The only answer that I have to this and similar questions (why did Jesus choose Judas? why did God create Satan?...) is to say that God's foreknowledge needs to be held in tension with creaturely freedom: exactly how to reconcile those two is a conundrum on which many theologians have broken their teeth down the centuries! My sense is that this question isn't really resolvable from our limited perspective because our status as beings limited by time does not allow us to comprehend how time looks from the perspective of eternity. There are huge speculative arguments among theologians as to what the Divine foreknowledge really means: does God know the future absolutely in the sense of knowing exactly what people will do, or does he know it perfectly in the mode of possibility, a little like a chess grand master looking at a board knows the whole range of possible moves (except that God's knowledge of possibilities is complete, whereas that of even the greatest chess player is only partial)? I'm personally inclined to the latter position for a number of reasons, the principal one being that the descriptions of God's dealings both with his people and individuals in the Bible really do imply that we are free moral agents who are responsible for our choices and that - contrary to what John Calvin may have thought - it is not the case that everything is determined in advance. Jonah and the postponement of the judgment of Nineveh is a classic example of this. In other words, regarding Miguel Angel Poblete, regardless of what he may or may not have seen, things surely didn't have to turn out the way in which they sadly did (although as I mentioned, the suggestion of deathbed repentance does give the story of his earthly life a hopeful final note), just as Bernadette Soubirous didn't have to end up being a saint. He was tempted and fell... but even so I don't want to judge: who knows what might have happened had the attitude of the local Church authorities been more supportive towards him? As for God's choices of instruments, He certainly doesn't follow our criteria! Wouldn't it be so much more convenient, so much safer if the Blessed Mother were constantly appearing to a saintly Pope and instructing him on a daily basis, rather than to some wild Chilean kid wandering with his drug-sniffing friends down by the town trash heap? Yes, but for some reason God doesn't seem to do things that way - as so many alleged dialogues between Jesus and the unlikeliest of mystics attest, it is wretchedness which attracts him, and therein lies a deep mystery.

Your usual thoughtful and deep post ,Peter. I suppose you are right, the Rpophets have to walk the line , the same as the rest of us . It makes me wonder in Scriptural times how many false starts God had with Prophets who let Him down or who even became False Prophets. It is borne home to me anew how much we have to be grarteful to teh Mother of God, Queen of Prophets for responding totally to God's call. There is ameasure of sadness in this too, that people given such a high calling might fail to respond.
Every soul that goes to hell has a high calling and an eternal destiny with God so I'm sure many visionaries fall.
This is very true, Padraig. But what is most sad in it, I believe, is that you and I have such a high calling and might not be responding either. Because there is no doubt that you and I are called to sainthood. What makes a saint? I wonder. Christ died for me as much as for any of them. And yet I am so far -so very far- from holiness in my calling. I wonder how the world would be if I were to be totally faithful, totally generous to God's Plan for me. Mystery upon mystery that only humility can pierce, I guess.
I have always loved what Jesus told Saint Faustina, 'The greatest sinners have the most claim on my mercy'. This aways cheers me up a very great deal as I get to go front of the queque. I was thinking the last few days about the Illumination of Conscience and the Great Outpouring of the Holy Spirit a couple of days after and thinking how utterly, utterly God is emptying Himself on our beahalf. Everything He could do He is doing. It is as though He is beside Himself. Just to change the focus on to the actual authenticity or otherwise of Miguel Angel Poblete's 'apparitions', I would like to copy a video of one of them. Peter and I differ on this but, for me, the video below excludes the possibility of the experience being authentic because of the frequent loss of focus by Poblete on his apparition to look around him. As far as I am aware, in all authentic apparitions, the seer never loses, for an instant, his focus on the apparition. The Garabandal visionaries are the best example of this, carrying out extraordinary activities over extended periods without for an instant taking their eyes from their apparition. I do accept that we need to avoid forcing 'God into a box' and accept He can do things differently if He wants but I think the kind of 'play acting' (as I see it) in this video is just not really believable.

David, I understand your point, but I'm really not convinced on historical grounds that this is as watertight as all this: in the latest scholarly work on Lourdes by Laetitia Ogorzelec-Guinchard, based in part on R. Laurentin's research, it is related that Bernadette was able to turn around, look at people etc. during her apparitions. So I wouldn't be dogmatic about this aspect of the phenomenology as a straightforward disqualifier, especially as I have never seen it quoted as a factor in an official evaluation. In the case of Penablanca, there is a lot of other evidence in terms of medical reports/atmospheric phenomena to be considered before arriving at any definitive conclusion IMHO.
The other possibility of course is that we may be dealing with a mixture of some genuine supernatural inspiration, sinful human behaviour and demonic interference. That would be a messy scenario.... but life is often messy, I'm afraid.
The current position of the Church on Penablanca seems to reflect this ambiguity: in 1996 after consultation with the then-Cardinal Ratzinger, Cardinal Medina allowed Mass to be celebrated on the site once a month (because he was favourably impressed with the pilgrims) but on condition that the apparitions were never mentioned... There is currently a shrine there with a replica of the Massabielle grotto.

It depends on how the visionaries are opened to the spiritual world. People who have a permanent door open to the middle plateau can have a gift to see Our Lady or his guardian angel without ecstasies etc It's more common the other way "ecstatic", but i know a true seer that has a gift like that and is a servant of Our Lady. But the most cases are diabolical because you can open your soul to the middle plateau by concentration, mantras and helped by demons.

Abortions are performed without any human feelings. They will be punished for this most grave sin. Man, each time less of a man, is guided by animal instincts, not human. Each human being is a magnet that, with his feelings, wishes, and objectives, expands over the sea of human destiny as at this instant when evil is greater than good. Man, with his capacity superior to everything around him, is capable of spreading his evil deeds to attract more evil onto himself. This is why evil over-abounds. THE GREAT TRIBULATION HAS ALREADY BEGUN; VERY GRAVE INSTANTS ARE APPROACHING FOR HUMANKIND, WHO DOES NOT WANT TO CHANGE, INSTEAD IS HEADING TOWARDS THE PRECIPICE. Behind some people who announce My Word although they are not priests, there are economic interests that keep them obsessed with being role models for those who are Mine and, behind them, the god money controls their lives. “Not everyone who says, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who lives, acts, and operates in My Will.” Mt 7,21 My People, MY HOUSE HAS BEEN INVADED BY SOME WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN MY TRUE PRESENCE IN THE EUCHARIST, THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN MY JUSTICE, AND THEY DON’T WANT PRAYER… I AM SO LACERATED IN MY OWN HOUSE! THEY DO NOT WANT MY MOTHER TO WARN MY PEOPLE EVEN THOUGH SHE IS THE MOTHER OF THE WORD! My Church is getting close to the Schism which will cause the greatest division never before seen by man.(1) I WANT UNITY IN MY PEOPLE, but they are on several slopes very far from My Doctrine. They have deformed My Doctrine to suit man. My Law is one and does not change. When within My Church they opened the door to freemasonry, the plan designed by evil had already stealthily infiltrated the heart of My Church thus smoothing the way for the usurper of the Mystical Body.
