Vatican surprised by bank's credit card block

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A senior Vatican official says he is "truly surprised" that the Bank of Italy ordered credit card payments suspended in the tiny city-state and insists the Vatican has taken adequate measures to fight money laundering.

The Vatican has been cash-only since Jan. 1 after Italy's central bank compelled Deutsche Bank Italia to stop providing electronic payment services to the Holy See. That has meant tourists visiting Vatican Museums — they numbered 5 million last year — and the Vatican post office have had to pay cash for tickets and any other transactions.

It's an inconvenience that, if left unchanged for long, could eventually affect the Vatican's bottom line, given the critical role museum revenues play in the Vatican City State's finances. For example, in 2011 museum revenues amounted to €91.3 million, helping the Vatican City State post a budget surplus of €21.8 million.

The Bank of Italy said in a statement this week it had no choice but to order the block because the Vatican has no banking regulatory framework or EU-recognized alternative for anti-money-laundering purposes. The bank said it realized, during a routine search, that Deutsche Bank had never obtained authorization to install the so-called POS (point-of-sales) machines in the Vatican and that "any other European supervisory authority would have behaved in the same way, in compliance with community law."

Visitors to the Vatican City can once more use their credit cards for purchases and ATM withdrawals, following the end of a six week ban over money laundering concerns.

On the 1 January the Bank of Italy suspended all card payments in the Vatican until further notice over a failure to implement anti-money laundering law.

Deutsche Bank Italia, which handled bank card payments in the city-state was ordered to deactivate terminals, forcing tourists and pilgrims to use cash.

According to Reuters, spokesman Father Federico Lombardi has confirmed that Swiss card payment specialist Aduno has now taken over processing. The Bank of Italy does not need to approve the arrangement because Aduno is based outside of the EU.

Cards are now being accepted again, enabling pilgrims flocking to the state in the wake of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation to pay for their souvenirs with plastic.

Did anyone notice that the second reading at Mass today (St. Paul to the Thessalonians) says, "... that we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one." If ever we needed to be guarded from the Evil One, it's this Election Day.

Please, Dear Merciful Jesus, shine the light and wisdom of Your Holy Spirit into enough hearts and minds that we may be delivered from the scourge that will be visited upon our beloved country if evil triumphs.

 

The pope has surrounded himself with people our Lady has warned us against. His absolute disregard for the unborn and unborn chopped-up for body parts is absolutely disgusting. The Holy Spirit does not guide everything he says. How is he standing up for them. He is great on social justice, but there is no social justice without life. He is just like OBama. I make no apologies.

When I start to believe that the world is so jaded that I doubt anything would surprise me, I get knocked off my feet by yet another devious revelation.

If the only justice that will be meted out on this earth is Jesus gabbing ahold of the planet and shaking it, then so be it.

 

I should apologize to Dolours because my post wasn't very clear, I was confused about her comment about the Holy Spirit. In all honesty, I am very concerned about what is going on and you might be correct MaryAnn. (Sorry Dolours)

I doubt that the headline is bogus, they would have to have him bound and gagged somewhere until after the election. But I wouldn't be surprised if she has a "life insurance file" (as Anthony Weiner describes it) on everybody, I mean anybody that has any influence on this election.

PS - Odd how both of those articles were written on the 13th of the month, I guess the second article is not so odd. Heaven is giving us so many signs.

I believe they will do anything to get / retain power. What an awful circle they run in. Our country is in so much trouble if she wins. This really forces that cop to come forward if what has been reported and what Andy heard is true. I hope so. I think we need one more big WikiLeaks dump for Trump to win.

Please God, may someone step forward with the goods if they got them...and then may God protect them and their families.
