I am in the camp that it did indeed happen but the reason we have not gone back is because we have put an awful lot of stuff on the darkside of the moon through funding of off budget funding. So it would make sense to now have a conspiracy theory around never going to the moon to dissuade from ever going again if you catch my drift.

I have no doubt that men landed on the Moon. However, I think the major story is that mankind would not now be capable of repeating the feat. Despite our alleged progress in science and technology, it seems to be far more common to hear nowadays of failed rocket launches. We might have better computers, but we have lesser men.

Yes, it really did happen. Of course, for you to believe that, you'd have to learn it from a trusted source, and I'm not quite sure where I stand in that.

I know I watched the "live camera feed" coming from the satellite via Mission Control in NASA, up until the moment it impacted. Quite amazing. Today I read that NASA has confirmed that the test was even more successful than hoped, having resulted in a much greater change in the object's orbit than expected. Ever since both of those movies came out ("Armageddon", with Bruce Willis -- keep him in your prayers -- as well as "Deep Impact", with Morgan Freeman as the President) back in 1998; both of those movies having an impact strike on earth as the main plot point, people have been wondering what WOULD we do if faced with such an event. So after 20+ years NASA got the go-ahead to find out.

FWIW, yes, we landed on the moon multiple times and returned the astronauts all safe and sound. With a strong enough telescope, you can see the "Tranquility Base" landing site.

Not too much as these things go. And you'll still have people who would consider that wasted money. People don't seem to consider the advantages of programs like this, if only in things like jobs created/kept.

Does this reported greater change than expected in the object's orbit fill you with confidence? Is it not concrete evidence of their not knowing what they're doing?

This calls to mind a mystic priest who had the same vision 3x in 1 day about 3 blackouts. We've been through the 1st. He explained they are of very different origins.

I truly do not understand that line of reasoning. This was an experiment. The primary purpose was to see if it would be possible to divert or deflect an object on a collision course with Earth. This showed that yes, it can be possible -- the experiment was successful. Experimentation is how scientific knowledge grows and develops.

They based their calculations of how much orbital change to expect on their estimates of the object's mass and composition, which were based on observations of similar objects and their knowledge of the composition of said objects. In addition to the change in the orbit, crashing the spacecraft into the object generated a huge, thousand-mile long dust plume streaming behind it. Scientists are examining that plume to see how closely their estimates of the object's composition match the reality, which they'll bake into their next set of calculations if they ever do this again.

Of COURSE they don't know exactly what they're doing -- that's what makes it science and not engineering. But they know enough about what they're doing to do this test on an object that can't hurt the earth if their calculations are wildly off.

They admitted that they didn't know the amount of change they would cause to the object's orbit. It is not impossible that they might inadvertently deflect a harmless object, or a piece of one, on a path towards the Earth. Also, as I'm sure they'd be the first to admit, any data from the dust plume is as likely to be deceptive as instructive of the constituency of another body, which might have a completely different composition, depending on its source.

Sorry, but I'm sceptical. Scientists seem to have become very hubristic. They insist that they know how to save the planet and this is the narrative of climate change, also. But it doesn't seem to occur to any of them that, if climate change is man-made, it is their science and technology which forms the main foundation of this and none of them seemed capable of predicting it. When one is mucking around with no real clue of most of what one is doing, perhaps it is best not to do it at all?

There is a prophecy by someone but I can't remember who now, who saw an asteroid heading to earth and she or he saw governments deploying nuclear weapons to divert its path. The seer saw like a hand of God diverting the missile so that the asteroid stayed on course.

Does anyone remember reading this one? Who saw this? Just posting it because this experiment reminded me of it.
