It is essential to know and understand that you will never, ever, ever, ever cease to exist. Most people, it seems to me, don’t really process or understand this. Last week the topic of the heresy of soul annihilation came up in conversation in the context of the massive, massive damage that Francis is doing to souls. The person I was talking with argued that the notion of “ceasing to exist” is abhorrent to most people, and thus the words attributed to Francis in the most recent Scalfari interview probably didn’t do too much damage. I disagree vehemently. I think that the lie of “soul annihilation” is one of the main manifestations of satan’s tactic of “convincing the world that he doesn’t exist”. To have this idea attributed to the Pope is horrifying. -Ann Barnhardt

Pope Francis: The Devil Is No Myth — and We Must Fight Him (3307)
The Holy Father told the gathering for his Thursday Mass that no spiritual or Christian life is possible without the need to resist temptation.

VATICAN CITY — In his homily on Thursday, Pope Francis said that the devil is more than an idea, and in order to fight him, we must follow St. Paul’s instructions and put on the armor of God, which protects us.

In this generation, like so many others, people have been led to believe that the devil is a myth, a figure, an idea, the idea of evil. But the devil exists, and we must fight against him,” the Pope told those present in the Vatican’s St. Martha guesthouse for his daily Mass on Oct. 30.

He turned to St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, from which the day’s first reading was taken and in which the apostle warns against the temptations of the devil, telling Christians to clothe themselves with the armor of God so they can resist.

Pope Francis said that a Christian life requires both strength and courage and needs to be defended, because it is a constant battle with the devil, who tempts with worldly attractions, the passions and our flesh.

“From whom do I have to defend myself? What must I do?” he asked, saying that St. Paul tells us to “put on God’s full armor, meaning that God acts as a defense, helping us to resist Satan’s temptations. Is this clear?”

No spiritual or Christian life is possible without the need to resist temptation, he observed, explaining how our battle is not with small, trivial things, but, rather, with the principalities and ruling forces of this world, which are rooted in the devil and his followers.

We are getting into some heavy mystical (philosophy/spirituality) that has been defined and redefined throughout church history. Hell is one of those mysteries that has been discussed and debated by church fathers and mystics throughout the ages. It can be easy for someone who has no philosophical or theological training to twist words and facts. But our Holy Father is trying to give insights to very mystical and spiritual realities.

I will not say this is church docrtrine but it is one spiritual thought on hell and the soul.

The Holy Fathers statement is again...not against church doctrine and has some very mystical insights to hell. If a soul goes to hell, That soul is TOTALLY removed from God. Not because of Gods Will but because of mans will. Just like the "created one" left Our Lord and Savior, we also have the possibility of removing ourselves from God. If Papa Francis could use a stronger word, he would... but annialation of soul is pretty powerful. The souls ceasist to exist without God. Up until our death,we have at least a minuet chance of uniting with Our Father.

If God created souls so that they could be united to Him. What would happen to that soul if it didn't reach its natural end (Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ).

Yes, it would go to Hell (without God). And if a soul or angel is totally without God...because it did not follow its natural end. Then yes that soul or angel would be annialated in the eyes of God. In the end (death) you can either be with God or without God. If you are without God, you are in hell. The place that is godless for all eternity.

Being without God is annihilation of the souls natural order. Once you go to hell...there is no hope and no god.

    May Gods Will be Done

How does a word like "annihilate" turn into a heresy?

annihilate: destroy utterly; obliterate. synonyms: destroy, wipe out, obliterate, wipe off the face of the earth

It seems to be an inference to me to say that annihilate means to no longer exist. All it means is to be utterly destroyed. To have God no longer present in you to me means utterly destroyed. We have lost God forever. There is no greater destruction

Also, I would be curious as to the translation of the interview into english. Is annihilate the best word for the translation or was this word put into the article for a purpose. Either way I think it is very very dangerous for one to be passing judgment on anyone, let alone the Pope. I am not saying at all that we can't have a bad Pope and that we can't have an anti-pope to come but as Kathy mentioned, to talk and judge and gossip over it becomes quite dangerous for your soul in my opinion. I also don't ever believe that an "anti Pope" could be voted upon in a conclave guided by the Holy Spirit. The only way an anti Pope could come would be by usurping or falsely claiming the chair, not being elected.

    St. Francis prophecy:

At the time of this tribulation a man, not (authentically) canonically elected, will be raised to the Pontificate, who, by his cunning, will endeavor to draw many into error… There will be such diversity of opinions and schisms among the people… for in those days Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor, but a destroyer.

So how was Pope Francis not authentically canonically elected?

Pope: Media Spread Misinterpretations of Vatican II (2912)
These media misrepresentations ‘created many calamities, so many problems, so much misery,’ the Holy Father lamented in a Feb. 14 address.

    Second Vatican Council Fathers.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI said that many of the misinterpretations of the Second Vatican Council were caused by the media promoting its own version.

The world interpreted the Council through the eyes of the media, instead of seeing the true Council of the fathers and their key vision of faith,” said Pope Benedict at Paul VI Hall Feb. 14.

“Fifty years later, the strength of the real Council has been revealed, and it is our task for the Year of Faith to bring the real Second Vatican Council to life,” he told the priests gathered to meet him.

Pope Benedict spoke with the priests of the Diocese of Rome in an unscripted speech on the Second Vatican Council, which he first attended as a special advisor to Cardinal Frings of Cologne and later on as a theological expert.

“The immediate impression of the Council that got thorough to the people was that of the media, not that of the fathers,” he explained.

“The council of journalists did not, naturally, take place within the world of faith, but within the categories of the media of today, that is outside of the faith, with different hermeneutics … a hermeneutic of politics,” added Pope Benedict.

The Holy Father, who will give up office on Feb. 28, is one of the few remaining witnesses of the Council.

“The media saw the Council as a political struggle, a struggle for power between different currents within the Church,” he recalled.

“But it was obvious that the media would take the side of whatever faction best suited their world.”

Pope Opens Year of Faith, Calls for Return to Vatican II Documents (4891)

The Second Vatican Council 'did not formulate anything new in matters of faith, nor did it wish to replace what was ancient,' Benedict stated. Rather, it was concerned with seeing that 'the same faith might continue to be lived in the present day, that it might remain a living faith in a world of change.'

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI opened the Year of Faith in Rome with a call for a New Evangelization rooted in an authentic interpretation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council.

“I have often insisted on the need to return, as it were, to the ‘letter’ of the Council — that is, to its texts — also to draw from them its authentic spirit, and (it is) why I have repeated that the true legacy of Vatican II is to be found in them,” the Pope said Oct. 11 to approximately 30,000 pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the opening Mass of the Year of Faith.

Speaking on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, the Pope said that “reference to the documents saves us from extremes of anachronistic nostalgia and running too far ahead." Thus, "the new" can be welcomed "in a context of continuity.”

In scenes deliberately reminiscent of the opening of the Second Vatican Council on Oct. 11, 1962, the Mass began with a grand procession of more than 400 bishops from around the world. During the liturgy, the same book of the Gospels that was used throughout the three years of the Council was placed on the same golden throne that cradled it 50 years ago.

Benedict also chose to concelebrate Mass with 14 of the 70 surviving Council Fathers.

As a young priest and academic, Pope Benedict XVI was present at the Second Vatican Council in an advisory capacity to Cardinal Joseph Frings of Cologne, Germany. Today, in his homily, the Pope recalled how he felt during those years.

“During the Council, there was an emotional tension as we faced the common task of making the truth and beauty of the faith shine out in our time, without sacrificing it to the demands of the present or leaving it tied to the past,” he recalled.

The Holy Father lamented that when the Council closed in 1965 many Catholics misinterpreted its documents and “embraced uncritically the dominant mentality.” In doing so, they placed in doubt “the very foundations of the deposit of faith, which they sadly no longer felt able to accept as truths,” he said.

But the Second Vatican Council “did not formulate anything new in matters of faith, nor did it wish to replace what was ancient,” Benedict stated. Rather, it was concerned with seeing that “the same faith might continue to be lived in the present day, that it might remain a living faith in a world of change.”

For that reason, the Pope said he hopes the Year of Faith will “revive in the whole Church that positive tension” between “the eternal presence of God” that transcends time but “can only be welcomed by us in our own unrepeatable today.”

Despite predictions of an increasingly secularized world, Benedict said that he sees “innumerable signs, often expressed implicitly or negatively, of the thirst for God, for the ultimate meaning of life.” These signs include the upsurge in popularity of traditional pilgrimage routes such as the Way of St. James in northern Spain.

Towards the close of the Mass, Pope Benedict re-enacted his predecessor Pope Paul VI’s conclusion of the Second Vatican Council by issuing a series of “Messages to the People of God,” including rulers, scientists, artists, women, workers and the young.

American journalist Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review Online received the message to women, while Scottish composer James MacMillan was entrusted with the message to artists.

Benedict concluded the ceremony by entrusting the Year of Faith to Our Lady, praying that “the Virgin Mary always shine out as a star along the way of the New

I believe St. Francis is a great gift to the Church for this time. I could be wrong. Whether he is the Pope we need or the Pope we deserve has yet to be seen. But he is certainly the Pope chosen for us by the Holy Spirit.

There have been wicked Popes in the history of our Church. Those who left the Church over a wicked Pope didn't have to answer for the Pope's wickedness, but for their own apostasy.

Our job is to pray for our Pope and all priests, not to evaluate their performance or their intentions.

This is true, we should not pass judgement on their souls. When my mom wanted an annulment and had no real means to petition for one she went to her priest who helped her "come up with" a reason for one. She ended up lying to get one. This was a bad priest, plain and simple. Do I say he is going to hell? Nope, no idea. Has he repented? No clue. I cannot judge the state of his soul but I can judge that his actions were evil. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

Do not judge that which you clearly do not understand and be not judged. For who here has waked an inch in another souls shoes.

Many souls unfortunately point out problems with others, instead of finding a solution to bring out the best in that soul.

When you see weeds growing around a flower: do you pull the flower up? No! You pull the weeds out!

    • A consultor is one of 40 opinion givers. Jesus, who knows everything, made Judas Iscariot one of the Twelve Apostles. A way more important job than a consulter. And Jesus is God.
Rejecting the authority of the Vicar of Christ is worse than asking a progressive voice to sit in with the panel of consulters. Look at it this way: Holy Father Francis may be trying to save this Dominican's soul. Don't get cozy. None of us is out of the woods yet. Pope Francis is definitely trying to save your soul. Mine, too
