Pope Francis has removed the US Cardinal Raymond Burke as Cardinal Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and appointed him Cardinal Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Thus, the cardinal is removed from Church leadership, to which he belonged as head of the Supreme Court. Vindictive Retaliation by Pope Only a few weeks after the completion of the Synod of Bishops the "sending away" of the cardinal appears as revenge and retaliation by Pope Francis. So the reigning pope seems to have acted in quite a hurry. On November 3, just 15 days after the end of the Synod, he approved a Rescriptum of the Cardinal Secretary of State, with the retirement provisions for bishops and cardinals eligible for papal nomination were tightened. It entered into force on 5 November, and the Rescriptum required all Cardinals over 75 (except Cardinal Prefects of the Roman Curia) to immediately offer their resignations. This also affected the previous patron of the Order of Malta, Cardinal Paolo Sardi. The resignation offered by Cardinal Sardi was immediately accepted by the Pope, thus clearing a space, to which Cardinal Burke could be deported in an "elegant" way to a management function in the Roman Curia with an honorary function. Praise of Benedict XVI Did Not Help The demonstrative praise of Benedict XVI. from his self-imposed exile in a greeting message to the International Pilgrimage of Tradition where the celebrant in St. Peter's Basilica in the Old Rite was Cardinal Burke on October 26, describing "great cardinals," did not help. The dismissal of one of the most prominent and recent cardinals of the Catholic Church is an affront for a significant part of the universal Church, which is intended by the papal retaliation that Cardinal Burke will be punished. The measure has confirmed some Argentine voices, which described Jorge Mario Bergoglio since his election as the head of the Church, as very resentful and would not to tolerate criticism of his person and opposition to his plans. They also confirmed that Pope Francis is the actual director behind the "new Mercy", which was represented by Cardinal Kasper as a spokesman. By deposing Burke from his post as head of a dicastry, he can no longer participate ex officio at the Synod of Bishops on the family in the coming year. Pope Francis has silenced the Cardinal with his "reshuffle" in the Synod. It's a signal that the Argentine Church leader seems willing to make up for in 2015, that which has not been achieved at the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 2014 and to push through his "new mercy". Padraig: First, I fully understand the balance between the "Truth" and "Mercy" leaning positions espoused by the various factions of cardinals, and written about, at too much length, by Charlie and Mark Mallett (and many others) at this point. ...And I certainly don't lean liberal, and am not in favor of changes in doctrine. However, when your perspective is whether or not this synod's effort "makes the church stronger", or whether it affects a larger enough number of "churchgoers" or "churchgoing people", and then you conclude that it doesn't.....it seems that your perspective is skewed, or Padraig-centric. I think that Christ established His Church to save souls, and not to view itself as an organization with an isolationist mentality. Additionally, statistics of divorce among Catholics alone should be proof enough that there is a HUGE number of souls that the Church must be concerned with here. You may not see them as "churchgoers", because many are likely not, anymore. But the purpose of His Church remains...... And time is short..... therefore I propose that this is the "why?" in your question.
The Church will not become "stronger" until it is broken down and purified. I think Pope Francis was chosen by the Holy Spirit to begin such. Once she has become broken and persecuted, she will, as Cardianal Ratzinger said, "become very small and very holy".
I don't disagree. I was citing the phrase "make the church stronger" from another post, and was not seeking that end result via my post. If your post is in response to mine to point out error, then it is misdirected.
Al I would be surprised if your point2 were as simple as you put it. This is because your summary seems to ignore the relationship between Church law/discipline and Christian moral principles from which it imperfectly flows. If I have abandoned my wife and and children I think my PP would be very concerned if I thought I could receive the Sacraments without repentance and restitution simply because, by Church Law, I wasn't really married. Regardless, moral obligations remain and a tragedy has ocurred that I must take stock of and assess my own grave sin in the matter.
Hi Brian. We are not in a position to know with certainty exactly why Pope Francis did this. Regardless, whether deserved or not deserved the Pope is the Pope and has just authority to make this decision. No doubt history is full of political winners and losers suffered by both liberals and conservatives to each other. It is well known that for years JP2, possibly undeservedly, stacked the hierachy with conservatives to your liking and with many liberals losinng out. We all get it you believe he acted unjustly re this Cardinal. But its time to move on, everyone else here has why cannot you... What gain is there in your ongoing stoking of this fire here? If you think this means the Pope is antiChrist then and invalidly elected then admit that here and to yourself so you can move on. Of course that will prob mean you are in informal schism with us and the Church and will prob be banned here if that attitude likely poisons your later contributions here. But at least you will be moving and respected instead of stagnating which is worse. As Jesus put it, because you are neither hot nor cold... Or, you could take the even harder path and accept the Pope is the Pope not you and God wants you to outwardly and graciosly accept his decision whether wise or foolish in your eyes. Interior peace and insight will surely come later if you are able to bend your own will in external conformity.

Brian I am asking you to make up you mind, for your own sake, as your hurt wound looks to be festering. Make clear to us if you are able, and to yourself, ... is the Pope your Pope or not? To go on sitting on the fence as you are no longer seems helpful. Or just admit to yourself you cannot yet make that decision. Just take a stand rather than go on with the ongoing somewhat corrosive and unrecognised passive aggression against the Pope. We all get that but its not a healthy ongoing position.

How does that make Pell a current schismatic? He seems rather complimentary to Pope Francis to whom he has agreed to serve within the chosen closest collaborators. Where does he say that Pope Francis is an invalid Pope?
Ok, this post tells me everything I need to know about you here. JPII and BXVI appointed orthodox men to be bishops. Their decisions had nothing to do with politics and the political labels of liberal or conservative. That you think popes did not "deserve" to appoint orthodox bishops tells us much more about you than you realized when you made your incendiary post here.

Brian it is concerning that you are so untrustful of this forum that you, as a Catholic, are unable to affirm even that the Pope is your Pope when reasonably asked... That is really neither here nor there. But what it does likely mean is that you are also therefore unable to affirm that to yourself. It seems to me your contributions are intellectually/politicly acting out a deep emotional and personal hurt you really need to be dealing to in prayer. Your increasing misunderstanding of my relatively straight forward posts and the emotion in your responses confirms me in my observations. I wish you well -even if you cannot accept this presently.
Don't worry, I understand your posts for exactly what they are. I've dealt with your type too often to miss the hallmarks. I am deeply involved in pro-life and pro-family work and have been for many years. Our movement has suffered no greater setback than it did when this pope told us to "stop obsessing over contraception, abortion and homosexuality." Pope JPII said abortion was such a grave crime that cries out for vengeance that it is impossible to be too obsessed over it. BXVI said there was a hierarchy of moral issues, the most important of which are the sanctity of life and marriage. Nothing else comes close. Yet this pope tells us to stop obsessing over the very issues his predecessors instructed us as being the most important, and worry instead over temporal issues like youth unemployment. Of course you believe JPII abused his authority by appointing orthodox bishops and cardinals so I can't expect you to understand the upset that this inversion of values under our current pope is causing to orthodox Catholics.
