    Mother Teresa's best answer?

'I am not a Social Worker'.

In other words what I am doing comes from prayer and is carried by prayer.

    It is supernatural.

In one of the older threads, davidtlig had information that Sr Sasagawa was indeed living in Kumamoto.

  3. A friend who had visited the original convent a year or so ago, where the messages were given to Sister, said that there is hardly anyone coming to pray there. No one there talks about what happened and the locals don't think it's anything special. Of course it was an enclave of a religion unfamiliar for the most part to the population. I think too that for the more recent type of "ecumenism" the Church doesn't wish to make waves or "push" anything that causes any kind of misunderstanding with the status quo secular leadership.

Some years ago a local radio program had someone on who followed Akita who said that both Sister Agnes and Bishop Ito were in a nursing home and had no contact with anyone much from the outside. I think it was after that that the Church changed anything favorable towards these happenings w/ perhaps following local bishop/s giving more statements of doubt or inconclusiveness.

  4. From a much much longer statement by Bishop Ito re: his assessment of Akita, reported by The Miracle Hunter:

APRIL, 1984 -- Most. Rev. John Shojiro Ito, Bishop of Niigata, Japan, after years of extensive investigation, declares the events of Akita, Japan to be of supernatural origin, and authorizes throughout the entire diocese the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita.

On April 22, 1984, after eight years of investigations, after consultation with the Holy See, the messages of Our Lady of Akita were approved by the Bishop of the diocese. In the Japanese village of Akita, a statue of the Madonna, according to the testimony of more than 500 Christians and non-Christians, including the Buddhist mayor of the town, has shed blood, sweat and tears. A nun, Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa has received the stigmata and has received messages from Our Lady.

Pastoral Letter of Bishop John Shojiro Ito April 22, 1984

    ........

"I have known Sr. Agnes Sasagawa for more than ten years. She is a woman sound in spirit, frank and without problems; she has always impressed me as a balanced person. Consequently the messages she says that she has received did not appear to me to be in any way the result of imagination or hallucination.

As for the content of the messages received, there is nothing contrary to Catholic doctrine or morals, and when one thinks of the actual state of the world, the warning seems to correspond to it in many points.

Having set down here my experiences and my reflections with regard to the events relative to the statue of the Holy Virgin of Akita, I esteem it my duty, as Ordinary of the diocese, to respond to the requests of the faithful to give pastoral directives on this subject. It is only the bishop of the diocese in question who has the power of recognizing a fact of this kind. The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith has given me directives in this regard.

I have been in close and constant communication with the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist since its foundation. I know precisely the situation concerning this Institute and its members. In studying the history of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary up to this day, I am aware that it is always the local ordinary of the diocese who has authorized the veneration of the Virgin Mary when She has manifested Herself in their dioceses.

After long prayer and mature reflection, I hand down the following conclusions in my position as Bishop of Niigata:

    1. After the investigation conducted up to the present day, I recognize the supernatural character of a series of mysterious events concerning the statue of the Holy Mother Mary which is found in the convent of the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist at Yuzawadai, Soegawa, Akita.
I do not find in these events any elements which are contrary to Catholic faith and morals.

    2. Consequently, I authorize, throughout the entire diocese, the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita, while awaiting that the Holy See publishes definitive judgment on this matter.
And I ask that it be remembered that even if the Holy See later publishes a favorable judgment with regard to the events of Akita, it is a question only of a private Divine revelation. Christians are bound to believe only content of public Divine revelation (closed after the death of the last Apostle) which contains all that is necessary for salvation. Nevertheless, the Church, until now, has equally made much of private Divine revelations as they fortify the faith. For reference, I cite the following texts of the document on Catholic Doctrine:

"The saints and the angels, having been conformed to the Will of God receive from Him grace and glory in abundance and it is right to venerate them because this amounts to offering praise and thanksgiving to God Himself. Among the saints the Virgin Mary deserves a special veneration. Indeed, She is not only the Mother of Our Savior who is God, but also the Mother of us all, and it is as Mother that She intercedes for us, full of Divine grace greater than those received by all the saints and angels." (Article 72)

"One venerates the statues and images of Christ and of the saints to sustain the faith, to adore Christ, to venerate the saints. This act thus becomes praise to God." (Article 170)
Finally, I beg God that He accord to you all abundant graces, and I send my Apostolic blessings.

    • 1988: Ito meets with Cardinal Ratzinger, head of the CDF, in June. Ratzinger gives his verbal approval to Ito's 1984 letter,[31] but without rendering "judgement about the credibility of the events."[39][40]
The Holy See never rendered definitive judgement, either positive or negative.[41] Because Ito's declaration of approval has not been reversed by his successors or by the Holy See, the apparition remains officially approved according to the guidelines of the Catholic Church.[42]

    1. Ata, John. "A Message From Our Lady - Akita, Japan". EWTN. Despite claims that Cardinal Ratzinger gave definitive approval to Akita in 1988, no ecclesiastical decree appears to exist, as certainly would in such a case. However, some individuals, such as former Ambassador of the Phillipines[sic] to the Holy See, Mr. Howard Dee, have stated that they were given private assurances by Cardinal Ratzinger of the authenticity of Akita. In any case, in keeping with the current norms, given the absence of a repudiation of Bp. Ito's decision by his successors, or by higher authority, the events of Akita continue to have ecclesiastical approval.

I have no doubt Akita is true.

However I would have concerns about recent unsourced messages.

Don't drink water from strange wells without asking questions.

Maybe Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa said these things. Maybe she didn't.

    Who knows really?
    Strange wells, strange water.

“Put on ashes (note 2) and pray for a repentant rosary every day. You (Sr. Agnes) must become like a child and make sacrifice every day.”
I do not believe it really matters if Sisters prophecy is true or not, should we not all be offering little sacrifices, making reparation and praying the Rosary every day? Should we not be like little children accepting all that God wills for us. What we all are called to do is to pray for others as this world and our church is in chaos because of sin. A sacrifice could be just getting up early in the morning to go to Mass when we feel like sleeping in. It could be taking care of someone sick when you don't feel like it. It can be taking someone's Holy Hour of Adoration when they are unable to be there and you want to do something else. How about those who work at jobs they dislike and wives who must take care of their house, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. when they just don't feel like doing it. If we are praying one Rosary, can we offer two - or if two, then can we offer three. We can offer so much during our day as a sacrifice - but offering it through Our Blessed Mother in our Morning Offering as she makes all sacrifices perfect. Reparation should be made every day, and there is so much reparation to be made - just look around you.
The word "ashes" struck me because many years ago I had been thinking how incapable I am of doing anything without God and thought to myself how I am but ashes and dust. I immediately heard, "Yes, but you are My ashes and dust, and I love you!" God loves us so much and how can we not offer Him our little sacrifices, reparations and Rosaries so He can save souls. Therefore, does it really matter if Sisters prophecy is true or not?

I was so excited when I read the report about this new message, but I have to agree with you; we just don't know if Sr. Agnes said these things. It does seem a little off that a new Akita message has pretty much gone unnoticed with the exception of the one lone report. One would think that by now someone like Michael Matt, who did the video about the 'conspiracy to silence' on Akita, would have picked up this story. A message of this nature is a pretty big deal, and normally everyone in catholic media would be weighing in on this by now. Strange.

It always matter what tree a fruit falls from. The devil rarely tells direct lies. He always tells half ones. He mixes the good with the bad. The first message might seem sound then the next ones may be bad. If we accept the first one we might more readily accept the next ones.

We have opened the door of our hearts to a stranger. We have let him in.

There should be a story in Spirit Daily, or in other places, if the new Akita information is out there. Much to pray about, true or not.

Also I would like to add that it was back in 1973 that the Angel first appeared to Sister Agnes and it was on that first appearance that Sister Agnes was taken aback and mistakenly though it might be her sister. The Angel immediately corrected her, and she never again believed the Angel was her sister. It has been mentioned in this new account as a way of letting us know the identity of the Angel who has now spoken to her recently on October 6th. It is the same Angel that first appeared to her all those years ago and who has guided her since then.

Knowing little about Akita, I was searching around for information about this new message, and I came across a number of comments on various Catholic forums that discussed the subject of the angel. There were a number of people who had difficulty accepting the authenticity of the Akita messages because they couldn't get past the female angel. I am assuming that if Sr. Agnes thought the angel was her sister, then the angel must have looked Japanese, which is entirely possible. Since the angel was referred to as 'she', I wonder if it is beyond the realms of possibility that there is a connection between the following message and the female angel.

The angel appeared to Sister on the last day the statue wept.

    She said,

“There is meaning to the figure one hundred one. This signifies that sin came into the world by a woman and it is also by a woman that salvation came into the world. the zero between the two signifies the eternal God who is from all eternity until eternity. The first one represents Eve and the last the Virgin Mary.”

To whoever it is that is concerned that the angel appeared feminine - read Zechariah 5:9-11.
