I would love to hear your opinions on Jeb Bush. He seems like a good candidate to me. He converted to Catholicism after marrying a Mexican woman and seems like he really is Catholic. I have no idea as I am in Ireland. But --- Politicians. The reason why I am a political atheist. Soon politics will no longer matter as the problems are becoming too big to fix. This is God's way of letting us know we have strayed from Him!
Even if politics don't matter I assume people still need to help select the better of two evils. I am mainly interested here as Jeb claims to be a Catholic but is still a Bush who are most certainly part of the establishment. Makes discernment difficult. Even though being Irish I don't have a vote, this still effects us all so i'm interested.

I think 99% off politicians are corrupt to varying degrees, so I used to follow politics, but now just keep up on the basics. I look Jeb as one of the elites, so would not trust him at all. I guess the only candidate I somewhat like is Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic. I would trust him a lot more. Although I think it is a mute point, as I don't think there will be another election in the US. I have felt for long time that events will really take hold of the world, and something like a presidential election just will not happen.

Jeb Bush was a key advocate for implementation of the common core curriculum, a process by which the Federal Government assumes top-down control of our children's education. Vote for Jeb? No way! I'm leaning toward Dr. Ben Carson and his program of "common sense". He is not beholden to money or any political party. Safe in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary!
I have not really followed the 2016 potential candidates much, but I believe Bobby Jindal the Governor of Louisiana is a strong Catholic who has a 100% prolife rating, opposes same-sex marriage, and pulled his state out of the Common core standards. I believe he is also strong on civil rights and advocacy for the poor. I don't know if he is running, but I do think he is a good candidate from my perspective.

when discerning candidates, if there is an election, I will think more about how I think the person will respond to the warning, and less about where they stand on social issues. Those are important, but really to me it's about how they will respond to the warning, as I think it is in our near future.

But I disagree with the view of some that 99% of politicians are corrupt etc. It's 99% of media hyped or prominent candidates in all parties (in Ireland or the US I think) whereas many of the less favoured politicians can be perfectly honest. In our constituency in Ireland honest people go up for election all the time as independents and end up with a tiny proportion of the vote as people assume all politicians are corrupt!
The ones I think have integrity are Ben Carson, Huckabee, Rand Paul, and Jindal. I can't see America voting for another Bush, even though Jeb is probably better than the other two. I'm not even sure America will exist as we know it by 2016. Besides someone who is right on the social issues, and the financial issues, which are reaching critical mass, we need a candidate who will respect the Constitution and give most of the rights back to the states as originally intended, but that ship has probably already sailed.
I agree with most if what others have written in terms of specific candidates. I think to a large extent the system itself is "corrupted" - not just in the typical sense of corruption (paying for favors) but more like a computer system that has a virus and causes entire system to crash. It's really hard, if not impossible, to remove the virus- sometimes you need a new computer. I think the CCC spells out very clearly the role of public authority and our response as citizens. If we could only get to this point: V. THE AUTHORITIES IN CIVIL SOCIETY 2234 God's fourth commandment also enjoins us to honor all who for our good have received authority in society from God. It clarifies the duties of those who exercise authority as well as those who benefit from it. Duties of civil authorities 2235 Those who exercise authority should do so as a service. "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant."41 The exercise of authority is measured morally in terms of its divine origin, its reasonable nature and its specific object. No one can command or establish what is contrary to the dignity of persons and the natural law. 2236 The exercise of authority is meant to give outward expression to a just hierarchy of values in order to facilitate the exercise of freedom and responsibility by all. Those in authority should practice distributive justice wisely, taking account of the needs and contribution of each, with a view to harmony and peace. The political community and the Church 2244 Every institution is inspired, at least implicitly, by a vision of man and his destiny, from which it derives the point of reference for its judgment, its hierarchy of values, its line of conduct. Most societies have formed their institutions in the recognition of a certain preeminence of man over things. Only the divinely revealed religion has clearly recognized man's origin and destiny in God, the Creator and Redeemer. The Church invites political authorities to measure their judgments and decisions against this inspired truth about God and man: Societies not recognizing this vision or rejecting it in the name of their independence from God are brought to seek their criteria and goal in themselves or to borrow them from some ideology. Since they do not admit that one can defend an objective criterion of good and evil, they arrogate to themselves an explicit or implicit totalitarian power over man and his destiny, as history shows.51 2245 The Church, because of her commission and competence, is not to be confused in any way with the political community. She is both the sign and the safeguard of the transcendent character of the human person. "The Church respects and encourages the political freedom and responsibility of the citizen."52 2246 It is a part of the Church's mission "to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls requires it. The means, the only means, she may use are those which are in accord with the Gospel and the welfare of all men according to the diversity of times and circumstances."53
