Why don't you ask Jonathon Roumie he has a FB site. He's not Jesus, he's not a Priest, he's an actor. The Chosen is a tv show it's not gospel. There will always be different interpretations, even in artwork Mary is depicted as blonde, blue eyed, German, Italian depending on the artist who portrays her. I really like the show, it makes me think. It makes me pick up the bible and read it, I think that is the goal. I'm really looking forward to future sessions . . .

Here is a post from Jonathon's FB page showing the same picture as above with the skull mug. "For those who have issues with the skull…please look up Memento Mori and it’s meanings. You might learn something, as I did. And maybe be a little less judgemental in the process. ❤️" This was posted by a fan. I looked it up and the skull is a reminder of death. It was used a lot in the old days on headstones to keep Christians on the straight and narrow and remind them death is inevitable. Actors and artists take liberty in using symbolism . . .its expression. I worry about The Chosen being attacked by the dark side since it is fresh, new, and ecumenical. There are some things that are not totally Catholic in it, but there is so much to learn. They are exploring Mary in the series . . .we know the end of the story! The deciples were in a huge learning curve . . .the tradition and times are very well done, and I try not to be too judgemental. So, I am speaking For the project.

I agree… I enjoy the show and approach it as entertainment - not gospel , not theology, and tbh not always the Catholic pov. In fact, the show from what I understand purposely takes the perspective of the disciples and other of “the Chosen” followers of Jesus as they discover and come to know him. While very ambitious, the executive producer (Dallas ? ) is hoping this will go 7-8 seasons. On the app they have a section called deep dive where Dallas talks with a Catholic priest, Protestant minister, and Jewish rabbi ( there’s a joke somewhere here :D) and they talk about each episode from their perspectives. There is very honest conversation on what may be lacking or even wrong from those perspectives. Dallas is honest and appears willing to try and get it more aligned as series continue.

Again, my pov…. It’s good entertainment, no worries about my kids watching it, and leads to very thought provoking considerations on who Jesus is to me.

Yes, I’m quite familiar with Momento Mori, thanks.

I still find this image incongruous with the Christian concept of Momento Mori. This depiction of a skull looks like many associated with non Christian art involving skulls.

Pointing this out, and his unfortunate association with Fr. James Martin, is neither an “attack” on him personally or The Chosen.

Maybe he just liked the look of the mug and didn’t think too much of it. Where is the harm if the skull serves it’s purpose by reminding him of his mortality? What difference does it make how the skull looks. Someone may see a masonic symbolism in its design, but it will have no power if the person in posession of the item doesn’t think about it that way or use it for some masonic purposes.
From what I have seen, he is very devoted to the sacred heart of Jesus, he prays novenas on his channel, he prays to the saints and is very spiritual in a good way. I will make up my mind about him by the fruits he brings forth and not by the look of his mug he once posted online…

Good friends of mine know him personally. He is affiliated with a catholic prayer app. as a hire to read catholic prayers. They think he is wonderful. Very, very catholic.
I’ll ask them about these concerns, but I’m thinking they may be unwarranted criticism. The Fr. Martin thing might not have been his doing…who knows, I don’t. If I learn anything, I’ll let you know.

According to Roumie, Fr. James Martin is one of his favorite authors, writing on one of his favorite subjects.

It's obvious that he chose to project this image. I can say there were saints who kept a skull nearby to remind them of the certainty of death! But I don't think that is the case here?

Pray, Dear Lady, for Jonathan Roumie!

There may be the euphoric naivete of a new believer at work here. He sees Fr Martin as reaching out to the marginalized and for him perhaps it is the love of Christ in action.

Oh no, that's not good... I will be praying for him.
But I have hope that the show will not steer into this direction as it has independent production and the director Dallas Jenkins looks like he won't go into these extremes in order to not upset a large portion of his audience. Or to ruin the credibility of the show he built by some woke nonsense.

I thought so too, he converted only recently if I remember correctly... Must be a hard task for a recently converted actor living in Hollywood to stay true to traditional values when they are trampled all around you, being replaced by new woke standards that are praised as the highest good by all around. And even by a priest who used your naivity to promote his heretical ideas, who seemingly knows how to connect the good of newfound God with these new, curved values you are being fed with, helping you find some sense in it all. But finding sense in a senseless world is an impossible task.
Whatever his personal believes are, we should pray for him, so God would open his eyes and steer him in a right direction.

He grew up with an Irish Catholic mother and an Egyptian Orthodox father. He practiced the Orthodox faith while younger but eventually gravitated towards Catholicism. So he’s not a “recent” convert, having practiced Apostolic Christianity his entire life.

I don’t know enough about him or his religious history. Do you think it’s possible that Martin used him as a tool? Honest question…I really hope he wasn’t used. If he is fully aware of Martins mission, then it would be a thumbs down for me.
We want to bring the lbgt community back to the faith…the real faith….Not change the truth for any group. Maybe he doesn’t know Martin…? Just wondering….
