I do not expect the anti-Christ in person. I am in the Yves Dupont school that the anti-Christ comes after the period of peace. The Gospel, too, seems to confirm that there will be two different periods: the beginning of the end, and the end proper, with an intervening respite. The anti-Christ comes at the end of the world the Greater Tribulations. But I am only expressing a personal opinion.
It could be as you say, but the 'two periods' or 'two tribulations' could be pre-Warning and post-Warning. It surely makes sense that if Jesus gives a 'miniature judgement' to everyone one alive on earth at the same time, then there is only two choices after this point; the One true Church or the one apostate Church, which will be ripe for the Antichrist to manifest himself. Another thing for sure, is the one last indicator from Christ's account of the times in the Gospel is the great apostasy, which we are surely in. Is there any word in scripture about two great apostasies, the last one being a the end of the world?
I don't know if he mentions the length of the period of peace but one would imagine that it would be at least one generation. But there are different interpretations of what the 'period of peace' means.
Scripture speaks only of the Great Apostacy. You are sure we are in it at present. But --- There is still faith, there is still a remnant. There may well be a time in the future when things are worse, much worse. Our Blessed Lord indicated this Himself. 'When the Son of Man returns shall he find faith on the earth'?
I believe the Church will become very small as Cardinal Ratzinger foretold. There will always be a remnant of believers or the world would cease to exist. Yes, there are many who still claim to be Christian, but many stopped going to Church and stopped seeking the truth. These lukewarm Catholics and apostate Protestants will deny the faith totally once the tribulation begins in their area, because it lacks foundation. I fear at this point there is very - very few practicing Catholics and Christians in the world, which hold to all the Church has taught in the area of faith and morals. This is the reason I see the great apostasy taking place at this moment. It fits scripture. It fits the moment where the Antichrist can do the most damage.

I completely agree. I don't think we have to wait for the great apostasy and the Church to become very small. Both have already happened. We jokingly say "where can you find the most catholics on Sunday"? Answer is at the local feel good non-denominational mega church which is where many catholics who didn't like this or that about Truth have fled to be preached to by the mega church pastor (who regularly attacks the Catholic Faith in his sermons).
Where can you find most Christians on Sunday? Worshiping the false god of entertainment. They might swing by the church, but entertainment is the real god. The creator of the universe is about to topple every false god - that's really what this storm is all about.
I live in a fairly conservative/moderate area and a moderate to progressive Church. What I know is our faith formation in both our homilies and youth formation is at best completely void of foundation in teaching and practicing the Catholic faith. They are good people and clergy, but are heavy into social justice and moderate as it pertains doctrine to the point that I don't think they even know the hard truths of the faith. The orthodox faith, anywhere around here, is but a faint recollection to the older generation and completely oblivious to anyone under 50. If this is not the fertile ground for the Antichrist then I don't know what it will take. The great Warning will wake some up from their stupor, but who will teach them what they failed to understand? I know so few who can, even though they are good people. A cluless world we have become in the one true faith.
Just to throw out an idea. If our world and many Catholics are not sure of the truth, we have to start at the beginning. This is the warning. The truth about who we are and who God is. Many do not even know themselves as God created them. With over 7 billion people in the world, the number who know God's truth is small. Thus we start over. These times are similar to the first Pentecost. Once again, mankind is going back to pagan ideas and God will warn us and we will have a new era in our collective history. We as humans have such warped views of Jesus. I think that is why the warning has been described as a vision of Christ on the cross. This is the starting point of our salvation. Once people understand this concept, the rest of the truth can be considered. But if you do not even comprehend Jesus and his mission, the rest of Christian doctrine is a moot point to a person. Paul said he preaches the simplicity of the gospel, Jesus cruficied. Why? Because his audience was pagan and similar to our audience today.

The one significant difference with our generation of apathetic people is, most have been given to know the truth, but have dumbed it down through relativism. Those in Christ's time were either afraid of loosing their Jewish faith or were completely faithless. But either way, it is going to take a manifestation from God to return. I see no other way.
