I remember when they tried to shut up Father Goring as well, but Father Goring is still posting You Tubes and speaking Truth every day, I just watched this one over the weekend:

Yes I know, but he ceased immediately out of obedience when he was asked. I am certain that Fr. would not be posting videos without his superiors permission.

To be factual, Father Goring had the exact same reaction as Father Altman. Father Goring immediately appealed the order to "cease and desist" to Pope Francis, the exact same canonical path that Father Altman says he plans to take. Here's the quote (and by the way after he was silenced, Father Goring moved away from Houston where this happened up to his home diocese in Ontario, Canada, where he started as a priest, I'd assume the bishop there who ordained him was a friend and welcomed him home away from the wolves who were after him, that's why he's speaking freely again): https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/s...iest-on-sex-abuse-scandal-to-cease-and-desist
    "
Goring posted in the comment section of the January 5 cease and desist video, “I am not available for comments. Please do not give up on Jesus. And do not give up on the Church which He established. Viva Cristo Rey!”

Goring said in the follow-up January 8 video that he was glad to enter into the silence of St. Joseph.

“However, there’s that scripture from Jeremiah,” he said. “I feel like there’s a fire burning in my heart that I can’t contain.”

He cited St. Catherine of Siena saying, “We’ve had enough of exhortations to be silent. Cry out with a thousand tongues - I see the world is rotten because of silence.”

Goring recounted how he presented lots of video talks on silence, but he now found himself in a situation where he didn’t know what to do.

“I honestly don’t know what to do,” Goring said in the subsequent video posted Tuesday. “What I feel like doing is appealing to the pope.”

“And maybe I can do this over YouTube,” he said. “Can I do this? Can I ask, Holy Father, do I have your permission to continue to comment on the situation in the Church?”

“I give you my word that I’ll do my very best to comment on the situation with love,” he added. “I’ll try to not be critical or to let anger come in. I’ll try to be honest, as honest as I possibly can be.”

I agree. FP. I felt that same sense of things as soon as I saw and read about the pachamama desecration. I knew in my heart a terrible line had been crossed.

"Saint Paul commands us to obey all superiors, even those who are bad. Our Blessed Saviour, His Virgin Mother, and Saint Joseph have taught us this kind of obedience in the journey they took from Nazareth to Bethlehem, when Caesar published an edict that his subjects should repair to the place of their nativity to be enrolled. They complied with this order with the most affectionate obedience, though the Emperor was a pagan and an idolator, so desirous was Our Lord of showing us that we should never regard the persons of those who command, provided they be invested with sufficient authority.”
--Saint Francis of Sales, Doctor of the Church

"The more we see that any action springs not from the motive of obedience, the more evident is it that it is a temptation of the enemy; for when God sends an inspiration, the very first effect of it is to infuse a spirit of docility.”
--Saint Teresa of Avila, Doctor of the Church

”God is more pleased to behold the lowest degree of obedience, for His sake, than all other good works which you can possibly offer to Him.”
--Saint John of the Cross, Doctor of the Church

”He who follows his own ideas in opposition to the direction of his superiors needs no devil to tempt him, for he is a devil to himself.”
    --Saint John Climacus

It sounds like Fr. Goring had a very humble and honest grappling within himself on what he should do, and appealing to the pope with love and humility is ok. Fr. Altman has a very different demeanor that seems to be encouraging outrage and condemnation against his bishop.

The image of Fr. Altman standing on the rooftop under the rainbow does not bring me comfort, there is something off. It screams celebrity priest with his adoring followers. We now have a new sort of justice that is generated by the emotional reactions of a mob mentality. Humility is totally missing from the picture, and this disturbs me. It is possible that there is more going on here that we are aware of. I am in no way saying that Fr. Altman is not speaking the truth, but his behavior in this situation gives me pause.

good gravy, Jo. Do you know the facts of why Father Altman was up on that roof? He was blessing his (former) parishioners with Epiphany water. And God blesses the event with the rainbow. I know, the nerve of him, eh?

FatimaPilgrim, Thank you for noting there was a rainbow that Father Altman could NOT of produced, only God could. This should give people pause before making judgement about this priest.

Neither the civil law, nor the divine law, can be kept in any degree without holy justice, because he who is not corrected, and does not correct others, becomes like a limb which putrefies, and corrupts the whole body, because the bad physician, when it had already begun to corrupt, placed ointment immediately upon it, without having first burnt the wound. So, were the prelate, or any other lord having subjects, on seeing one putrefying from the corruption of mortal sin, to apply to him the ointment of soft words of encouragement alone, without reproof, he would never cure him, but the putrefaction would rather spread to the other members, who, with him, form one body under the same pastor.- St. Catherine of Siena on "The Dialogue of the Seraphic Virgin"

Yes, PF, the above is very clear. In this age of instant news, I believe Fr. Altman's decision to appeal was based on his Bishop's vagueness as to the reason for the suspension of duties: "You're ineffective." However, even deacons when ordained make a promise of obedience to their bishop; it mirrors the same pledge of obedience the priests make; it is very clear:

Then, each candidate goes individually to the bishop to make the promise of obedience. He kneels before him and places his joined hands between the hands of the bishop while making the promise.

[IMG]After all the diaconal candidates have made the promise of obedience, the bishop invites the people to pray that the “Father will mercifully pour out his blessings on these servants whom, in his kindness, he raises to the sacred Order of the diaconate.” In one of the more dramatic moments in the liturgy, all the diaconal candidates will lay prostrate on the floor, while everyone else will kneel in prayer for them.

But then, I do not know what latitude Canon Law allows for recourse. But my instincts do support obedience. Lord bring this public debacle to a quick resolution, the one which glorifies God above all.

Safe in the Barque of Peter!

We should note that Fr. Altman was not ORDERED by the bishop to resign, but REQUESTED by his bishop to resign. Since it was a request not an order, the issue of obedience does not come up.
