I think we are finding out exactly what that phrase means right now. Jesus and the early Church were not beaten even though His enemies killed Him and scattered His followers. So perhaps the above phrase does not mean what many took it to mean that the Church is inviolable. Perhaps the Church can become quite decimated again as it was in the beginning...
All that helps me make sense of this, is Catholic prophecy that the Church herself would go through a great trial, a Passion, similar to that of Christ. Imagine the disciples' thoughts as they watched all this. Ok, now He's going to break away and triumph. Ok, now. Now? And until the final moment, they may have hoped that He would come down from the Cross and scatter the Romans with a wind storm, and then, He died. He not only died, He was taken down from the Cross, buried, and a seal was put on His tomb to make sure no one messed with it. How would any of us here in 2018 hope that something good or victorious might still occur? How can anyone recover from being killed and buried? If death had no power over Christ, logically, the gates of Hell must have no power over the Church. But what it looks like to be a Catholic Christian in coming decades might sound and look nothing like anything obvious or public. We might have to keep the Faith in our hearts.

Sometimes when I awake in the morning, I feel as though I am awaking into a nightmare, where I see no light at the end of a very dark tunnel. Maybe we need to do like Padraig and go on a nice camping trip, a retreat so to speak and come back refreshed and ready again for battle

I get it And we have to live with the fact that our Pontiff is appointing these people I think we need to look at it from the perspective that it is part of the separation of the sheep from the goats I keep forgetting that
As horrible as all of this stuff is, I am just glad that it is being done in the open for everyone to see. There is really no denying what is going on now for anyone who takes the time to look into things even slightly. So many more souls will be saved because the evil and corruption is so highly visible now.
