They're certainly obsessed with what they claim to have no being. If God did not exist, they certainly would have to invent him. They are spending astonishing amounts of money and deploying enormous political effort in order to suppress allegiance to a Being they claim does not exist.

When Ireland began this dark journey I thought immediately of Quebec. When they were poor and surrounded by English pressure they were fiercely devout. When prosperity came they morphed almost over night to the most liberal and hedonistic of people. There is a remnant but the bulk of Quibecois seem totally bent on this world.
I would not be surprised to see this same decline in nearly all countries today. I also suppose, had this been a weekly poll, the percentage would be much worse. Bottom line, whether the keep the Lord's day holy once a year, once a month or on occasion they still live in grave sin against the third commandment if not keeping the Lords day holy every week. Just look at the state of the Catholic clergy today and you might find 20% still faithful in all ways.
Despite his difficulties with Catholicism-he seems to have imagined a connection between French Catholicism and French political liberalism, a link that did not exist in the nineteenth century, but one which is currently rife in most European (and South American) Catholicism-Dostoevsky is very much a devout and orthodox Christian and well worth reading. Some have likened him to a prophet and he certainly foresaw the rise of bolshevism and nihilism. I agree with your point on Ireland having little or no international influence.. they came, they saw, they conquered. And they took our oil and gas (to such an extent that most people here in Ireland don't even know what reserves we actually possess). Then they told us to sack our God. So we did. They told us to kill our babies. So we did. They told us to live immoral lives. And so we live immoral lives. What'd we get back? Nice roads, bigger houses, faster cars and loads of debt. We just rolled-over! Why in under God would they listen to we 'yes-men' internationally... Trumps coming to ireland next week. I came across a quote from scripture this morning which took me aback, for I never recall reading this before: 1 Peter 4:18 Suffering as Christians …17For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? 18And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.… So it is according to St Peter , the first Pope, The Rock, it is , 'Hard', for the righteous to be saved'. This echoes the words of Jesus to strive enter by the Narrow Gate. The attitude of many today is don't worry God is a God of Mercy He'll fix things; hell is empty anyway. But these words of Peter and quite the reverse. If we tell perverts and baby killers that things will be fine, for instance we're not doing them any favours, quite the reverse.
Actually the late Cardinal O' Fiach said those exact same words about Ireland shortly before is sudden death in Lourdes. Wow. Interesting take. I know Fulton Sheen admired Dostoevsky and often quoted him. Some of his characters are almost prophetic. And let's face it the French gave us Teillhard and some other modernist Church figures. France lost it's way in the WWI and 1920's hedonism. Sartre and Simone deBeauvoir were emblematic of loss of faith. So so sad. Perhaps Dosteovsky picked up this link and it soured him on the whole Church. He foresaw something perhaps.
Because those DO who believe in this "Being they claim does not exist" are less likely to fall into their thrall. And while they may eventually get people who are willing to march in the street and be killed, or to throw themselves into the fire, these "martyrs to the truth" don't do it out of love or a faith in an eternal reward. They do it out of despair.
