Oh, I have quite the family! 2 of my brothers are forum members and my sister and I talk about this stuff every day. Nice to have so many ears to the ground, batting opinions and interpretations around, keeping tabs on each other. It is interesting to read about using Hawthorn leaves to make a tea to cure illness. I am sure Maria Esperanza had given a recipe for Hawthorn leaves to make tea to cure illness in children in case of plague. It had to be left to steep and used a little at a time every few hours for children with fever and some sort of spots.

How should I dry the hawthorn leaves if I were to pick some in the summer? Should I put them in a bowl and wait until they dry out? Should I wash them first, and how long would it take for them to dry out?

Thank you. I will have to remove the blossoms before bringing them indoors. Fortunately only the leaves are required to make the medicinal tea recommended by Marie Julie Jehenny. I can put them in a bag and leave them to dry in the airing cupboard.
I just came across this post from 2016 and it is interesting to read how similar to corona virus the plague is described (apart from the spots). It is the first post on this thread, so easy to find. Thank you Lynnfiat.
More commonly called the "hot press" here, it's the cupboard for the hot water tank. There are shelves beside and above the tank where we usually store towels. Before the days of tumbler dryers, washing would be stored in the hotpress to "air" after being taken in from the clothes line. Don't forget, Don, that scorching sunshine is a rare event here. We too rarely see the sun for a great part of the year. Thank you for explaining it, it makes perfect sense. I remember as a child that my aunts house which was built back in the 1930's had a linen closet by her water heater and it had some gaps inside it that opened into the water tank closet. I always wondered what it was about but I was deathly afraid of her (she knew many ways to inflict short bursts of incredible pain on unruly children like me) so I avoided asking her anything or being seen often in the house. Now I know. Sounds like a great place to dry out herbs or a bit of pipe tobacco.
