I have just been reading the information on this link which is a scientific appraisal of the evidence relating to the Shroud of Turin. Like most Catholics, I knew most of this but it is a fine summary and well worth reading. http://www.newgeology.us/presentation24.html View attachment 918
Dr. John Jackson who is mentioned in the article is a long time friend of mine. He was the lead Scientist in the 1970's when the shroud was first examined. He was there during the carbon dating and he has said it was the biggest sham to happen and believed by so many! The scientists involved did not use scientific methods, the experiments were sketchy, sloppy and secretive. The lead scientist was given an anonymous MILLION DOLLAR grant a year after the experiment was done. There were Protestants and Atheists in the group, which doesn't matter, but they were vocally against the shroud being authentic. If you are ever in Colo. spgs, Co. You should go to Dr. Jackson's Turin Shroud Center. He and his wife Rebecca are lovely people. She was born an Orthodox Jew and was an Ethnologist. She called Dr. Jackson and said to him, "I can prove that the man of the Shroud was a Jew." They met at a Denny's to discuss it and she worked with him for years and then she converted and they were married. She travels with him to the Turin Shroud Symposium in Rome every other year that they organized and speak at. They will come to your town and speak about the Shroud--Its fascinating!
I am very grateful to you SteveD for posting this article. Sadly the last i had read on the topic had been that the carbon dating had shown the Shroud to be the wrong date. It is great to read of this new scientific evidence. 1988 CARBON-14 TEST REFUTED Several studies have challenged the validity of the 1988 Carbon-14 tests done at Oxford, Zurich and Arizona Labs. 1. A Jan 20, 2005 paper in the professional journal ThermoChimica Acta by Dr. Ray Rogers, retired Fellow with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and lead chemist with the original science team STURP (the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project, involving approximately 35 scientists directly examining the Shroud for five days), has proven conclusively that the sample cut from The Shroud of Turin in 1988 was taken from an area of the cloth that was re-woven during the middle ages. Here are some excerpts: "Pyrolysis-mass-spectrometry results from the sample area coupled with microscopic and microchemical observations prove that the radiocarbon sample was not part of the original cloth of the Shroud of Turin. The radiocarbon date was thus not valid for determining the true age of the shroud." "The shroud was badly damaged in a church fire in 1532 AD. Nuns patched burn holes and stitched the shroud to a reinforcing cloth that is now known as the Holland cloth." This probably occurred in 1534. "As part of the shroud of turin research project (STURP), I took 32 adhesive-tape samples from all areas of the shroud and associated textiles in 1978." "It enabled direct chemical testing on recovered linen fibers and particulates". "If the shroud had been produced between 1260 and 1390 AD, as indicated by the radiocarbon analyses, lignin should be easy to detect. A linen produced in 1260 AD would have retained about 37% of its vanillin in 1978... The Holland cloth, and all other medieval linens gave the test [i.e. tested positive] for vanillin wherever lignin could be observed on growth nodes. The disappearance of all traces of vanillin from the lignin in the shroud indicates a much older age than the radiocarbon laboratories reported." "The fire of 1532 could not have greatly affected the vanillin content of lignin in all parts of the shroud equally. The thermal conductivity of linen is very low... therefore, the unscorched parts of the folded cloth could not have become very hot." "The cloth's center would not have heated at all in the time available. The rapid change in color from black to white at the margins of the scorches illustrates this fact." "Different amounts of vanillin would have been lost in different areas. No samples from any location on the shroud gave the vanillin test [i.e. tested positive]." "The lignin on shroud samples and on samples from the Dead Sea scrolls does not give the test [i.e. tests negative]." "Because the shroud and other very old linens do not give the vanillin test [i.e. test negative], the cloth must be quite old." "A determination of the kinetics of vanillin loss suggests that the shroud is between 1300- and 3000-years old. Even allowing for errors in the measurements and assumptions about storage conditions, the cloth is unlikely to be as young as 840 years." "A gum/dye/mordant [(for affixing dye)] coating is easy to observe on... radiocarbon [sample] yarns. No other part of the shroud shows such a coating." "The radiocarbon sample had been dyed. Dyeing was probably done intentionally on pristine replacement material to match the color of the older, sepia-colored cloth." "The dye found on the radiocarbon sample was not used in Europe before about 1291 AD and was not common until more than 100 years later." "Specifically, the color and distribution of the coating implies that repairs were made at an unknown time with foreign linen dyed to match the older original material." "The consequence of this conclusion is that the radiocarbon sample was not representative of the original cloth." "The combined evidence from chemical kinetics, analytical chemistry, cotton content, and pyrolysis-mass-spectrometry proves that the material from the radiocarbon area of the shroud is significantly different from that of the main cloth. The radiocarbon sample was thus not part of the original cloth and is invalid for determining the age of the shroud." "A significant amount of charred cellulose was removed during a restoration of the shroud in 2002." "A new radiocarbon analysis should be done on the charred material retained from the 2002 restoration." Raymond N. Rogers. 20 January 2005. Studies on the radiocarbon sample from the shroud of turin. Thermochimica Acta, Vol. 425, Issue 1-2, Pages 189-194. 2. The Fire-Model Tests of Dr. Dmitri Kouznetsov in 1994 and Drs. John Jackson and Propp in 1998, which replicated the famous Fire of 1532, demonstrate that the fire added carbon isotopes to the linen. 3. Dr. Leoncio Garza-Valdes (microbiologist) discovered a bioplastic coating of bacteria and fungus on the linen fibers (60% by weight) caused by living microbes that absorb and add C-14 to the Cloth and thereby skew the date by at least 1300 years. These microbes were not known at the time of the test and were not removed by the C-14 cleaning protocol. Pasted from <http://www.newgeology.us/presentation24.html>
I am not in the US or I would definitely get there. How was Rebecca able to prove that the body was that of a Jew? You seem to know all sorts of interesting people MS. How did you meet Dr. Jackson? I just read yesterday in a prominent paper that the Shroud had been proved to be a medieval fake, don't these journalists keep up to date?
Not if that is not their agenda to push. A lot of the first batch of scientists from 1988 actually disagreed with that carbon-14 result - I've read about it in early 90s. Though, unlike the first erroneous result, these corrections did not run the front pages of the "prominent papers". BTW if the paper is "prominent" that usually means that it is guilty of left-wing propaganda. At least here, in the US, though the same could be attributed to UK ones as well.
To tell the truth, I don't know how she did. Apparently there are certain 'traits' from specific tribes of Jews maybe? I never asked. I met Dr. Jackson when I lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a professor of Physics at the Air Force Academy, and used to (and still does) stand and pray at the abortion mill in CS. I used to also, and I helped start the Colo. MIR Center which brought in international speakers and published information regarding apparitions and a Newspaper. We organized the first Marian Peace Conference in the State of Colorado. Dr. Jackson used to come to talks we put on and if I remember right, they cut their honeymoon short to come to the Peace Conference! Beautiful, dedicated and focused people! There was an incredible event that happened in Colo. Spgs. one year I was there in the 90's. Dan Lynch had brought the Missionary Image of our Lady of Guadalupe that was traveling the Americas to Wichita, Kansas and their third trimester Abortion Mill. During the prayer on the sidewalk at the mill, ROSE PETALS FELL OUT OF THE IMAGE ONTO THE SIDEWALK! People were amazed collected them up and the abortion mill later closed its doors. Many were converted that day also! The image came then to BOULDER, CO. to their third trimester abortion mill and wept tears and would not quit weeping! We were asked where we could put the image that we could gather people for prayer and veneration for the night. Dr. Jackson came forward and offered his Turin Shroud Center and people from Pueblo, Denver and the Springs came together all night and venerated these two incredible gifts to humanity! The Image of the Shroud that he has IS THE NEGATIVE that was taken of the Shroud and is beautifully displayed over lights so you can see it perfectly, and the Image of our Lady stood next to it and continued to cry tears and by morning it had stopped. We felt like the earth had stood still as we were feeling so privileged and blessed to be a part of that moment! Dr. Jackson travels all over the place to give presentations on the shroud. He has been interviewed on EWTN many times.
Noted Accomplishments of TSC 1. Demonstration by using fold marks found on the Shroud that it once resided in Constantinople in the 10th-11th centuries at the latest (in opposition to the radiocarbon date of the Shroud at the 14th century). 2. Development of the hypothesis that only a 2% contamination by natural atmospheric carbon monoxide (which is highly enriched in radiocarbon) can cause a 1st Century Shroud to have a radiocarbon date of 14th century. 3. Demonstration that the Shroud has first century Jewish characteristics. 4. Development of the hypothesis that the Shroud was first used as the Tablecloth of the Last Supper. 5. Development of hypothesis that the Shroud image was formed by interaction with an underlying radiant body (Resurrection?) 6. Development of a program of educational opportunities for learning about the Shroud. 7. Establishment of the TSC website (www.shroudofturin.com). 8. Participation in the BBC documentary, Shroud of Turin: Material Evidence. 9. I think this is the couple I saw on EWTN years ago (when Mother Angelica was still on) and I remember them talking about the research into the Shroud being possibly the Last Supper tablecloth. I don't know if they were ever able to determine if this was fact or not but it is fascinating that the first celebration of the eucharist is connected (potentially) to the burial cloth! God Bless! And Happy Blessed Easter!
Yes! That is them. Through their testing, they found wine stains at approx. 13 places on the shroud surrounding the edges....! This was incredible and the fact that Jesus was crucified on the eve of the Sabbath didn't give them much time to 'get things together'. The Upper room was owned by Nicodemus or Lazarus--I forget, but one of them gave his own tomb for Jesus, and the other must have taken the tablecloth which is a perfect size. Not only through scientific study did Dr. Jackson find this out, but scripture and long hours in veneration in front of the shroud. He really has been divinely inspired. One of the things Dr. Jackson showed us during our last visit was the correlation between the 'BURSE'- the cloth envelope, covered with the same material as the Mass vestments, in which the corporal is carried to the altar. 'CORPORAL'- a square piece of linen upon which the chalice and host rest during the Mass. A small red cross of red thread in the center of the front fold shows where the host will lie. This Burse is like a 'cave' in which the 'cloth corporal' which holds the 'body and blood of Jesus' is put. THIS LINEN IS SIMILAR and SYMBOLIC TO THE SHROUD--and in scripture, which was today's Easter Sunday Scripture-- John 20: 1 - 9 1Now on the first day of the week Mary Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. "3Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. 4They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; 5and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, 7and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
Mothersuperior7, is there a link to answer the question somebody asked - how could Mrs.Jackson prove that the person was Jewish origin - this is very interesting
Johnette Benkovic did a series of shows on this subject lately on her programme Women of Grace (great show and great study programme too, by the way) which you can view on her website www.womenofgrace.com. Fascinating stuff, I highly recommend watching those shows!
No problemo. I remember that part of how they knew this was a Jewish burial was to do with the weave of the linen and particles of pollen that were found within the fibres of the cloth which were specific only to plants that grow in the region where Jesus lived. Absolutely fascinating what they were able to discover!
http://www.shroudofturin.com/ There is a lot of info here at this site. at 10:03 is an interview with Dr. Jackson and his wife with the BBC:
http://shroudstory.com/ Just wanted to add this link - there are some wonderful articles, interesting discussions and more updates on the Shroud
Shroud, new study: there is blood of a man tortured and killed Published in a US scientific journal new findings by Cnr and University of Padua. Electron Microscopy to analyze a pristine fiber: found creatinine and ferritin iron nanoparticles, typical in cases of severe polytrauma Pubblicato il 11/07/2017 ANDREA TORNIELLI ROME The Shroud of Turin, the linen cloth that according to an ancient tradition, wrapped the body of Jesus after crucifixion, actually came into contact with the blood of a dead man who suffered many serious injuries. This is what emerges from a research on a fabric fiber extracted from the dorsal imprint of the cloth, around the feet area. The study was conducted by two CNR institutes, the Istituto Officina dei Materiali (IOM-CNR) in Trieste and the Institute of Crystallography (IC-CNR) in Bari, together with the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padua, the latter uncovered the news with a statement. An article detailing the discovery findings and measurements was published in the American journal PlosOne and titled “New Biological Evidence from Atomic Resolution Studies on the Turin Shroud”. “We performed reproducible atomic resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and Wide Angle X-ray Scanning Microscopy experiments studying for the first time the nanoscale properties of a pristine fiber taken from the Turin Shroud,” explains Elvio Carlino of IC-CNR, who led the research. “In particular, experiments were performed in areas of the fiber away from red crusts visible by optical microscope. We performed an atomic resolution study on the fiber to study organic nanoparticles, according to a method recently developed in the center of Trieste that I directed until a few weeks ago. The study shows that the fiber is fully covered by creatinine nanoparticles, 20–100 nm (one nanometer equals one millionth of a millimeter), embedding small (2–6 nm) nanoparticles, made of defected ferrihydrite, typical of biologic ferritin cores.” According to Professor Giulio Fanti of the University of Padua, the analyses show how “the peculiar structure, size and distribution of the nanoparticles cannot be artifacts made over the centuries on the fabric of the Shroud.” Many fanciful reconstructions of the Turin Shroud being a painted object are once again denied.” Additionally, Fanti says, “the wide presence of creatinine particles bound to ferrihydrite particles is not a situation typical of the blood serum of a healthy human organism. Indeed, a high level of creatinine and ferritin is related to patients suffering of strong polytrauma like torture. Hence, the presence of these biological nanoparticles found during our experiments point a violent death for the man wrapped in the Turin shroud.” Image of the Shroud in which the imprint of the front and back of a human figure is visible. The yellow arrow on the right indicates the region from which the fiber object of the study published on PlosOne was extracted. This conclusion - states the research paper signed also by Liberato De Caro and Cinzia Giannini of IC-CNR, “is based on the experimental evidences of our atomic resolution studies and referring to recent medical studies on patients who suffered strong polytrauma and torture”. Carlino concludes, “The nanoparticles attached to the linen fibers have recorded a scenario of great suffering, whose victim was then wrapped up in the funeral cloth. These findings could only be revealed by the methods recently developed in the field of Electron Microscopy.” The result of the research, conducted by prestigious science centers, is of great interest and confirms the hypotheses advanced by previous investigations, such as those carried out by biochemist Alan Adler in the 1990s. There is no longer any doubt that the Shroud has wrapped the body of a man tortured and killed in the same manner as described in the Gospels for the Crucifixion of Jesus. An important element that will have to be taken into account next time the Holy See will authorize new examinations on official samples. Light microscopy image of the fibre studied in the work published on PlosOne. The arrows indicate some of the red particles on the surface of the fiber recognized as blood. TEM experiments were performed in areas of the fiber away from red crusts. http://www.lastampa.it/2017/07/11/v...and-killed-c1jdACNKkTlD9YBPS4kFXM/pagina.html
If you are interested, I am writing a book on three divine images given to mankind, one is the Shroud. I have recently finished a 35 year project on restoring the image of the shroud to find the true face of Jesus. To preface, I am a photo restoration specialist . . .Master of Photography Master Artist, Master Electronic Imaging, Photographic Craftsman I only give you this info to let you know I am experienced. I entered a before and after of my efforts in print competition to have my work juried by my peers and it received a blue ribbon, with a seal of approval and will be displayed next Jan. At The Professional Photographers of America International photo exhibition/convention held in Nashville. So thousands of people attending will see the Face Of Jesus. What really bothers me is when people see an image of the shroud they are looking at a photographic negative. I used the negative for reference but actually worked on a copy of the original photographed by Barrie Schwartz of the shroud team of the 1970's. (Yes he did give me permission to use his image). I also did much research to arrive at coloring etc. one person from this group was kind enough to assist me. I do hope to have the book ready for publication in a few months. Jesus wants to be seen! I saw this thread and just had to share. I am hoping to get my project blessed by my parish priest, have been trying to get him at my studio for a year, I am thinking he might not be interested. So I might approach our Bishop, but am being patient.
