I was reading a small life of Pope St Pius X this morning and one of the first things he did as Parish Priest was to establish Catechism Classes.

As Bishop of Mantua he asked his priests to make their homilies very simple so all could understand them. He warned the Father's never to assume people understood even the simplest truths of the Faith, no matter how learned they might be in other matters.

This all is true today, I think many , many Catholics remain ignorant about the Catholic Faith. So they are putty in the hands of those who wish to destroy it.

Thank you. The duration will be measurable by my degree of grumpiness.

Nowadays, it seems that many of those who should be teaching the Faith to us haven't the slightest knowledge of it.

I remember Corrie Ten Boom refusing to lie even to protect Jews that she was hiding. She ended up in a concentration camp. I used to lie all the time when I was a child--to avoid trouble mostly. Even as a young adult i had a loose relationship with truth. Horrifying. Fortinately the Holy Spirit got through to me. Satan is the Father of Lies. No lie can be good since it stems from the evil one. Now I just brave it out and tell the truth. If I slip up and exaggerate about something I immediately back up and say "no. That is not true. This is true..." Embarrassing but it helps to limit the slip ups.:(

    Ditto
I have had a slippery relationship with the truth in my life. Thankfully God has worked on me on that area.

Is it lying telling your children that Santa brings the presents on Christmas Day?

Oh boy, sensitive subject. :D A lie usually has bad intentions behind it. Parents tell young children about Santa not to deceive them, but out of love for them, a story told with good intentions. I always believed that as long as the focus of Christmas in the home is to celebrate the joy of Jesus' birth, I think it's okay for parents to enjoy those special Santa years with their children. :)

It is really weird but there has not been an update on the Pope's Health for three or four days. Google it and see for yourself. Usually they media are all over things like this

    ..but..

    Total silence.

I see the Roman Pontiff is to have a private meeting with Martin Scorsese; the mind fairly boggles.

By the way in case you forgot Martin Scorsese made a film called. 'The Last Temptation of Christ' , without doubt the most blasphemous film ever made. Satan pretends to be Mary Magdalen tempts Jesus of the Cross. Jesus and Satan have sex , have children and marry.

At the end Satan reveals to a dying Jesus he is not Mary Magdalen but Satan and Jesus cracks up.

This is the guy the Vicar of Christ has invited for a private audience.

    Fever permitting of course.

I won't even comment. Do I need to?

But perhaps he is trying to convert Martin Scorsese?

Perhaps he intends to have the Swiss Guards shoot him?

Perhaps we have misunderstood the Italian?

Perhaps someone made all this up?

Perhaps the faver has affected the Holy Father's mind?

    Etc, etc,etc.

I leave a lot of mystery to the whole Santa thing for my children and I take care not to tell actual lies. When my children ask particular questions about Santa, I say, "I don't know" or "No one knows for sure, but people think that he..."

I tell them Santa is a saint in Heaven. He is St. Nicholas. So all that stuff about living at the North Pole, well... Who knows what Santa gets up to, but we know for sure his permanent home is Heaven.

At our house he fills the stockings and brings one unwrapped present per child. I do say they're from Santa, but I consider myself Santa's helper. ;)

To me it's legend, which expresses truths like St. Nicholas' love for children and history of giving gifts. My children live in a fantasy world already, where they imagine anything and everything and pretend it's true. It's like being in their pretend world with them. If they ever start to express doubt, I will help them gradually become aware of the reality, and if they ask me point blank if Santa really brings the gifts, I will tell them the truth immediately.

I love St. Nicholas so much, I named my youngest son after him.
