Padraig, the Pope is the Churchs Supreme law giver. not Canon Law. St JP2 revised the code from Pope St PiusX,if canon law is Supreme over the Pontiff then I guess no changes could ever be made. Like the 10 Commandments. Im talking canon law alone...separate of this latest arguement
Just as the President of the United States lies under the Laws of the Untited States. He is not above the Laws just as the citizens of the United States are not above those laws. The Pope is subject to Church Law untill those laws are changed. If a President or Pope is in breach of those Laws they commit a Criminal Act otherwise what is the point of having Laws? If popes are the Supreme Law Giver then surely they should be the very first to respect and obey the laws they give? They can change the Law, but until the Law is changed surely they should obey them, as they expect everyone else too? If the President wants to change the law he can work to do so. If a Pope does not obey Church Laws why should we? Why should he not simply change them? Is he making and breaking on the hoof? What example is that? That he the Head of the Church breaks Church Laws as he likes?..and because he in a press interview decides to break them they no longer exist? If he , on a whim , can make and unmake laws , deciding they do no longer apply to him of anyone else, what is the Law? Does it exist at all? To be blown away in the winds of a sound bite?
What is more to adivse our Protestant sisters and brothers that Church Law does not apply to them if they have the 'feeling' , 'From Jesus', that Church Law does not apply to them? Sounds to me like a Southern Baptist Minister rather than the Roman Pontiff.
The contexts (and I use the plural advisedly) you embrace are too broad and disparate. I used the word "definitive" in my post that you replied to because this is what a heretical declaration has to be. In order for Pope Francis to be heretical he will have to define it with unambiguous authority, not hint at it or stumble into it accidentally. He does give the impression that he knows how far he can go by actually going there and no further. Not that he is not doing great harm with his brinkmanship, but it is not heresy and so he remains the legitimate Pope who commands the loyalty of all Catholics.
I should really have been more precise and said that Canon Laws are similar to the Jewish precepts which sought to regulate behaviour. Jesus generally kept to these laws but not always. Pope Francis has not said canon laws should be ignored. He has pointed to God's Word perhaps being more important in this particular case.
If I were the devil and I had the Pope by the legs the very last thing I would ever do is to declare my hand and have that Pope Pope openly declare false Doctrine. No, what I would do, if I were Satan and I were clever is have the Pope change things by the back door of sound bites. I would have the Pope having off the cuff comments and ringing atheist reporters at all hours giving them my deniable speil. Sound familiar?

If it was unscriptural, and approved by some off the rail Pope such as Pope St John Paul 2, rather than breaking it? Not exactly. The Pope has changed nothing. The fear of change is what is governing this thread right now. I repeat, the Pope has changed nothing. Zip. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Here is another scenario - if I were the bad guy, I would try to find ways to get faithful Catholics to lose their trust in legitimate authority and, if possible, to get them to start throwing barbs at that legitimate authority and maybe, just maybe, get them to break away (or cause others to break away or stay away). I would try to convince them that the guy in charge was getting ready to make big changes - I would have my demons whisper in their ears incessently. After all, it worked on some faithful Catholics after Vatican II, why not now? Look - I am not saying there are not points for concern here, what I am saying is that now is not the time to make rash judgments and proclamations regarding the Vicar of Christ. We all know that challenging times are ahead of us. Let's allow the chosen Captain to pilot the ship. Or, put another way, let's allow the chosen Shepherd to lead the flock.
