I suppose others here knew this before I did (having never visited Asia, but I read alot), but Asians do build huge religious statues, especially of Buddha. Occasionally a huge Kuan Yin too. So this doesn't surprise me. My husband has a half-sister born in the Philippines. Helen is very devout to our Church, even more so than husband's "full blood" family.
Maybe I´m reading too much into it but the fact that it is supposed to be finished by 2021 might be of significance...
