(NaturalNews) The Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, but under the stewardship of President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB agent, a new cold war between Russia and the United States appears to be forming. At least, it's cold for now.

Over the past 30 months, Russian strategic (read nuclear) forces have begun testing U.S. defenses on a much more regular basis. The most recent attempt occurred just days ago when a pair of Russian strategic bombers practiced cruise missile attacks on the U.S. during a training mission -- a mission that U.S. officials said was timed to coincide with a NATO summit in Wales aimed at developing a plan to blunt Russia's aggression toward Ukraine.

American and Canadian systems picked up and tracked the aged Tu-95 "Bear-H" bombers flying a line across the northern Atlantic Ocean "near Iceland, Greenland, and Canada's northeast," the Free Beacon news site reported, adding:

Analysis of the flight indicated the aircraft were conducting practice runs to a pre-determined "launch box"--an optimum point for firing nuclear-armed cruise missiles at U.S. targets, said defense officials familiar with intelligence reports.

Testing of U.S. defenses have been increasing

The disclosure of the latest Russian nuclear forces training came amid a call by a Russian general the prior week for Moscow to adjust its military doctrine to include a first-strike option against the U.S. and NATO.

"Gen. Yuri Yakubov, a senior Defense Ministry official, was quoted by the state-run Interfax news agency as saying that Russia's 2010 military doctrine should be revised to identify the United States and the NATO alliance as enemies, and clearly outline the conditions for a preemptive nuclear strike against them," the Free Beacon reported.

Among other necessary doctrinal changes, Yakubov said, "it is necessary to hash out the conditions under which Russia could carry out a preemptive strike with the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces," which are the Russian army's nuclear forces.

The recent practice launch runs are just the latest in a string of such missions that involve aggressive Russian bomber flights near U.S. airspace. The Free Beacon said a number of analysts believe that the flights amount to nuclear saber-rattling by Moscow over escalating tensions surrounding Ukraine.

No U.S. or Canadian interceptors were launched against the Bear-H bombers because the Russian planes remained outside the North American Air Defense Identification Zone. However, not all missions in recent months have done so; U.S. and allied aircraft have scrambled often since 2011 in response to Russian aircraft.

At the NATO summit, officials issued a statement that criticized "Russia's aggressive actions against Ukraine [which] have fundamentally challenged our vision of a Europe whole, free, and at peace."

Russia upgrading its nuclear forces

The Tu-95 is a dual-turboprop bomber that first entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1956. Like its American jet-powered counterpart, the B-52, the Bear has undergone a number of upgrades and revisions since it was first introduced. Its most modern version is designed to carry six AS-15 nuclear-armed cruise missiles, which have a range of more than 1,800 miles.

"Google Earth analysis reveals that a Tu-95 launch box located in the Labrador Sea and firing AS-15 missiles would be in range of Ottawa, New York, Washington, and Chicago, and could reach as far south as the Norfolk Naval base," the Free Beacon reported.

Other Russian moves regarding its nuclear force in recent months include:

-- Moscow is developing new nuclear weapons to counter the U.S. and NATO. According to the New York Post, Russia recently tested a new sea-based weapon that was launched from a submarine. "We have warned many times that we would have to take corresponding countermeasures to ensure our security," Putin told a gathering of officials at the Kremlin, adding that he was now going to take personal charge of the government commission overseeing military industries.

-- In early August, the Free Beacon reported that Russian aircraft had tested U.S. air defenses at least 16 times in the previous 10 days.

-- In 2012, Interfax reported that Russia had tested a new fifth-generation intercontinental ballistic missile designed to counter U.S. anti-missile defenses.

Meanwhile, there have been no reports that U.S. aircraft have been testing Russian air defense forces.

I agree Padraig. The Russian armed forces, unlike the West, now routinely run massive war tests which end up with a Western capital being nuked (their "Zapad" war games). Obama talks submissively and naively about ridding the US of nuclear weapons, while Putin routinely sends his bombers and jets speeding towards the borders of various western democracies to check out the weaknesses of their defences against Russian nuclear and conventional attack (and this was way before the Ukrainian crisis too).

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, whom Putin has sent as a spokesperson on behalf of Russia to places recently annexed by Russia like Crimea and who has been the vice-speaker of the Russian Duma with Putin's full support can exclaim without condemnation but humor from Putin that:

Russian analyst Piontkovsky has recently published an article arguing, along lines that repeat Zhirinovsky’s threats, that Putin really is pondering the possibility of limited nuclear strikes (perhaps against one of the Baltic capitals or a Polish city) to prove that NATO is a weak and worthless entity that won’t dare strike back for fear of a greater catastrophe, as covered in Paul Goble's blog on Russia::

I remember reading Mike that during the Cold War orders were issued on several occasions to officers on both sides to fire their nukes but again and gain they simply refused, on grounds of conscience. This of course w2as a miracle of grace , part of which , I am sure, would have been a clear warning from their Guardian Angel to these gentlemen that if they launched these things they would be going straight to hell.

I was imagining if I was walking up the street and someone ran across the road and threw a punch at my face, only stopping inches away, what a violent nasty thing that would be. This was a billion, billion times worse.

I was reading a Catholic blogger just the other day about how holy Putin is and how religious Russia is becoming, it just made me feel so sad and ..well...baffled. What was he thinking?

Members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church are fleeing Crimea to escape threats of arrest and property seizures, a priest has said.


“The situation remains very serious, and we don’t know what will happen — the new government here is portraying us all as nationalists and extremists,” said Father Mykhailo Milchakovskyi, a parish rector and military chaplain from Kerch, Crimea, who was speaking to the Catholic News Service just four days after Russia finalised the region’s annexation.


He said that officials from Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, had called him in for questioning about his community and to ask whether he “recognised the new order.”


Father Milchakovskyi said that he and his family and at least two-thirds of his parishioners had left Kerch for Ukrainian-controlled territory on the advice of Ukrainian Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kiev-Halych.


“All my parishioners are patriotic Ukrainians who love their Crimean homeland. But Russia is now seeking to drive us out,” he said on Tuesday.


He said Father Mykola Kvych, pastor of the Dormition of the Mother of God Parish in Sevastopol, Crimea, also fled after being detained and beaten by Russian forces, who accused him of “sponsoring extremism and mass unrest.”


“During 10 years in Sevastopol, he never said or did anything against Russians,” Father Milchakovskyi added.


“We’re determined our Church will not close up and abandon its mission, and we hope we’ll be given permits to return. But like others, we’ve had to leave our life and work behind, not knowing when we’ll be back. This is a time of suffering and anxiety.


“For now, this is just a temporary evacuation until conditions are safer, but with tension and pressure now strong, many of us are afraid of being arrested. People want things to stay as they are, with freedom of religion, assembly and speech. But if they’re forced to accept Russian passports, they’ll have little choice. Our only hope lies with God and human goodwill.”


The Ukrainian Catholic Church, a Byzantine rite, was outlawed under Soviet rule from 1946 to 1989, when many clergy were imprisoned and most church properties seized by the state or transferred to Russian Orthodox possession.


The Church’s five communities in Crimea traditionally make up around 10 percent of the peninsula’s 1.96 million inhabitants, 58 percent of whom are ethnic Russians. Ukrainians make up 24 percent and mostly Muslim Tartars a further 12 percent.


Father Milchakovskyi said that Crimea’s Russian Orthodox Church appeared ready to seize Ukrainian Catholic properties and said all but one Catholic priest and deacon had now left to escape “interest from the FSB and Russian forces.”


In a March 19 letter to Ukrainian Catholic clergy in Crimea and neighbouring Odessa, Archbishop Shevchuk said he was aware many priests now faced “inconveniences, pressures and threats” with their families, adding that he hoped they would have “bravery and courage, steadfastness and strength” to continue their work.


“To carry on your service, you will have to overcome impediments which, until very recently, were hard for any of us to imagine. You are being called ‘Vatican agents’ and are being solicited to renounce the Catholic Church,” the archbishop said.


“These attacks are nothing new. In them we trace an echo of everything our martyr-Church experienced in the not-so-distant Communist past,” he said. “However, we know God’s providence turned into good those repressions and persecutions.”


Meanwhile, Ukrainian newspapers said two Byzantine Catholic churches and a monastery had been burned between March 15 and 26 in Ivano-Frankivsk, Dora and Kolomyya, adding that the current crisis could severely damage Catholic-Orthodox ties.


Father Milchakovskyi said he hoped Russian Orthodox leaders would be “interested in maintaining religious freedom” in Crimea, but added that Ukrainian Catholics now had “no wish for contacts with them.”


“We don’t trust them — they’re unfriendly, imperialistic people, who are being helped by the FSB and who’ll want the new order to ensure their religious monopoly,” the priest said.


Father Milchakovskyi said he had spoken by telephone on Tuesday to Ukrainian soldiers previously under his spiritual care, who had been forced to surrender their uniforms and insignia after evacuating their base at Kerch.


He added that most were unsure whether they would be “treated as heroes or put on trial as deserters and traitors” after returning to the Ukrainian mainland.


Archbishop Shevchuk has asked priests to dedicate Ukraine to Mary’s protection on April 6, to help calm “hearts filled with anxiety for the future.”

I guess it's really all about whether the consecration was done or not. We have to believe in redemption/conversion. I am reminded of a person who hunted down and killed the early Christians in the church, his name was Saul and now it is St Paul. I am also reminded of a jewish king who stole his best general's wife, impregnated her, and sent the general off to be killed in a war. His name , David. The behavior of both was pure evil, but now we celebrate them as saints.

 

picadillo, I think you struggle with wanting Putin to be a changed person, a recovering evil man at this point, but the reality of the truth is that he is still a man with a mission of domination. Yes, Russia will be converted, but it hasn't happened yet and it won't happen until the Fatima prophecies are fullfilled "Russia will annihilate countries, the good will be martyered and the Holy Father will have much to suffer". We know from other credible saints and mystics that Russia will march into even the Vatican. I am with you though on the desire to see Russia converted and that they will be, but lets not put the cart in front of the horse on this one.

 

I would argue that still seeing Russia as the main evil in the world becuase the consecration may not have been done is off the mark. What Mary was talking about wasn't just Russia but communism coming from Russia. It has spread throughout the world already. There is no longer a good guy/bad guy in this as far as nations go IMO. Also the prophacy did not say Russia will annihilate countries but countries will be annihilated through the spread of communism. Russia marching on the Vatican? I'd like to see a credible source for this.

I'm sorry but these are not infallible, do you believe everything that is purported to be said by the Blessed Virgin is going to play out exactly as the seer states? There was not one, that I know of, prophesy by Our Lady of the pedophile scandal that has rocked the church, why not? Prayer can change events , can't they? I agree the consecration has not been done as originally asked, but God's ways are not our ways and who can say for sure if God has/has not accepted it.

 

Ofcourse they are not infallible as they are not related to Church doctine (faith and morals). They are however credible prophecies coming from a great mystic/saint/stigmatic, all great attributes of the saint.

 

Fatima thanks for taking the time to post this. I have read that fatima message numerous times. I think the big picture of world events would argue that the errors (meaning communism) are, if not yet fully, well underway to being spread throughout the world. These communistic idiologies are clearly at work in Western nations like the U.S. and Canada. I would argue there is as much freedom (including religious) in Russia today as there is in the USA. I think the consecration to the world in 1984 did have a great effect but clearly wasn't fully what Mary asked for. The US media is a propaganda machine spinning Russia as this great evil and I don't buy it for a second. There just isn't any evidence of this at all. If any country is on it's was to dominate the whole world at this point.....it's the U.S.. They have moved right to Russia's back door and somehow that is OK?? It would be like Russia having bases by the hundreds around the U.S. and E.U. If this happens I'll take notice but protecting Russian resources like gas lines running through Ukraine makes sence to me. The U.S. has admitted to spending $5 billion to create havoc in Ukraine, right on Russia doorstep. Somehow this is ok? If Russia spent 5 billion in Mexico then started arming Mexicans against the US agressors trying to stop this would this be ok?

If one just looks at current events one sees the Russian incursion upon the West, beginning with the West leaning sovereign Ukraine whose former Russian puppet president refused the people's desire for an EU association which they felt would give them more security against Putin's plans to pursue their takeover again. Germany and France have recently made their own deals to show Putin that they will be no threat to his plans for the new Russian empire and beyond. The EU is dependent upon Putin for their energy which we could help with ourselves if our current govt. regime did not block, once again, our assisting the free future of our once allies. So this open truce with the aggressor only enables his ongoing movement into Europe, which, by the way, also includes a pretty helpless Italy (Rome?, Vatican?). Within the month Putin has also announced his interest in the Arctic as well and that has the Canadians on the watch, at least hopefully. Prophecy fulfilled? Up to those whose eyes are not closed.

Our military both in number and $$$ has been reduced to a point of even before WWII....and at a time of the greatest aggression aimed at us and actually moving in that direction now. Why in the world are we seen as the most feckless govt. in the world due to the wussie stances of the current regime all but handing us over to the enemy? Any reduced military bases we have elsewhere we have because we're wanted to defend the allies who have always depended upon us for their security and we have their permission. NATO is today also feckless....not united, economically unstable, and the mentioned countries that are seen as historically the strongest within the EU have made a truce with Putin as mentioned above. For crying out loud this division of NATO, its falling apart, is why Putin is even being as aggressive as he is now. One of the first things Obama did, and for no reason and without getting anything in return from the Russian Commies, was to deny Poland and the Czechs (our allies) their promised missile defense systems that wouldn't leave them as they are now....sitting ducks for this Russian renewed hegemony for the recreation of the old Russian Empire and beyond. Please, please get the facts of reality as they stand today.
