And here is something hopeful on this subject: apparently tomorrow, March 21st, is World Down Syndrome Day. I saw this today, a dance video put together for March 21st by a French family who adopted a 4-year old girl with Down Syndrome and started an association to raise awareness on adopting a child with a handicap (the little one shows up dancing towards the end). The couple had six natural children (!) and adopted two more with handicaps, including one with DS. The process took years and they met with much resistance from people who didn't understand why anyone would want to adopt a handicapped child. They are profiled by the Institut Jerôme Lejeune which advocates for people with DS. The family has a FB page here where people can share videos of their dance from all over the world in support of DS.

There is truth in the old saying that “Coming events cast their shadows before them.” We have had so many warnings. Auckland is built on 49 volcanoes and Rangitoto - the backdrop to The Americas Cup - is just offshore not to mention White Island and Ruapehu. The first thing you notice on driving into Rotorua is the smell of sulphur. The whole area is one of constant seismic activitity.
