And the fact that Pope Francis got sick around the same time this all kicked off in Italy.

"Sin leaves us weak and helpless but divine grace heals and strengthens" from Rosary Confraternity prayer.

A death rate of 3.5% is very high compared to normal flu which is 0.1%

Just depends then the numbers that get infected - hopefully containment policies work

I do believe the normal flu so far has a higher incidence and death rate. I don't have a link for that though.

I think we need to take a step back and remember a time still in many of our memories of a truly TERRIFYING outbreak that happened every year: Polio.

I couldn't find the clip I was looking for, which was a newsreel showing empty parks and movie theaters saying stuff like "CLOSED DUE TO POLIO". We need to look at what the Church did at that time to figure out what to do today.

Normal flu has higher incidence yes. But a much lower mortality rate.

Flu has a mortailty rate of 0.1%

Coronavirus WHO estiamtes at 3.5% mortality rate

    That's 35 times more deadly.

I doubt we know enough about COVID-19 to draw final conclusions. I think Joan is right, 0.1% seems low for 'flu. We must also remember that the mortality rate for H5N1 (avian influenza) was 60% and that of SARS 10%. The current mortality rate may eventually play out at a lower rate as infection spreads further with corresponding stimulus of immunity. The human race is rather immunologically 'naked' at this seminal stage of the infection, but this is likely to alter with time.

I still find it interesting that the virus seems to have concentrated so spectacularly in a few specific areas; Martini's Milan, Rome, Iran and in its origin in China. There are relatively few outbreaks, despite concerns, in most of the rest of the world. Has there been a case in Africa, home of many recent martyrs? I continue to be surprised that Germany has so far been spared. Perhaps God has something else in store for the German heretics, conceivably another huge wave of young male Mohammedans?

This is so important for people to understand. This could possibly die out but if we don't take it seriously as a society and it infects 30 to 40 percent of the world population, this will be one of the deadliest outbreaks in world history.

A ton of people come down with some strain of flu world wide every year. Many do die from it. Because the US is not yet testing for it but in very few high risk groups, we WON'T know real statistics.

This is certainly not the first Coronavirus. But it is a nasty strain of one.
