So excited and happy about Lent this year! I have always loved Lent. This year off the drink, dropping my beer and whiskey and wines down into the basement out of temptation; also hope to get off the nicotine I fell back into. Ready for Battle! May God bless you tons and tons of grace this 40 days; it seems to me good practice for the hard days coming right at us. So strange but Lent has always been a time of great joy for me.
Speaking of Lent - If anyone else knows of grear daily Lenten devotions, please post a link so we can all partake TY!
I’m hoping to give up social media (outside of this site and a few other Catholic ones), and also trying to do the traditional pre-Vatican II fast. Please pray that I’ll be able to do this and I will pray for all of our forum members this Lent.
https://open.spotify.com/episode/3C...Q&context=spotify:show:0aHRLkdrAKotzCNDmMGhSr I listened to this a few years back and decided to come back to it. It uses the private revelations if Ann Catherine Emmerich and Mary of Agreda.
Well 48 hours without a cigarette and nearly as long without a drink. Even without a spiritual/ religious content Lent is such a gift. If I can at least got of the cigarettes again this will be one of the best Lents ever. I needed Lent for the boost. Lent reminds me of a little War or a boxing match. It is kind of fun going into battle Fun, exciting, an adventure. I heard about a lady who had a drink problem. She is currently drinking about a bottle of wine a day. But she thinks this is perfectly normal. Perhaps how she might find out this is not normal would be if she tried to stop it for forty days. Lent is great for this, letting us lift stones to see what is under them in Dark Places.
That reminds me of a story about a local man who mentioned in conversation with a neighbour that he was taking a certain brand of cough medicine that happens to be codeine-based. The neighbour said "be careful with that stuff, it's very addictive", to which the man replied "goway out of that, sure I've been taking it every day for 40 years and I'm not addicted yet!"
A few years ago, I began adding Psalm 50 to the Holy Rosary—a small taste of Ash Wednesday each day. I consider this a penance and a sacrifice of praise, but also an inner light upon my weaknesses, through which I exalt God’s mercy and avoid taking pride in my own works. After all, in that psalm, contrition itself is offered as a sacrifice.
My father would give up drinking every Lent " just to prove i can do it" sort of a self check. For me its comfort food. I came across a wonderful short video by a young woman named Ana Munley. She explains her 3 1 1 rule for lent Give up 3 things in line with fighting the world the flesh and the devil. Add one thing. ( alms or holy hour or daily Mass etc) and stop one sin that you struggle with. She gives wonderful examples. Its on you tube. Worth watching.
It used to be in Ireland that so many men went of the drink that the pubs pretty well nearly had to close.
I decided this year to use the Ascension App- and follow Crux. Its being led by a Franciscan Friar of Renewal, Fr. Columba Jordan. Loved his Ash Wednesday reflection https://link.ascension-app.com/D6VnTmCDT0b
