It's not just Brazil's Amazon rainforest that's ablaze – Bolivian fires are threatening people and wildlife

Up to 800,000 hectares of the unique Chiquitano forest were burned to the ground in Bolivia between August 18 and August 23. That's more forest than is usually destroyed across the country in two years. Experts say that it will take at least two centuries to repair the ecological damage done by the fires, while at least 500 species are said to be at risk from the flames.

The Chiquitano dry forest in Bolivia was the largest healthy tropical dry forest in the world. It's now unclear whether it will retain that status. The forest is home to Indigenous peoples as well as iconic wildlife such as jaguars, giant armadillos, and tapirs. Some species in the Chiquitano are found nowhere else on Earth. Distressing photographs and videos from the area show many animals have burned to death in the recent fires.

The burnt region also encompasses farmland and towns, with thousands of people evacuated and many more affected by the smoke. Food and water are being sent to the region, while children are being kept home from school in many districts where the air pollution is double what is considered extreme. Many families are still without drinking water. While the media has focused on Brazil, Bolivians are asking the world to notice their unfolding tragedy—and to send help in combating the flames.

It's thought that the fires were started deliberately to clear the land for farming, but quickly got out of control. The perpetrators aren't known, but Bolivian President Evo Morales has justified people starting fires, saying: "If small families don't set fires, what are they going to live on?"

The disaster comes just a month after Morales announced a new "supreme decree" aimed at increasing beef production for export. Twenty-one civil society organisations are calling for the repeal of this decree, arguing that it has helped cause the fires and violates Bolivia's environmental laws. Government officials say that fire setting is a normal activity at this time of year and isn't linked to the decree.

Morales has repeatedly said that international help isn't needed, despite having sent just three helicopters to tackle the raging fires. He argued that the fires are dying out in some areas—although they continue to burn in others and have now reached Bolivia's largest city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Many say that the fires could have been contained far sooner with international help, as videos show volunteers trying to beat back the fires with branches.

As the fires worsened, people gathered to protest in Santa Cruz state. Chanting "we want your help", they complained that the smoke was so bad they were struggling to breathe. They want Morales to request international aid to fight the fires. While firefighters and volunteers struggle to tackle the blaze in 55℃ heat, Bolivians have set up a fundraiser to tackle the fires themselves.

A fortnight after the fires began, a supertanker aeroplane of water arrived, hired from the US. But if the reactions to the president's announcement on Twitter are anything to go by, many Bolivians think this is too little, too late. Morales is fighting a general election and has faced criticism for staying on the campaign trail while the fires spread.

Some Indigenous leaders are asking for a trial to determine responsibility for the fires, and the response to them. Alex Villca, an Indigenous leader and spokesperson, said: "It is President Evo Morales who should be held accountable. What are these accountabilities going to be? A trial of responsibilities for this number of events that are occurring in the country, this number of violations of Indigenous peoples and also the rights of Mother Nature."

President Morales came to power in Bolivia in 2006, on a platform of socialism, Indigenous rights, and environmental protection. He passed the famous "Law of the Rights of Mother Earth" in 2010, which placed the intrinsic value of nature alongside that of humans. His environmental rhetoric has been strong but his policies have been contradictory. Morales has approved widespread deforestation, as well as roads and gas exploration in national parks.

The extreme heat has made fighting the fires intolerable for those involved. Credit: Ipa Ibañez, Author provided

While the fires in the Chiquitano have dominated the media within the country, hundreds more rage across Bolivia, assisted by the recent drought. It's unclear whether the response to these fires will affect the October election outcome, but sentiments are running high in the country, where more than 70% of people prioritise environmental protection over economic growth.

Bolsonaro and Brazil might grab the headlines, but Bolivia too is now host to a desperately serious humanitarian and environmental situation.

I am not familiar with the author of the following article or with the "prominent Christians" who are mentioned in the article but I think that this article is worth reading because I believe that the author is encouraging Christians to stand firm in their faith.
Sirach 17:24 And know the justices and judgments of God, and stand firm in the lot set before thee, and in prayer to the most high God.

John 14:6 Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.

Famous Christian departees have lost their sense of truth
    by Jenna Ellis Rives | August 21, 2019 | https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/famous-christian-departees-have-lost-their-sense-of-truth

The evangelical world has been rocked with the recent news of several prominent Christians who are suddenly and very publicly abandoning their faith. Marty Sampson, a Christian music artist, wrote that he believes Christianity is “just another religion.” Weeks earlier, Joshua Harris, known for his books on dating and sexual purity, posted on Instagram that he had undergone a “massive shift in regard to my faith” and declared he is no longer a Christian.

In the midst of these few who are publicly abandoning their faith, there remain countless people across the world and throughout history who have been through the crucible, who have been tested by the fires of the culture and the difficulties of life, and have come forth professing the truth of Christianity — not as a religion or set of rules to follow to live one’s best life, but as a comprehensive explanation for the reality that we as human beings share in common and experience.

True Christianity is a worldview. It’s the manual to unlock the answers to life’s greatest questions. We all ask, Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? There are many responses to these questions that could be true. But the Christian explanation, through the Bible, reveals the best answer to those questions. I often tell my students I’m not a Christian just because I believe in the Bible. I am a Christian because the Bible is the best explanation for the reality to which we are presented. We all have to confront the truth of reality.

Christianity is the only explanation that does not require humans to achiever greater enlightenment by virtue of themselves. It is our creator who revealed himself to us and provided the answers to these great mysteries so that we do not have to wonder or conjure our own explanations for who we are and why we are here and what is our purpose and desperately hope we might get it right.

1 Peter 3:15 says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

This implies that we have a reasoned and reasonable faith. Not a blind faith or mere religion. I could very sincerely believe all manner of things that are not true. The culture asks us to believe sincerely that a biological man can be a woman. However earnestly one believes that, empirical reality tells us that is not true. I could with all sincerity follow a list of rules and rituals and call it a religion, and that would no more explain the reason for human existence than not doing any of those things.

True Christianity is neither blind faith nor a religion. It’s not memorizing trite comfort phrases like fortune cookies. It’s not attending life coaching classes on Sundays to achieve a better life or find one’s “best self.” True Christianity is the answer to our questions. Having real answers is having confidence in our hope and assurance that we have the truth. Don’t we want the true answers to those questions? One might say, “Why should I care about truth?” Well, do you want the real answer or the false one?

It’s interesting that after renouncing their “faith,” each of these public declarations ends with a distinctly Christian ethic. Sampson wrote, “Love and forgive absolutely. Be kind absolutely. Be generous and do good to others absolutely. Some things are good no matter what you believe.” Harris said he feels “hopeful.” How can we know what it means to love, forgive, “do good,” and what do we have hope in, without a truthful standard and measurable definition?

Without even realizing it, these men are still borrowing from the Christian worldview. To understand what it means to love and forgive, “do good,” and be kind, one must first have a definition for what is right versus wrong and a reasonable explanation for where this moral ethic originates.

When people publicly disclaim a shallow view of Christianity, they did not substitute it for a better explanation. In fact, they all say the opposite — that they don’t know where they’re going or precisely what they’re doing, they just “feel.” Instead of buying into the cultural lie that we are alone in this world to helplessly try and find our “best self” or “my authentic self,” wouldn’t you rather know with certainty who you were intentionally and with design made to be?

True Christianity offers more than false hope and subjective feelings: It provides the true answers to life’s most important questions. The truth is that all human beings are made in the image of God. We have intrinsic value. We have purpose in him and are designed uniquely by him. Because when we are designed for a relationship with our creator, that is truly the only thing that can bring lasting joy, peace, happiness, and hope.

John Piper wrote, “The gospel is the news that Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over all his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy.”

C.S. Lewis also wrote, "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

This is true Christianity. There are millions who testify to this truth and have died horrible deaths for it in persecution, who have endured countless hardships without recanting, and who stand firm in truth today. These Christians are not holding fast to a mere religion or feel-good life coaching to be their best selves. True Christianity is life-changing, real, rational, and reasoned.

So for these few who have left their “faith,” consider: Was it true Christianity to begin with or just religion?

It seems suspicious when prominent, self-declared 'Christians' glibly abandon what they had proclaimed was the very definition of their being-what other way can Christianity be? Perhaps they only claimed to be for the sake of fame or fortune, or are they now being blackmailed in some way?

  10. That alleged vision given to George Washington about the future of the nation by the beautiful woman:

    .....
    Washington Stated:
“This afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of her presence. A second, a third and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes.

“By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless, as though it had become paralyzed.

“A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed as if it had become filled with sensations, and luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; all were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

The Third Peril – America's Judgment?

“And again I heard the mysterious voice saying `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: From each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America. Our country was enveloped in this volume of cloud, and I saw these vast armies devastate the whole county and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of sword, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' When the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast.

“Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shone the word Union, and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were will nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle.

“Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious!

“Then once more I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice: `While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last.' And taking from his brow the crown on which blazoned the word `Union,' he placed it upon the Standard while the people, kneeling down, said, `Amen.'

“The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld. This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, `Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, but in this greatest conflict the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land and the Union'. With these words the vision vanished, and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown to me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States.

The Minister of the House, Onyx Lorenzoni , told the blog that the government will reject the aid of the G7 to combat the burning in the Amazon , announced on Monday (26) by French President Emmanuel Macron . The office of the Planalto Palace confirmed the information given by Onyx.

The announcement was made in France after Macron attended a G7 meeting. According to him, the group decided to allocate 20 million euros to combat the burnings.

French President and President Jair Bolsonaro have been publicly criticizing each other since last week.

"Thanks, but perhaps these resources are more relevant to reforesting Europe. Can Macron not even prevent a predictable fire in a church that is a World Heritage Site and wants to teach what for our country? He has a lot to look after at home. and in the French colonies, "Onyx told the blog.

"Brazil is a democratic, free nation and has never had colonialist and imperialist practices as perhaps the goal of French Macron. Incidentally, coincidentally with high domestic rejection rates," added the minister of the Civil House.

On the blog, Onyx Lorenzoni also said that Brazil can teach "any nation" how to protect native forests. "By the way, there is no country that has a greater native coverage than ours," he added.

Earlier on Monday, Environment Minister Ricardo Salles even said that the aid announced by the G7 was "welcome".

Also on Monday, Bolsonaro did not say whether or not to accept the support , but questioned the announcement made by Macron. "Does anyone help anyone - except a poor person, right? - no return? [...] What have they wanted there so long?"

On the 15th, when Norway decided to suspend the transfer of funds to the Amazon Fund, President Bolsonaro suggested that the country transfer the money to Germany .

  16. 'Conservative answer' to Facebook launches
www.USA.Life restores freedom and privacy to the Internet

Describing itself as the "answer to Facebook and Twitter censoring Christians, conservatives and liberty," a new social-media platform called USA.Life launched. Many users are signing up.

Founder and CEO Steven Andrew said he decided to use his Silicon Valley tech leadership experience to launch USA.Life after he saw Facebook block millions of people from getting his posts.

Andrew believes Facebook lied to Congress about being "a platform for all ideas," since they restrict supporters of President Trump, Christians and conservatives.

"Facebook blocks 99 percent of my reach, which means 5 million people are missing per month from my account alone," he said.

Andrew has led multi-million dollar initiatives for Cisco, Better Homes and Gardens, Sega and Stanford.

USA.Life is necessary, he said, because "censorship affects elections, people’s lives and relationships."

Users can share photos, updates, news, videos and messages, and join groups.

"People can connect with those most important to them, too," he said.

Andrew set up a crowdfunding page to launch the project, saying USA.Life is for all who love America.

"We don’t have the billions of dollars that Facebook, Google and Twitter have, so we need people who want freedom and privacy to contribute what they can," he said.

Financial supporters receive a special reward, depending on how much they give, such as their name credited in the computer code with a keepsake PDF to print and other perks. For larger donations, individuals and organizations can get their name on the founders wall.

Andrew is also building a search engine, 1776Free.com.

Calling it "America’s new search engine," he believes it will provide better results than Google.

Users will get "President Trump, conservative and Christian real news that Google hides," he said.

"Without USA.Life, freedom and privacy could be lost forever, that is why we need people's support," he said.

"USA.Life is needed to protect the free speech assured by the First Amendment. We will unite the nation," according to Andrew.

I know I've posted something similar to this in the past, I feel inclined to bring it up again. Are people with a true gift of healing very prevalent in other countries? While I hear of that talked about more in Protestant circles, there is the question of legitimacy. Seems to be more for show, they're told to fall over when touched.

I've been to Healing Masses, received the Sacrament myself, prior to my hip surgery. Does it seem actual physical healing were much more common in the Catholic Church until Padre Pio passed into eternity? If so, I have wondered if this reflects a punishment due to the change in the Mass. Could that directly pertain to those who don't attend TLM receiving less graces such a being gifted with healing. When the question of healing is discussed, there is far more focus on spiritual healing being the operative gift. That is also coming from charismatic priests. It is also a question of faith that people will be physically healed?

    That has really struck me.

Also, I need prayers for finding new employment and the right career move. I was removed from my "den of lions" Friday, offered the option to resign if I prefer than "termination". No wonder my boss blew me off in disgust when I told him I might need a couple days off later this week when I move back home after forced kitchen remodeling. That also now means I no longer have health insurance. Soo, I need to apply for Medicaid again. :(

With this being 4 in 4 months, what in the world is coming around the corner?! Granted I was told I'll be moving back by the 1st. I started camping at the family house about the day my Mom had her final mini stroke (died and met Jesus face to face a week later).

Sorry to hear about the unplanned job changes Joan I will keep you in my prayers. I hope that God has something more appropriate in store for you.

I have thought about this subject as far as healers and the gifts of the Holy Spirit off and on and I don't think that it is a matter of less of them but one of less faith in mans hearts for it. We run off to the doctor at the first sign of trouble these days. We rely on the expertise of doctors and science over that of providence to a great extent. Mankind has all the solutions these days! How can God heal us if we do not allow Him to?
Sometimes I optimistically think that there is a bit of a tide turning and what I mean by that is a growing segment of people who are shunning traditional doctors and medications for faith and natural alternatives. It seems though that many of these are pagans.
I notice in my ongoing myriad of doctors visits that almost none of all the doctors in my current rotation have ever responded positively when they ask me if I meditate and I reply "Yes, I pray and meditate regularly" with anything but crumpled up noses and then a recommendation to practice yoga!
I also think that this is why traditional medicine has no solutions and especially no cures in spite of it's ever increasing reliance on better and more advanced technologies rather than good Doctors who believe in God and practice their faith along with their practice.
I suspect that at some point in the not too distant future that those cures will be revealed and that they will come with a big price. The tissues or blood (DNA) of babies will be commonly used in them and this will be accepted by most of society due to their miraculous results.
Those willing will find their cures alright but they will be in direct contradiction to what God has decreed for us.
As in the days of Noe...

    Joan,

Firstly, I'll keep your employment concerns in my prayers. Secondly, I want to address your inquiry about healing. I believe that God always puts a higher value on changing a person's heart over healing one's body. Yes, there were numerous physical healings which Jesus performed in his ministry. But think of how frequently He drove out demons and called individuals to have a change of heart. I've been to a number of healing services over the years, and virtually every person who has prayed over me has initially reached out and grasped my right hand and arm affected by cerebral palsy, assuming I've come up for a physical healing. God has never responded to such requests even though I have received numerous healings of the heart and of memories. Now, I have witnessed physical healings, and rejoice in the encouragement and faith they enkindled, but our mortal bodies are destined for decay. God wants us to be a witness of Jesus' love to draw souls to Himself, and that requires our hearts to be touched and filled with joy. O, to love the Lord when He has enabled us to be an instrument of His peace! Alleluia!:ROFLMAO:

Yes, Padre Pio was a powerful healer through the grace of God. But think of the thousands whose hearts were transformed in the confessional because of the words of knowledge shared with them by that marvelous Capuchin friar!

Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
