I don't think the Catholic Church has ever officicially pronounced any individual to be in Hell. To quote early Graham Greene, "we know Hell exists, we just don't know if there is anyone in it". Needless to say, but I'm saying it, one must also keep in one's head the danger of presumption and the risk of universalist heresy. Greene's statement nevertheless remains true. Was reading an archived First Things article last night by the late Father Richard John Neuhaus on Dostoevsky (I was trying to find an explanation for the great Russian novelist's animus against the Catholic Church, having just finished his 'The Idiot'). I didn't find a detailed explanation for what I was seeking, but learned much else, nonetheless. What primarily struck me was Dostoevsky's insight that, while Faith and Reason rhyme, it is very presumptuous of Man to elevate his Reason to being above all else in the Universe, whereby we arrogantly assume we can know all that there is to be known. More than likely, the science which we see being idolised is a mere scratching of the surface. Not all scientists possess this arrogance, but those, for example, who claim to know all there is to know about the future climatic destiny of this planet might very well be in for a rude awakening, or at least some of their successors. The danger is that those who, compared to most of their contemporaries, know a lot about their chosen field tend to assume that they know a lot more than they actually do, and who is qualified to contradict them? In reality, due to human intellectual limitations, the more an individual learns about one subject, the less time and resources are available to acquire knowledge about anything else, so that they risk a complete loss of perspective.

Sometimes I think hatred can be just another side of love. I can understand someone being an atheist, but why would anyone want to Evangelise Atheism? I mean why should an Atheist care if other people believe or not? Why should they care? Such ardent folk make me wonder if maybe they are fighting against their father or something.
