Pope John XXIII canonized Cardinal Barbargio in 1960; the latter pope held Barbarigo as a great role model and fostered a devotion to him since John XXIII was from Bergamo.

The first feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated on August 31, 1670, in Rennes, France, through the efforts of Fr. Jean Eudes (1602-1680). From Rennes, the devotion spread, but it took the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) for the devotion to become universal.


In all of these visions, in which Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary, the Sacred Heart of Jesus played a central role. The "great apparition," which took place on June 16, 1675, during the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi, is the source of the modern Feast of the Sacred Heart. In that vision, Christ asked St. Margaret Mary to request that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated on the Friday after the octave (or eighth day) of the Feast of Corpus Christi, in reparation for the ingratitude of men for the sacrifice that Christ had made for them. The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but His love for all mankind.

The devotion became quite popular after St. Margaret Mary's death in 1690, but, because the Church initially had doubts about the validity of St. Margaret Mary's visions, it wasn't until 1765 that the feast was celebrated officially in France. Almost 100 years later, in 1856, Pope Pius IX, at the request of the French bishops, extended the feast to the universal Church. It is celebrated on the day requested by our Lord-the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, or 19 days after Pentecost Sunday.

Feast day of Juliana Falconieri, Foundress of Women’s Servite Order, Religious, died 1340
Juliana was the niece of the Founder of the Servite Order of Priests, Saint Alexis Falconieri. She was the only child of her parents, born to them after a long time of being childless. Juliana was a devout girl and sought life as a religious, rather than being married. After the death of her parents, Juliana lived in community with other women who spent their days in prayer and works of mercy. Juliana was made Superior at the urging of the other sisters. Sister Juliana undertook great mortifications which in time, weakened her health. Juliana had been receiving Holy Communion three times a week, but her inability to keep food down deprived her of the Holy Communion. As death approached, this account of a Eucharistic Miracle is attributed to Sister Juliana:

“He hath made a memorial of His wonderful works” Let it be placed on record how eighteen days ago our Sister Juliana died and flew to Heaven with her spouse, Jesus; and it was in this manner.
Being more than seventy years old her stomach had become so weakened from her voluntary sharp penances, from fasts, from chains, from an iron girdle, disciplines, nightly vigils and spare diet, that she was no longer able to take or retain food. When she knew that because of this she must be deprived of the viaticum of the most sacred Body of Christ, no one could believe how much she grieved and wept, so much so that they were afraid she would die from the vehemence of her sorrow.
She, therefore, most humbly begged Father James de Campo Geggio that at least he would bring the most Holy Sacrament in a pyx and set it before her, and this was done. But when the priest appeared carrying the Body of Lord, she straightway prostrated herself upon the ground in the form of a cross and adored her Master.
Then her face became like the face of an angel. She desired, since she was not allowed to unite herself to Jesus, at least to kiss Him, but this the priest refused. She then begged piteously that over the burning furnace of her breast they would spread a veil upon which they might put the Host. This was granted her. But- O wonderful prodigy! – scarcely had the Host touched this loving heart than it was lost to sight and never more was found. Then Juliana, when the Host had disappeared, with a tender and joyous face, as if she were rapt in ecstasy, died in the kiss of her Lord, to the amazement and admiration of those who were present-to wit, of Sister Joanna, Sister Mary, Sister Elizabeth, Father James and others in the house.


Later the image of Jesus nailed to the cross in a circle like a Host was seen over the heart of Sister Juliana. She was made a saint in 1737.

After the death of Jehoiada,
the princes of Judah came and paid homage to King Joash,
and the king then listened to them.
They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers,
and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols;
and because of this crime of theirs,
wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.
Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD,
the people would not listen to their warnings.
Then the Spirit of God possessed Zechariah,
son of Jehoiada the priest.
He took his stand above the people and said to them:
“God says, ‘Why are you transgressing the LORD’s commands,
so that you cannot prosper?
Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.’”
But they conspired against him,
and at the king’s order they stoned him to death
in the court of the LORD’s temple.
Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him
by Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, and slew his son.
And as Zechariah was dying, he said, “May the LORD see and avenge.”

At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash.
They invaded Judah and Jerusalem,
did away with all the princes of the people,
and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.
Though the Aramean force came with few men,
the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power,
because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers.
So punishment was meted out to Joash.
After the Arameans had departed from him,
leaving him in grievous suffering,
his servants conspired against him
because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest.
He was buried in the City of David,
but not in the tombs of the kings.

Most Holy Virgin Mary, tender Mother of men, to fulfill the desires of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the request of the Vicar of Your Son on earth, we consecrate
ourselves and our families to your Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart, O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and we recommend to You, all the people of our country and all the world.
Please accept our consecration, dearest Mother, and use us as You wish to accomplish Your designs in the world.

The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was extended to the universal Church on May 4, 1944 by Pope Pius XII.

Feast day of Saint Silverius, Pope, died 537
Pope Silverius ruled the Holy See from 8 June 536 to his deposition in 537, a few months before his death. His rapid rise to prominence from a deacon to the papacy happened at the time when a king wanted to install a pro-Gothic pope just before the Gothic War. Later deposed by Byzantine general Belisarius, Pope Silverius was tried and sent to exile on the desolated island of Palmarola, where he starved to death in 537.

Feast day of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, seminarian, died June 21, 1591

Aloysius Gonzaga was born the eldest of seven children. As the first-born son, he was in line to inherit his father's title and status of Marquis. His father assumed that Aloysius would become a soldier, as that was the norm for sons of the aristocracy and the family was often involved in the minor wars of the period. His military training started at an early age, but he also received an education in languages and the arts. As early as age four, Aloysius was given a set of miniature guns and accompanied his father on training expeditions so that the boy might learn "the art of arms". At age five, Aloysius was sent to a military camp to get started on his training.
In 1576, at age 8, he was sent to Florence along with his younger brother, Rodolfo, to serve at the court of the Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici and to receive further education. While there, he fell ill with a disease of the kidneys, which troubled him throughout his life. While he was ill, he took the opportunity to read about the saints and to spend much of his time in prayer. He is said to have taken a private vow of chastity at age 9. In November 1579, the brothers were sent to the Duke of Mantua. Aloysius was shocked by the violent and frivolous lifestyle he encountered there.

Aloysius returned to Castiglione where he met Cardinal Charles Borromeo, and from him received First Communion on 22 July 1580. After reading a book about Jesuit missionaries in India, Aloysius felt strongly that he wanted to become a missionary. He started practicing by teaching catechism classes to young boys in Castiglione in the summers. He also repeatedly visited the houses of the Capuchin friars and the Barnabites located in Casale Monferrato, the capital of the Gonzaga-ruled Duchy of Montferrat where the family spent the winter. He also adopted an ascetic lifestyle.

The family was called to Spain in 1581 to assist the Holy Roman Empress Maria of Austria. They arrived in Madrid in March 1582, where Aloysius and Rodolfo became pages for the young Infante Diego. Aloysius started thinking in earnest about joining a religious order. He had considered joining the Capuchins, but he had a Jesuit confessor in Madrid and decided instead to join that order. His mother agreed to his request, but his father was furious and prevented him from doing so.

In July 1584, a year and a half after the Infante's death, the family returned to Italy. Aloysius still wanted to become a priest, but several members of his family worked hard to persuade him to change his mind. When they realized there was no way to make him give up his plan, they tried to persuade him to become a secular priest and offered to arrange for a bishopric for him. If he were to become a Jesuit he would renounce any right to his inheritance or status in society. His family's attempts to dissuade him failed; Aloysius was not interested in higher office and still wanted to become a missionary.


In November 1585, Aloysius gave up all rights of inheritance, which was confirmed by the emperor. He went to Rome and, because of his noble birth, gained an audience with Pope Sixtus V. On 25 November 1585 he was accepted into the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Rome. During this period, he was asked to moderate his asceticism somewhat and to be more social with the other novices.

Aloysius' health continued to cause problems. In addition to the kidney disease, he also suffered from a skin disease, chronic headaches and insomnia. He was sent to Milan for studies, but after some time he was sent back to Rome because of his health. On 25 November 1587, he took the three religious vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. In February and March 1588, he received minor orders and started studying theology to prepare for ordination. In 1590, it is said that, later that year, he had a vision in which the Archangel Gabriel told him that he would die within a year.

In 1591, a plague broke out in Rome. The Jesuits opened a hospital for the stricken, and Aloysius volunteered to work there. After begging alms for the victims, Aloysius began working with the sick, carrying the dying from the streets into a hospital founded by the Jesuits. There he washed and fed the plague victims, preparing them as best he could to receive the sacraments. But though he threw himself into his tasks, he privately confessed to his spiritual director, Fr. Robert Bellarmine, that his constitution was revolted by the sights and smells of the work; he had to work hard to overcome his physical revulsion.

At the time, many of the younger Jesuits had become infected with the disease, and so Aloysius's superiors forbade him from returning to the hospital. But Aloysius—long accustomed to refusals from his father—persisted and requested permission to return, which was granted. Eventually he was allowed to care for the sick, but only at another hospital, called Our Lady of Consolation, where those with contagious diseases were not admitted. While there, Aloysius lifted a man out of his sickbed, tended to him, and brought him back to his bed. But the man was infected with the plague. Aloysius grew ill and was bedridden by 3 March 1591, a few days before his 23rd birthday.

Aloysius rallied for a time, but as fever and a cough set in, he declined for many weeks. It seemed certain that he would die in a short time, and he was given Extreme Unction. While he was ill, he spoke several times with his confessor, the cardinal and later saint, Robert Bellarmine. Aloysius had another vision and told several people that he would die on the Octave of the feast of Corpus Christi. On that day, 21 June 1591, he seemed very well in the morning, but insisted that he would die before the day was over. As he began to grow weak, Bellarmine gave him the last rites and recited the prayers for the dying. He died just before midnight. As Fr. Tylenda tells the story, "When the two Jesuits came to his side, they noticed a change in his face and realized that their young Aloysius was dying. His eyes were fixed on the crucifix he held in his hands, and as he tried to pronounce the name of Jesus he died."

Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, occupied the whole land
and attacked Samaria, which he besieged for three years.
In the ninth year of Hoshea, king of Israel
the king of Assyria took Samaria,
and deported the children of Israel to Assyria,
setting them in Halah, at the Habor, a river of Gozan,
and the cities of the Medes.

This came about because the children of Israel sinned against the LORD,
their God, who had brought them up from the land of Egypt,
from under the domination of Pharaoh, king of Egypt,
and because they venerated other gods.
They followed the rites of the nations
whom the LORD had cleared out of the way of the children of Israel
and the kings of Israel whom they set up.

And though the LORD warned Israel and Judah
by every prophet and seer,
“Give up your evil ways and keep my commandments and statutes,
in accordance with the entire law which I enjoined on your fathers
and which I sent you by my servants the prophets,”
they did not listen, but were as stiff-necked as their fathers,
who had not believed in the LORD, their God.
They rejected his statutes,
the covenant which he had made with their fathers,
and the warnings which he had given them, till,
in his great anger against Israel,
the LORD put them away out of his sight.
Only the tribe of Judah was left.

St. Thomas More & St. John Fisher (Feast: June 22)


The lives of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher are very closely linked, and thus it is quite appropriate that the Church celebrate their feasts together.

They are both renowned Englishmen martyred within two weeks of each other for the same cause of defending religious liberty, the sanctity of marriage and Papal authority against State usurpation. They were both associates of King Henry VIII before his apostasy, and it was at his hands that they both suffered martyrdom.



Sir Thomas More was a distinguished statesman in the English Parliament. First and foremost, however, he was a faithful Catholic, a loving husband, and a devoted father. More was widely known for his “unfailing moral integrity, sharpness of mind, his open and humorous character, and his extraordinary learning." He was a close friend and confidant of Henry VIII, and the King himself eventually promoted Thomas to the prominent office of Lord Chancellor.

However, the two were alienated when Thomas refused to compromise his conscience and faith when Henry openly defied Church teachings and divorced his wife to marry Anne Boleyn, choosing instead to renounce the King’s friendship, his own public career, wealth and worldly prestige. Thomas was consequently imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually condemned and beheaded on July 6, 1535. He was named patron saint of statesmen and politicians by Pope John Paul II.



A friend of St. Thomas More’s, St. John Fisher also had a close connection to Henry VIII, having once been his tutor, and was a friend of the royal family. As the Bishop of Rochester, he was known as a man of great leaning and deep and unshakable faith. He was supported by the King and appointed to the lifetime position of Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

However, he too fell into disfavor with Henry when he also opposed the King’s unlawful divorce of Queen Catherine of Aragon. Bishop Fisher courageously warned Parliament of Henry’s encroaching powers over the Church in England in direct disregard of the Papal audit, and publicly preached against the divorce from the pulpit at the same time as Sir Thomas More was resigning his high office. By thus calling down the King’s fury on himself, the holy Bishop of Rochester suffered multiple imprisonments in the Tower, during which time he was made a Cardinal by the authority of Pope Paul III – and appointment which Henry rejected.

Fisher was condemned to be hung, drawn and quartered; and, although originally sentenced to be killed on June 24, the feast of St. John the Baptist, the King had a superstitious fear of executing him on that feast because of the strong resemblance of the deaths of these two saints, and instead had him beheaded – ironically just like John the Baptist after all – two days earlier, on June 22, 1535.



Thomas More and John Fisher were beatified together by Pope Leo XIII in 1886, and canonized together by Pius XI in 1935. One a layman and statesman, the other a priest and bishop – they stand together as models and heroes of religious freedom against encroaching government powers.

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent envoys to Hezekiah
with this message:
“Thus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah:
‘Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you
by saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over
to the king of Assyria.
You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done
to all other countries: they doomed them!
Will you, then, be saved?’”

Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it;
then he went up to the temple of the LORD,
and spreading it out before him,
he prayed in the LORD’s presence:
“O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim!
You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth.
You have made the heavens and the earth.
Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen!
Open your eyes, O LORD, and see!
Hear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God.

the virgin daughter Zion!
Behind you she wags her head,

“‘For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant,
and from Mount Zion, survivors.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.’

“Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria:
‘He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it,

nor cast up siege-works against it.
He shall return by the same way he came,

That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down
one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp.
So Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp,

Feast day of Saint Agrippina, Martyr, died 262
Her legend states that she was a blonde princess born of a noble Roman family, and that she was martyred during the reign of Roman Emperors Valerian. She was either beheaded or scourged to death.

Her body was said to have been taken to Mineo, Sicily, by three devout Christian women and their travels were aided by angels.

The Nativity of John the Baptist on June 24 comes three months after the celebration on March 25 of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel told the Blessed Mother that her cousin Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy, and June 24th is six months before Christmas. These feast days are celebrated by the Church in an interlinking way.

The Nativity of John the Baptist is one of the oldest feast days of the Christian church, being listed by the Council of Agde in 506 as one of that region's principal festivals, where it was a day of rest and, like Christmas, was celebrated with three Masses: a vigil, at dawn, and at midday.
The Nativity of John the Baptist is a high-ranking liturgical feast, kept in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches.

Saint John the Baptist, please pray for us. May we all have a blessed day and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

attacked Jerusalem, and the city came under siege.

his ministers, officers, and functionaries,
surrendered to the king of Babylon, who,

When Jesus finished these words,
the crowds were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority,
and not as their scribes.

Our Lady has requested that June 25th be celebrated as the Feast day of Our Lady Queen of Peace so that is what I will feature. This comes from a message she gave:
February 2, 1982

Our Lady was asked when She would like the Feast of The Queen of Peace to be celebrated. She smiled and said: "I would prefer that it take place June 25th. The faithful have come for the first time on that day, on the hill."

Queen of Peace is the last invocation of Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto. It happened during World War I that Pope Benedict XV added to the Litany of Loreto, the title and invocation “Queen of Peace.” This Pope of Peace desired that the Catholics of the world pray through Mary’s intercession as Queen of Peace for an end to the devastating world war.

A crown of twelve stars surrounds her head.
She holds out her hand and this is a pose that is somewhat different from her past poses...what does it mean? She tells us in a message on March 18, 2012
“Dear children! I am coming among you because I desire to be your mother - your intercessor. I desire to be the bond between you and the Heavenly Father - your mediatrix. I desire to take you by the hand and to walk with you in the battle against the impure spirit. My children, consecrate yourselves to me completely. I will take your lives into my motherly hands and I will teach them peace and love, and then I will give them over to my Son. I am asking of you to pray and fast because only in this way will you know how to witness my Son in the right way through my motherly heart. Pray for your shepherds that, united in my Son, they can always joyfully proclaim the Word of God. Thank you. ”

In the tenth month of the ninth year of Zedekiah’s reign,
on the tenth day of the month,
Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and his whole army
advanced against Jerusalem, encamped around it,
and built siege walls on every side.
The siege of the city continued until the eleventh year of Zedekiah.
On the ninth day of the fourth month,
when famine had gripped the city,
and the people had no more bread,
the city walls were breached.
Then the king and all the soldiers left the city by night
through the gate between the two walls
that was near the king’s garden.
Since the Chaldeans had the city surrounded,
they went in the direction of the Arabah.
But the Chaldean army pursued the king
and overtook him in the desert near Jericho,
abandoned by his whole army.

The king was therefore arrested and brought to Riblah
to the king of Babylon, who pronounced sentence on him.
He had Zedekiah’s sons slain before his eyes.
Then he blinded Zedekiah, bound him with fetters,
and had him brought to Babylon.

On the seventh day of the fifth month
(this was in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar,
king of Babylon),
Nebuzaradan, captain of the bodyguard,
came to Jerusalem as the representative
of the king of Babylon.
He burned the house of the LORD,
the palace of the king, and all the houses of Jerusalem;
every large building was destroyed by fire.
Then the Chaldean troops who were with the captain of the guard
tore down the walls that surrounded Jerusalem.

Then Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard,
led into exile the last of the people remaining in the city,
and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon,
and the last of the artisans.
But some of the country’s poor, Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard,
left behind as vinedressers and farmers.

Feast day of Saint Pelagius of Córdoba, martyr born 912, died 925 patron of abandoned children, torture victims

Pelagius was left by his uncle at the age of ten with the Caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III of al-Andalus. The uncle was intending to trade the boy, Pelagius for the Bishop Hermoygius, previously captured by the Moors. The exchange never occurred, and Pelagius remained a captive for three years. According to the testimony of other prisoners, his courage, faith and appearance was such that the Caliph was impressed with him. When Pelagius turned thirteen, the Caliph offered him his freedom if Pelagius converted to Islam. One account says that caliph had a homosexual attraction to Pelagius. The boy, having remained a pious Christian, refused the Caliph's advances, striking the monarch and insulting him. Enraged, Abd-ar-Rahman had the boy tortured for six hours and then dismembered Other accounts have him being shot from a catapult over the city walls, with the Caliph expecting his body to be dashed on the rocks of the river. When Pelagius emerged unharmed, he was then decapitated. The various accounts uphold his refusal of the Caliph's wishes.

Pelagius was a Christian martyr and canonized as "Saint Pelagius." His memorial is celebrated on June 26.

Feast day of Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Doctor of the Church died 444
Christian theologian and bishop active in the complex doctrinal struggles of the 5th century. He is chiefly known for his campaign against Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, whose views on Christ's nature were declared heretical. Cyril was named a doctor of the Church in 1882.

Irenaeus was a Greek bishop noted for his role in guiding and expanding Christian communities in what is now the south of France and, more widely, for the development of Christian theology by combating heresy and defining orthodoxy. Originating from Smyrna, now Izmir in Turkey, he had seen and heard the preaching of Polycarp, the last known living connection with the Apostles, who in turn was said to have heard John the Evangelist. Chosen as bishop of Lugdunum, now Lyon, his best-known work is Against Heresies, often cited as Adversus Haereses, an attack on gnosticism, in particular that of Valentinus. To counter the doctrines of the gnostic sects claiming secret wisdom, he offered three pillars of orthodoxy: the scriptures, the tradition handed down from the apostles, and the teaching of the apostles' successors.
His theological writings made a major contribution to the theological tradition and are still used to this day. Not only did he make a contribution to theology at large, but his writings tell us a lot about Mary in the early days of the Church and still influence our thoughts about her today. Saint Irenaeus is considered the father of mariology (the study of Mary). He was one of the first writers to describe Mary as the new Eve. Considering that Irenaeus was a student of Saint Polycarp who knew Saint John the Evangelist personally, it is thought that the early Catholic Church proclaimed Mary as the New Eve, the first meditation about her and her mission in the Church which has been given to us. Additionally, Saint Irenaeus described Mary as a vanquisher of heresy in his writings because during his life gnostics rejected the Old Testament. In the Mary as the New Eve, Irenaeus demonstrates the continuity of the Old Testament with the New Testament, thereby refuting the Gnostic heresy.
Saint Irenaeus writes in Adversus Haereses the following: “And thus also it was that the knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. For what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the virgin Mary set free through faith.” Mary’s obedience and faith undoes the knots of Eve’s disobedience and unbelief.
Saint Irenaeus is considered a martyr, but the specifics of his death are not known with certainty.

In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the Church to harm them.
He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,
and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews
he proceeded to arrest Peter also.
–It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.–
He had him taken into custody and put in prison
under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
Peter thus was being kept in prison,
but prayer by the Church was fervently being made
to God on his behalf.

On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial,
Peter, secured by double chains,
was sleeping between two soldiers,
while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him
and a light shone in the cell.
He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying,
“Get up quickly.”
The chains fell from his wrists.
The angel said to him, “Put on your belt and your sandals.”
He did so.
Then he said to him, “Put on your cloak and follow me.”
So he followed him out,
not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real;
he thought he was seeing a vision.
They passed the first guard, then the second,
and came to the iron gate leading out to the city,
which opened for them by itself.

St. Peter suffered martyrdom under Nero, in A.D. 66 or 67. He was buried on the hill of the Vatican where recent excavations have revealed his tomb on the very site of the Basilica of St. Peter's. St. Paul was beheaded in the Via Ostia on the spot where now stands the basilica bearing his name. Down the centuries Christian people in their thousands have gone on pilgrimage to the tombs of these Apostles. In the second and third centuries the Roman Church already stood pre-eminent by reason of her apostolicity, the infallible truth of her teaching and her two great figures, Sts. Peter and Paul.


A partial indulgence may be gained today by anyone who makes devout use of a religious article blessed by any priest but "if the article of devotion has been blessed by the Sovereign Pontiff or by any Bishop, the faithful, using it, can also gain a plenary indulgence, provided they also make a profession of faith (e.g. the Apostles Creed), as long as the usual conditions are satisfied.

Feast day of the First Holy Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church died 64

This feast has been assigned on the Calendar on the day following that of Saints Peter and Paul in honor of the first martyrs of the Church of Rome who were put to death in the ‘circus’ at the time of the persecution under Nero.
In July of 64 A.D. a conflagration erupted in Rome which ravaged the city for six days and seven nights. In the end, more than half of Rome was destroyed. Rumor blamed the tragedy on Nero, who wanted to enlarge his palace. He shifted the blame by accusing the Christians. The Christians at that time were mostly slaves, the disenfranchised and foreigners. The cruelty and injustice of the ensuing persecution was difficult to imagine. Victims were torn to pieces by wild beasts or burned like living torches. Threatened by an army revolt and condemned to death by the senate, Nero committed suicide in 68 A.D. at the age of 31.

where they drowned.

and when they came to the town they reported everything,
including what had happened to the demoniacs.
Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus,

Saint Junipero Serra, Apostle of California, died August 28, 1784

Saint Junipero Serra is the first saint to be canonized on the soil of the United States. Junipero was born in Majorca, a part of Spain in 1713. Junipero joined the Franciscan order when he was sixteen years old. After his ordination to the priesthood, Junipero taught philosophy and theology. He was recognized as a brilliant scholar. However, he felt a strong call to become a missionary and left Spain to evangelize people in the New World. On his journey, Junipero was bit by an insect in the leg which then became infected. He never recovered fully from the wound and it created a lifelong problem for him. Nonetheless, Junipero chose to walk on his numerous missionary journeys instead of riding a horse, just as Saint Francis had encouraged the friars to do. Junipero spent eighteen years in Mexico. He became president of the missions in Baja California. Junipero journeyed north and founded nine missions in present day California, the first in San Diego California called Mission San Diego de Alcala. With the primary mission of saving souls, Junipero baptized and confirmed thousands of people. In addition, the indigenous people were taught European methods of farming and animal husbandry. After traveling up the California coast founding missions here and there, Junipero died at the age of 70 at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo, in modern day Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. He is buried under the floor of the sanctuary.
Even though Junipero could have lived a comfortable life as a scholar and university professor in Spain, he chose to follow his missionary call, full of physical problems and many other struggles. He said, “All my life I have wanted to be a missionary. I have wanted to carry the Gospel message to those who have never heard of God and the kingdom He has prepared for them.” Junipero Serra was canonized September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. by Pope Francis.

On my holy medal of Saint Junipero that I wear around my neck, it has one of his quotes that was "Always go forward, never turn back." Please pray, Saint Junipero, for us and especially for the conversion, sanctification and salvation of all Californians. Amen.

July is the month of the Precious Blood of Jesus. There is a Litany of the Precious Blood of Jesus that is so meaningful to pray. GospelMt 9:1-8
After entering a boat, Jesus made the crossing, and came into his own town.
And there people brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
“Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.”
At that, some of the scribes said to themselves,
“This man is blaspheming.”
Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
“Why do you harbor evil thoughts?
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins”–
he then said to the paralytic,
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
When the crowds saw this they were struck with awe
and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

Since the Feast of the Visitation fell on the Feast day of Pentecost this year (May 31, 2020)...remembering the Visitation on the traditional date of the feast....July 2 which was the feast day prior to 1969.

42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

According to traditional accounts of the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala in India, Thomas is believed to have traveled to the Malabar Coast to preach the Gospel. t According to their tradition, Thomas reached modern-day North Paravur and Kodungalloor in the state of Kerala, India in the year 52. In 1258, some of the relics were brought to Italy, where they have been held in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. He is often regarded as the patron saint of India and the name Thomas remains quite popular among Christians of India.

for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
People do not put new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined.
Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Feast day of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal (1271 – July 4, 1336)

Saint Elizabeth of Portugal’s Story
Elizabeth is usually depicted in royal garb with a dove or an olive branch. At her birth in 1271, her father Pedro III, future king of Aragon, was reconciled with his father James, the reigning monarch. This proved to be a portent of things to come. Under the healthful influences surrounding her early years, she quickly learned self-discipline and acquired a taste for spirituality.

Thus fortunately prepared, Elizabeth was able to meet the challenge when at the age of 12, she was given in marriage to Denis, king of Portugal. She was able to establish for herself a pattern of life conducive to growth in God’s love, not merely through her exercises of piety, including daily Mass, but also through her exercise of charity, by which she was able to befriend and help pilgrims, strangers, the sick, the poor—in a word, all those whose need came to her notice. At the same time she remained devoted to her husband, whose infidelity to her was a scandal to the kingdom.

Denis, too, was the object of many of her peace endeavors. Elizabeth long sought peace for him with God, and was finally rewarded when he gave up his life of sin. She repeatedly sought and effected peace between the king and their rebellious son Alfonso, who thought that he was passed over to favor the king’s illegitimate children. She acted as peacemaker in the struggle between Ferdinand, king of Aragon, and his cousin James, who claimed the crown. And finally from Coimbra, where she had retired as a Franciscan tertiary to the monastery of the Poor Clares after the death of her husband, Elizabeth set out and was able to bring about a lasting peace between her son Alfonso, now king of Portugal, and his son-in-law, the king of Castile.
