Novena to the Holy SpiritFriday after Ascension Thursday -- Saturday, the Vigil of PentecostThis is the prototype of all novenas. It commemorates the nine days between the Ascension of Our Lord and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost Sunday. During this time Our Lady and the twelve Apostles prayed in the upper room for the coming of the Paraclete. This prayer to the Holy Spirit is a simple novena to the Holy Spirit by itself O Holy Spirit, O my God, I adore Thee, and acknowledge, here in Thy divine presence, that I am nothing and can do nothing without Thee. Come, great Paraclete, Thou father of the poor, Thou comforter the best, fulfil the promise of our blessed Savior, Who would not leave us orphans, and come into the mind and the heart of Thy poor, unworthy creature, as Thou didst descend on the sacred day of Pentecost on the holy Mother of Jesus and on His first disciples. Grant that I may participate in those gifts which Thou didst communicate to them so wonderfully, and with so much mercy and generosity. Take from my heart whatever is not pleasing to Thee, and make of it a worthy dwelling-place for Thyself. Illumine my mind, that I may see and understand the things that are for my eternal good. Inflame my heart with pure love of Thee, that I may be cleansed from the dross of all inordinate attachments, and that my whole life may be hidden with Jesus in God. Strengthen my will, that I may be made conformable to Thy divine will, and be guided by Thy holy inspirations. Aid me by Thy grace to practice the divine lessons of humility, poverty, obedience, and contempt of the world, which Jesus taught us in His mortal life.Oh, rend the heavens, and come down, consoling Spirit! that inspired and encouraged by Thee, I may faithfully comply with the duties of my state, carry my daily cross most patiently, and endeavor to accomplish the divine will with the utmost perfection. Spirit of love! Spirit of purity! Spirit of peace! Sanctify my soul more and more, and give me that heavenly peace which the world cannot give. Bless our Holy Father the Pope, bless the Church, bless our bishops, our priests, all Religious Orders, and all the faithful, that they may be filled with the spirit of Christ and labor earnestly for the spread of His kingdom.O Holy Spirit, Thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I beseech Thee, the intentions of this novena. May Thy will be done in me and through me. Mayest Thou be praised and glorified forevermore! Amen. Read more: http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/pent12.htm#ixzz2SodY3FUn
FOREWORD The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian. Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRITOn my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen. To be recited daily during the Novena PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen. FIRST DAY (Friday, 6th Week of Easter) Holy Spirit! Lord of Light! From Your clear celestial height, Your pure beaming radiance give! The Holy Spirit Only one thing is important -- eternal salvation. Only one thing, therefore, is to be feared--sin? Sin is the result of ignorance, weakness, and indifference The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Light, of Strength, and of Love. With His sevenfold gifts He enlightens the mind, strengthens the will, and inflames the heart with love of God. To ensure our salvation we ought to invoke the Divine Spirit daily, for "The Spirit helpeth our infirmity. We know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit Himself asketh for us." Prayer Almighty and eternal God, Who hast vouchsafed to regenerate us by water and the Holy Spirit, and hast given us forgiveness all sins, vouchsafe to send forth from heaven upon us your sevenfold Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and fortitude, the Spirit of Knowledge and Piety, and fill us with the Spirit of Holy Fear. Amen. Our Father and Hail Mary ONCE. Glory be to the Father SEVEN TIMES. thank you HOPE for posting the prayers for this novena to the Holy Spirit. If I prayed the novena in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, surely I ought to pray the novena prior to Pentacost Sunday. But until you posted I knew nothing of it! I hope (pun !) you will post each days prayers.
Yes Jerry, I will post each day's prayers to the novena, as Sunburst did with the Divine Mercy Novena. I think it helps to keep us on track. The people of Medjugorje do this novena each year in preparation for Pentacost and this is what the Blessed Virgin Mary told them. June 2, 1984 (Saturday) "Dear children! Tonight I wish to tell you during the days of this novena to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on your families and on your parish. Pray, and you shall not regret it. God will give you gifts by which you will glorify Him till the end of your life on this earth. Thank you for having responded to my call."
I'm confused. Hope, you post a prayer in your first post, a different prayer in your second post and again, a different prayer in your third post. Do I pray all of them? If so, in what order. I'm terribly confused, sorry...
The first post, the prayer, is a simple novena to the Holy Spirit itself which can be said anytime. I like it myself for a daily prayer and I posted it in case any one wanted to just do that for a novena, as that is a novena prayer itself. From the second post down it is an explanation of the novena to the Holy Spirit and then the novena for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit which is traditionaly done in preparation for Pentacost. You do each day's daily prayer which I will post with 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and 7 Glory Be's and also each day do the Act of Consecration prayer and the prayer for the 7 gifts each day. see http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven.htm
Thank you Hope, for posting this novena.. I have for some time now been thinking about doing some special prayers to the Holy Spirit,...so when you posted it today,..I began. Now upon reflection this novena is the perfect set of prayers to prepare me for my profession into the Third Order Marists. This novena ends on the 19th the same day I will make my profession. So right now I am thanking the Holy Spirit for inspiring you to post this. This will be a very special day, indeed,..Cardinal Sean O'Malley will be the principal celebrant of the Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church in Boston, and the Church will also be rededicated as a parish of the Archdiocese. Come Holy Spirit ! ! ! God Bless, Hope..
Oh Hope, thanks so much for this! However, with my focus on the Holy Spirit's beloved Spouse, I hope he accepts a truncated novena! Safe in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary!
