I am so sad and discouraged. This would be my 9th Furst Friday but I am totally snowed in. There is another Mass at 5:30 tonight. Hoping and praying to be dug out by then. Really hoping to make it tomorrow!!!:(

I will pray for you to be able to make it to Mass. I am leaving now. :)

If you cannot make it because of the weather, just know that your DESIRE is what God wants. It's His Divine Will. Just say, "Jesus, I abandon myself to you. You take care of everything!"
    God bless you.

I was so pleased to see such a good turnout for First Friday Mass this morning at my Church! Sadly, First Saturday Rosary is usually only attended by a handful of us Legion of Mary members.

Yes, it was the same at my Parish and unfortunately it is the same for First Saturday. I do not understand why it is not spoken of to the faithful when First Fridays are mentioned in our bulletin and also at Mass.

Some short meditations from past First Saturdays. Remember to meditate keeping Our Blessed Mother company for 15 minutes.

“…and She laid him in a manger because there was no room for them at the Inn” Luke 2:7

I pray to become empty – for my heart to become an empty space as the cave in which Jesus was born, and not to be full, as the Inn which had no room. I pray to you my Mother, to place Jesus in my heart as you placed Him in the manger so that His glorious Light will inflame my poor heart, burning away all the impurities and all that which is not of God, filling the darkness of my soul with His Light. May all be drawn to His Light as the Shepherd’s were drawn to the cave of His birth. My Jesus, I pray that you will rest here in my heart where I will warm you with the warmth of Your very Love and form within me the empty space in which you will place the Celestial Gift of the Divine Will. Amen

I was meditating on the Finding of Jesus in the Temple and the suffering of Mother Mary as She searched for three days for Her Jesus, and I thought about myself when I sometimes do not feel His presence. How miserable I become!~ I again thought about Our Lady and St. Joseph going in search of Jesus, and He said to me, “I did not leave them!” I received light to understand that Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, but He did not go off leaving them – it was they who left Him. I knew that He was making me understand that it is never He who leaves us, but us who leave Him. And where is it that we will find Him? - in the Temple (the Church) and in the Temple of our hearts where He dwells.

A few days after this, I picked up the Book of Heaven, Vol. 17, pg. 73, and read, “I do not leave you – no, no. This is an accusation you make against your Jesus. I never leave anyone! The creatures withdraw from Me, not I from them. Rather, I go behind them and next to them.”

    Meditation on the Resurrection:

I thought about Jesus’ words to Mary Magdalene, “Do not touch Me for I have not yet ascended to My Father.” How holy and pure we must be before we touch our dear Lord. How many are the impure hands that touch Him each day when receiving Him in the Eucharist! How many the impure hearts into which He descends each day!

    I remembered! :)
The turnout was actually not bad. About what I remember we had during the Our Lady of Fatima anniversary First Saturdays. This was great to see because they really dropped off for a while.
AED, I hope you made it. We all know how much you wanted to be there. :)

Well, we had a pretty good turnout for the Mass, but as usual, the Legion of Mary stayed to pray the Rosary while almost everyone else left. I'm hoping some of them prayed it at home.

Thankyou Don. I made it to first Saturday and made a Holy Hour afterward so very happy about that. First Friday I fAiled the test. :( It was 20 below and I live quite a bit out of town and Mass was at 5:30 so pretty dark by then. I am afraid I chickened out. I will start again in February. Sigh.

I am so sorry AED :(
That is hard, especially on the last one!
Our Lord makes us work for it though.
There are so many amazing promises connected with these devotions. This is not cheap Grace.
That is why everyone should start now!
Many people think they will just zip through them, but I have heard from so many that they have to try several (sometimes many) times to get them done.

Yes you are right but I have completed the 9 Friday’s at least 3 times in the past so I must just start over and hope the earlier graces still apply. . The 5 First Saturday’s are much easier. Thank you Mother Mary!!

First Friday and Saturday coming up this weekend. I found an article I liked that speaks to it and the promises made to those who take part in it. It is a wonderful devotion.

What Are the First Friday and First Saturday Devotions?

March 3, 2016 By Gretchen Filz 48 Comments

Have you ever heard the terms “First Friday” and “First Saturday” thrown around in Catholic circles, without knowing why there was something special about these particular days at the start of each month?

The First Friday devotion and the First Saturday devotion are both reparatory devotions in the Catholic Church that arose from separate private revelations. The First Friday devotion is associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, while the First Saturday devotion is associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Incidentally, these are two of the most widely popular devotions to Jesus and Mary.

Both devotions involve receiving Holy Communion on a certain number of consecutive first Fridays or first Saturdays of the month. You can think of it almost like a novena which is prayed on consecutive days for a particular intention, but instead, these devotions are performed on consecutive months for the particular intention of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, respectively.

The devotions are similar in that they call on the faithful to “stand in the gap” by doing penance for sinners, and both give a special promise of Divine assistance at the hour of death, that is, the promise of dying in a state of grace and therefore obtaining heaven.

    FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION
Nine consecutive Fridays in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque (1647-1690), a French nun in the Visitation Order, and gave her the special task to spread devotion to His Most Sacred Heart at a time when religion was growing cold in the hearts of mankind.

    He said to her:

“Behold this heart which, not withstanding the burning love for men with which it is consumed and exhausted, meets with no other return from most Christians than sacrilege, contempt, indifference and ingratitude, even in the sacrament of my love [the Eucharist]. But what pierces my heart most deeply is that I am subjected to these insults by persons especially consecrated to my service.”

Jesus asked for special prayers and practices to make amends (reparation) for this great neglect to the proper reverence owed to God. For those who did this faithfully, he made what St. Margaret Mary referred to as the “Great Promise” which was the last and greatest of the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“I promise you in the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those who receive communion on nine successive first Fridays of the month; they will not die in my disfavor [the grace of final repentance], or without having received the sacraments, since my divine heart will be their sure refuge in the last moments of their life.”

CONDITIONS TO FULFILL THE FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION
The specific conditions to receive the Great Promise of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are:

    1. Receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive first Fridays of the month (this assumes that the person is in a state of grace, having made a sacramental confession for any mortal sins prior to receiving communion).

    2. Having the intention, at least implicitly, of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for all the sinfulness and ingratitude of men.

    FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION
Five consecutive Saturdays in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The practice of the First Saturday devotion was requested by Our Lady of Fatima, who appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, multiple times starting in 1917.

She said to Lucia, the oldest of the three children:

“I shall come to ask . . . that on the First Saturday of every month, Communions of reparation be made in atonement for the sins of the world.”

Years later she repeated her request to Sr. Lucia, the only one still living of the three young Fatima seers, while she was a postulant sister living in a convent in Spain:

“Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me at very moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me, and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the rosary, and keep me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the 15 mysteries of the rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

CONDITIONS TO FULFILL THE FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION
There are five requirements to obtain this promise from the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On five consecutive first Saturdays of the month, one should:

    1. Have the intention of consoling the Immaculate Heart in a spirit of reparation.

    2. Go to confession (within eight days before or after the first Saturday).

    3. Receive Holy Communion.

    4. Say five decades of the Holy Rosary.

    5. Meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary with the goal of keeping Our Lady company (for example, while in church or before an image or statue of Our Lady).

Read How to Make Your First Saturday Rosary Meditation According to Sr. Lucia

    WHY FIVE SATURDAYS?
Our Lord appeared to Sr. Lucia on May 29, 1930 and gave her the reason behind the five Saturdays devotion. It is because there are five types of offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

    1. Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception

    2. Blasphemies against Our Lady’s perpetual virginity

    3. Blasphemies against her divine maternity, in refusing at the same time to recognize her as the Mother of men

    4. Blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children, indifference or scorn or even hatred of their Immaculate Mother

    5. Offenses of those who outrage Our Lady directly in her holy images

Never think that Jesus is indifferent to whether or not His mother is honored!

    GREATER DIFFICULTY, GREATER REWARD
While keeping up with these devotions over five or nine consecutive months is not easy, the reward for making the effort is eternal. Look again at those promises from Jesus and Mary!

Nothing in this life is more important than holy religion (living according to the will of God as revealed through his Church), offering yourself to God as a self-gift for the benefit of others (Christ-like reparation for the sins of others), and obtaining salvation through Jesus Christ (joining the saints in heaven for all eternity). So, resolve to make the effort to do one or the other (or both!) of these devotions, and pray for the grace to follow through to the end. God always gives the grace to those who wish to faithfully accomplish his requests!
