I don't think they can be guarding Moses' tomb because nobody knows precisely where he was buried. Deuteronomy says that "he was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; to this day no one knows the place of his burial". I just assumed that being buried in a valley wouldn't mean on top of a mountain although I remember reading somewhere that one of the Jewish holy books has him buried on top or near the top of Mount Nebo. Maybe the monastery is built near the peak for the best view of the promised land?

I'm fairly sure that this is the Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist featured on the EWTN programme I saw (only saw part of the programme) when they said that John was beheaded in Jordan . The church is in Madaba but according to Flavius Josephus, the Jewish historian, John the Baptist was beheaded at the fortress of Machaerus which was built by Herod the Great. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beheading_of_St_John_the_Baptist This is all that's left of the fortress in Machaerus https://www.tripadvisor.ie/ShowUser...3111-Machaerus-Madaba_Madaba_Governorate.html

I'm surprised that with all the new technology there hasn't been an inch-by-inch examination of Mount Nebo in search of the Ark.

Anyway, sorry for taking the thread off topic, and thanks, Muzhik, for your patience and sharing your knowledge with us.

The way I look on it, cultural marxism has become so ingrained and dominant in politics and media (and Reuters would be a perfect example of the latter) that all so-called conventional conservative parties are now on the left of the spectrum and almost any party described as 'far-right' is really on the centre. The labels are an attempt by the establishment to distort and smear. Many people are coming to see through this.

For two millennia, great artists set the standard for beauty. Now those standards are gone. Modern art is a competition between the ugly and the twisted; the most shocking wins. What happened? How did the beautiful come to be reviled and bad taste come to be celebrated? Renowned artist Robert Florczak explains the history and the mystery behind this change and how it can be stopped and even reversed.

  6. Microwave weapon could fry North Korean missile controls, say experts

The U.S. has microwave weapons that proponents believe could stop North Korea from launching missiles by frying their electronics.

The weapons were discussed at an August White House meeting related to North Korea, according to two U.S. officials with direct knowledge.

The microwave weapons, known as CHAMPs, are fitted into an air-launched cruise missile and delivered from B-52 bombers. With a range of 700 miles, they can fly into enemy airspace at low altitude and emit sharp pulses of microwave energy to disable electronic systems.

"These high-powered microwave signals are very effective at disrupting and possibly disabling electronic circuits," said Mary Lou Robinson, who heads development of the weapons at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque, in an exclusive interview with NBC News.

Advocates say they could be used to stop North Korea from launching missiles by targeting the ground controls and the circuitry in the missiles themselves.

Ventura County wildfire rages over 45,500 acres, destroys more than 150 structures; 27,000 flee

Explosive wildfires in Southern California force tens of thousands to evacuate
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/12/0...ifornia-force-tens-thousands-to-evacuate.html

At least three wind-whipped wildfires exploded early Tuesday in Southern California, forcing more than 27,000 people to evacuate and scorching thousands of acres.

Ventura County Fire officials said the larger blaze, known as the "Thomas Fire," broke out Monday evening east of Santa Paula, located about 60 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The fire has grown to 45,000 acres and has destroyed 150 structures, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

"The prospects for containment are not good,” Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said at a news conference. “Really, Mother Nature is going to decide when we have the ability to put it out because it is pushing hard with the wind.”

After initial reports of a fatality, county fire Capt. Steve Kaufmann said a dead dog but no person was found in an overturned car. Lorenzen said at a news conference Tuesday a battalion fire chief was injured in a car crash, but not seriously hurt.

There is zero percent containment of the fire which has now grown to 70 square miles, officials said. Over 1,000 firefighters are battling the fire, and power outages have been reported in Santa Paula, Camarillo, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

"This fire is very dangerous and spreading rapidly, but we'll continue to attack it with all we've got. It's critical residents stay ready and evacuate immediately if told to do so," California Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement while declaring a state of emergency in Ventura County.

Southern California Edison said nearly 180,000 customers in the Ventura County area were without service.Ventura County Fire Public Information Officer Rick Macklin told Fox News around 8,700 homes have been evacuated so far.

The fire is currently burning chaparral, a brush that has not burned in 20 years. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

"The fire growth is just absolutely exponential," Lorenzen said. "All that firefighters can do when we have winds like this is get out ahead, evacuate people, and protect structures."

Authorities say Ventura, a city of over 100,000 people 12 miles away, is expected to feel the effects of the fire soon.
Thomas Aquinas College, a school with about 350 students, has also been evacuated."

A psychiatric hospital burned to the ground as the blaze roared through Ventura County, Fox 11 reported. The Vista del Mar Hospital. treats patients with mental health problems, chemical dependency and veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome.

"Our goal is to keep the public as safe and informed as possible," Lorenzen said, adding that conditions are "about as bad as they can be for fire spread."

Evacuation shelters have been set up at the Miners Building at the Ventura County Fairgrounds and Nordhoff High School, Fox 11 reported.

Residents located outside the evacuation zone watched the blaze shift along the nearby hills overnight, and debated whether they should stay or go.

“I just hope we’re all right,” Taylor Penny told the Los Angeles Times.

Nearby, Eddie Barragan and his wife Maria told the Times they were watching the fire for hours they wanted inside their home.

Barragan, who told the newspaper he was an iron worker who worked as a wildlife firefighter, was studying the flames and paying attention to how the wind shifted.

“If it comes over this next ridge, or the wind shifts, it takes one ember to get on one of these houses, and there it goes,” he told the Times.

As firefighters battled the "Thomas Fire," a second blaze broke out around 40 miles east on the north edge of Los Angeles that is threatening portions of the Sylmar and Lakeview Terrace neighborhoods and charring more than 4,000 acres, according to Fox 11.

The "Creek Fire" was first reported as a 100-acre fire but quickly grew, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said. There were mandatory evacuations issued for 2,500 homes as red flag and high wind warnings continue in the area.

As if fire crews weren't busy enough, a third blaze dubbed the "Rye Fire" broke out near Rye Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, which is now at 200 acres and is zero percent contained.

Interstate 5, known as the Golden State Freeway, was closed in both directions at the 126 Freeway because of the blaze, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office Said.

The National Weather Service said winds of 43 mph with gusts over 60 mph have been reported in the area, and are expected to continue throughout the day.

"Damaging #SantaAnaWinds and very critical fire weather conditions today and again late Wed night-Thu," the weather service said on Twitter. "Main impacts include downed trees/powerlines, blowing dust, power outages, and very rapid fire spread."

Typical of fall, the Santa Ana winds are spawned by high pressure over the Great Basin that sends air flowing toward Southern California where it speeds up as it squeezes down through mountain passes and canyons and blows out toward the coast.

My deepest apologies. This is what I get for writing after my bedtime.

As for no "inch-by-inch examination of Mount Nebo", the simple reason is that it's located in Jordan, and it's on the border with Israel. That in itself makes any archaeology of the area dicey at best, assuming you could get permission from the Jordanian authorities at all. Remember, you're looking for artifacts that would be not only of great historical value, but of great national value to Israel. It could be evidence of the historical accuracy of 2nd Macc which would confirm the presence of the First Temple in Jerusalem, which is the exact opposite of the message the Guardians of the Temple Mount want people to believe.

Any such archaeology will have to wait until after Jordan falls in the next war.

Ah, that explains why Mt. Nebo isn't crawling with archaeologists and all sorts of other experts.

I thought that John was beheaded in Jerusalem until I saw that EWTN programme. To be honest, I think my opinion was based on the old movie where St. John's head was served to Herod on a platter. Maybe the platter was Hollywood adding some special effects to history.

My apologies to Hollywood. The only scene I remember from that movie is the one where the servant took the cover off the platter to reveal St. John's head and the women screamed.

I think that there was a palace attached to the fortress where John was imprisoned so Herod must have been staying there at that time.

Country's Olympic Committee suspended from upcoming games in South Korea over 'systemic manipulation' of doping rules. December 5, 2017

    more on Sport

The International Olympic Committee has banned Russia from competing in next year's Winter Olympics in South Korea over doping allegations.

The Russian Olympic Committee has been suspended from the upcoming games in Pyeongchang, but Russian athletes will still be able to compete "under strict conditions", the IOC said in a statement.

The decision comes after a 17-month investigation found "the systemic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system in Russia", as well as during the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

"This was an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport," Thomas Bach, IOC president, said in a statement.

Vitaly Mutko, Russia's sport minister, and his deputy, Yuri Nagornykh, also received lifetime bans from participating in any future Olympics.

Alexander Zhukov, ROC president, has also been suspended as a member of the IOC, while Dmitry Chernyshenko, former CEO of Russia's Sochi Olympics organising committee, has been removed from the commission coordinating the 2022 games in Beijing.

Russian officials will also not receive accreditation for the upcoming Games, the IOC said.

WATCH Sports Doping: The Endless Chase

Russia will have to reimburse the IOC for the investigations it conducted into the doping allegations. The IOC also ordered Moscow to pay $15m to establish an Independent Testing Authority to aid the global anti-doping system.

The IOC said it may partially or completely lift the ROC's suspension as of the start of the PyeongChang Olympics Closing Ceremony next year, "provided these decisions are fully respected and implemented".

In 2016, a report by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found that more than 1,000 Russian athletes were involved in or benefited from a state-sponsored plan to hide positive doping tests.

The cover-up dated back to at least 2011, WADA said, and affected athletes competing at the 2012 Olympics, 2013 world athletics championships and 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were involved.

The athletes competed in more than 30 sports, including football, the report found.

At the time, WADA called on the IOC to bar Russia from participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

The country's track and field team were banned from participating in Rio de Janeiro.

The entire Russian Paralympic team was also banned from the 2016 Paralympic Games. Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee president, called Russia's anti-doping system "broken, corrupted and entirely compromised".
