This taking down of confederate statues is so f... up in my view. If we need take down every sculpture or work of art of a regime/leader that had slavery, we should start destroying every sculpture of Thomas Jefferson, and then go on and burn down all the museums in the world that have any art prior to 1870s as the Met, the British Museum, the Louvre, the Hermotage, destroy all the temples of antiquity in the same way Isis has done it etc etc etc. Something very typical of the barbaric puritanism and hygienic world view of our current society is to judge the past exclusively with the eyes of the present, as if we were superior to our ancestors. It is so so narrow. The awareness towards victims and oppression is a gradual process in history, and it is very much the result of Christianity. Most certainly, many of these white left wing pundits, if they had lived in a confederate state in 1830s, they would have behaved and done exactly the same as all the white people living there.
