    Hi Padraig. I read the forum every day and a few years ago I reminded you to make a post about the Portincula indulgence. It is coming up again on August 2. Also, it is a Saturday, which is the only time, at least in the US, that priests are “ready and waiting” in the confessional for an hour before the 5pm Saturday mass. Hopefully people on the forum will take advantage of that. Thanks! Dawn

    CONDITIONS TO OBTAIN
    THE PLENARY INDULGENCE
    OF THE FORGIVENESS OF ASSISI
    (for oneself or for a departed soul)
    • Sacramental Confession to be in God's grace
      (during the eight days before or after);
      • Participation in the Holy Mass and Eucharist.
        • Visit to a Catholic Church, followed by PROFESSION OF FAITH, in order to reaffirm one's own Christian identity;
          • Say the OUR FATHER, in order to reaffirm the dignity as child of God that one received in Baptism;
            • A prayer for the Pope's intention, in order to reaffirm one's membership in the Church, of which the Roman Pontiff is the foundation and sign of visible unity.
          • THE INDULGENCEItalian Bishops' Conference, Adult Catechism, n. 710

            Sin not only destroys communion with God, but also compromises the interior state of persons and their relationship with other creatures. For a total repentance, it is not enough to be sorry and to receive the remission of faults. It is also necessary that reparation be made for the disorder provoked by sin, a disorder that usually continues after the sin. In this process of purification the penitent is not alone. The penitent participates in a mystery of solidarity, for which Christ and the Saints rejoice with one. God communicates to one the grace merited by others with the immense value of their existence, in order to effect one's reparation rapidly and effectively.

            The Church has always exhorted the faithful to offer prayers, good works and sufferings for the conversion of sinners and for the repose of the faithful departed. During the first centuries, bishops reduced the duration and the severeness of public punishment, through the intercession of the witnesses of faith who survived tortures.

            Progressively the consciousness grew that the power to bind and unbind, received from the Lord, included the faculty to free penitents from the residue left by already forgiven sins, by applying to them the merits of Christ and the Saints, in order to obtain the grace of a fervent charity. Priests grant this privilege to those who have the right interior disposition and have adhered to the prescribed norms. Participation in this penitential rite is a prerequisite to the concession of an indulgence.

    I was not familiar with this indulgence and did a quick search on it. This article seems to say you must go to a Franciscan parish.

    http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/portiuncula_indulgence_can_be_obtained_this_sunday/

    Assisi, Italy, Aug 4, 2006 / 12:00 am (CNA).- This Sunday Catholics can obtain the Portiuncula Indulgence by visiting any Franciscan parish or chapel around the world.

    In the summer of 1216 while praying in the Portiuncula chapel outside of Assisi, St. Francis was inspired to travel to Rome and ask the Pope for an unheard-of privilege: the granting of a plenary indulgence.

    Pope Honorius III granted the indulgence as a sign of the greatness of God’s love for humanity. August 2nd was established as the date to receive the “Great Pardon of Assisi.” Eventually, the Church modified the conditions and said the faithful could obtain the indulgence either on August 2nd or on the following Sunday by visiting any Franciscan parish or chapel throughout the world. The conditions for gaining the indulgence include praying the Our Father and the Creed, as well as receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.

    I thought the same thing at first, but this article indicates that the indulgence has been extended to all parish churches throughout the world. I hope so because I won't be able to make it to a Franciscan parish.

    2013-08-01 Vatican Radio...says its now any Parish

    “The Pardon of Assisi is one of the most extraordinary signs of the extraordinary connection of the Franciscans to the Pope of Rome,” said Father David-Maria Jaeger, OFM.
    “The Franciscan Order was the first religious order ever that made obedience to the Pope with the view to mission an important foundation of its rule and its spirituality,” he told Vatican Radio. “It was the Franciscan example that St. Ignatius of Loyola, and his Society of Jesus, followed in instituting their expression of this extraordinary link to the papacy. There is therefore a genetic link between the Franciscan Order and the Jesuits, which the Holy Father now symbolizes as being a Jesuit who took precisely the name of the Saint of Assisi, Pope Francis.”
    He said this means all Franciscan are excited about the visit of Pope Francis to Assisi on the Feast Day of St. Francis, which takes place on October 4th.
    Originally limited to those who visited the Portiuncula on August 2nd, the indulgence was later given to those who visit any Franciscan Church. Now, the plenary indulgence can now be obtained by a visit to any parish church on the feast.

  12. Rorate Caeli has a detailed explanation of the history of indulgence: http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2013/08/today-portiuncula-indulgence.html

    And, for the curious like myself, the Pope's intentions for August are:
    • Universal: That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy.
    • Evangelization: That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbours to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society

    So, just to clarify - it must be a parish church in order to be valid?
    Any Church wont do? It has to be the main Church in the parish?

    The Mother/main Church of a Diocese is the Cathedral. You wont need to go there for the Blessing. any Church you attend will have the same benefit. Your local Church you worship at will fufill the benefits as I understand it. Parish Churches are connected to the local Bishop in communion with the Pope.

    I hope that helped

    Im glad you posted. To be honest ,I assumed it was any Church . Like the brown scapular. Our Lady gave it to the Carmelite community. Later they extended enrollment to the non Carmelite laity by a Carmelite Priest .( I forget which Pope its the pamphlet that comes with the scapular that details the Popes request to the Carmelite Superior General to extend the Blessing to ALL Priests to impart on the faithful.Some on this forum say you don't have to be enrolled in the browm scapular and that's not true. You must be enrolled one time,afterward any Priest can Bless your scapular with the same benefits without an enrollment ceremony again) So I Thank you for raising the question, I learned something new about St Francis and St Ignatious and are papa Francis today! without your post I don't think I would have gotten the connection ever... :):):)

    If I'm reading it right, confession can take place 8 days before or after. So if you missed cinfession yesterday, you have all this coming week, including Friday(First Friday) and next Saturday.

    This is one week from today, August 2, see post #4 for full conditions.

    The Pope's intentions for August:

    Universal: Sports

    That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world.

    Evangelization: Living the Gospel

    That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor.
