I was just reading about St. Padre Pio.

Does anyone know if there are any priests alive today who have any of the spiritual gifts he had, such as the ability to read souls?

  2. Fr. Barone is supposed to have that gift, and some people flock to him because of it! Which I feel defeats the purpose!!

I am just curious because with how bad our current times are, it seems like God would send us priests like that, but maybe not.

I do not need that myself, I was just wondering how rare it is, I guess, if there are even any in the world today like that.

Actually, Padraig, can you just delete this thread, please? I thought we could talk about something else other than the Pope or politics, but some people want to fight about everything, and I am tired of it.

No, its a great thread, just starting to get bitter...sorry. I just need to take a break and move on. Reading hearts is a wonderful gift.

Heidi, do you want to keep it or have it deleted. I can delete it if you like but I personally like the topic and would love to have a Padre Pio type situation in the confessional. Let the skeletons come out I say. There could be stuff deep down in there from my past that I have not thought about in needed to be confessed.

I would LOVE to have someone in our lifetime with such a gift! How awesome to go into the confessional like a wide eyed doe thinking your just going to say the usual yada yada yada and be scolded into reality about the truth of your life. Painful yes but then you could truly move forward and grow spiritually into the soul God always wanted you to be. I imagine that God probably intended more than 1 saint that never got the chance to be born. Just as we probably would have had many great leaders were it no for one of the greatest sins in our lifetime.

    God Bless!

I think it would be scarily wonderful to meet a priest like this. I think many people (or maybe just me) could use a priest with this gift. I *think* I know myself and my sins. But, then I realize as I learn more that there was more to what I was doing/not doing, or I just plain hid something from myself, or I did something without giving it a moment's though not realizing the impact of what I did. To be called to account for it would definitely make me wiser and more conscious of my sins going forward. I suppose that's what the "warning" is all about?

I don't know if there are any priests like this today, but it won't be long now till the high priest, our Lord Jesus will reveal our sin's to us in full at the Warning. I have thought allot about this and while there is some uneasiness, I am looking for this moment so I can repent completely of forgotten sins and enter more deeply into his sacred heart.

Thank you for starting the thread Heidi. I too am interested in hearing more about this. I don't have much experience in the confessional (only twice so far), so I do enjoy hearing other peoples views and thought on things like these.

I would love a soul reading priest who would be honest about my failings and hidden motivations so they could be rooted out and my love for God could grow by leaps and bounds.

Same here Peppermill. Whenever I get complacent and think everything is done and dusted I'm reminded of some past sin that I had brushed aside. The memory hits me like a bolt from the blue. I'm unsure whether I should bring up these sins in confession because I always understood that forgotten sins were forgiven when we make a good confession. I did try once to raise the matter of past sins in Confession but the priest dismissed it, saying something about scrupulosity. I'm the least scrupulous person I know. Now, I'm trusting that all those old forgotten sins were wiped away at Confession on Divine Mercy Sunday.

have you ever done a general confession? i wrote down a letter to The Lord once and went into the confessional and asked permission to read it. it was rather long and i think the priest was a bit irritated. i would suggest you set something like that up in advance and dont do what i did.

I did a general confession a few years ago before mercy Sunday. I made an appointment with the priest and it was about a half hour long. I felt the restraining hand of the Lord over my heart until the end of mass on Sunday, probably to keep me from losing any graces. The joy I felt on mercy Sunday was utterly amazing.
