I’m sorry HH, I didn’t mean to come off sounding aggressive towards you personally at all. Music at the Mass is a very personal topic for me, something that I’ve been involved in for a long time. I believe it is a much more serious topic than what people think it is, because in the end it drives our thoughts and behaviors during the Mass (except for those minority of us who try to ignore the atrocities and sincerely try to pray the Mass in our hearts, of course). Many excellent posts on this thread DM! Music is so important in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The choice of music can't just be "religious" it must also be something special that uplifts the soul. Almost into a meditative state of sorts. I don't care for hippie folk music, but I do not begrudge anyone who gets a lift in spirits from it. If it brings you to a good place then I say listen to it. I just don't think it belongs in the Mass. I listen to some Christian rock music and I find it uplifting in a strong emotional way, but I would never think it appropriate to have at a Mass. Music is something so ethereal and special that it touches the emotion and the soul. It evokes a mood, even if we don't realize it. The music chosen for a Mass should be something that evokes thought, seriousness and prayer. Not toe tapping and clapping. That sort of music should be reserved for personal enjoyment. The Mass is a prayer, not something to entertain us. We are at Calvary, not a concert.
