    Moscow’s Last Stand

So the Kremlin made a stand in Syria. This is Moscow’s faustian bargain: Assad, denounced by both Obama and Trump, remains in place for now; the Astana peace process is directed from Moscow and Teheran; and Russia’s military has accomplished its first successful power projection operation outside the Soviet borders since the debacle in Afghanistan decades ago.

Russia has restored its strained relationship with Turkey—Ankara is even buying Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. Turkey is also proceeding with the Turkish Stream pipeline project despite Western sanctions. One might argue that Russo-Turkish interests collide in Syria and the Black Sea area, but Ankara’s anti-Americanism may prevail in the short to medium term.

Even staunch U.S. ally Israel warmed up to Moscow after Obama’s Iran deal. Bringing Iranian influence to the Golan, and emboldening Hezbollah at the Jewish state’s doorstep, pressed a Jerusalem-Moscow dialogue. The Putin-Netanyahu relationship remains strong, despite a massive Russian military deployment in Syria which threatens Israel’s air dominance over the Levant.

Putin also courted Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Egypt and Russia jointly supported General Khalifa Haftar’s power aspirations in Libya, whereas the U.S. State Department still backs the powerless Tripoli government.

Finally, in Iran, Russia now enjoys the right to temporary air base landing and refueling in Hamadan, and the ability to fire missiles through Iranian airspace from the Caspian Sea into Syria. The decades-old cooperation between Tehran and Moscow against the United States, its Sunni Arab allies and Israel is going strong.

Conclusions: American Choices in the Middle East

The United States’ shale revolution coincides with American war fatigue and diminishing international involvement. President Donald J. Trump has denounced global democracy and nation-building ideological crusades, and apparently seeks Putin’s partnership. However, the Washington establishment (including the Republican Congressional leadership) disagree, viewing Russia as an implacable global adversary.

Whether America’s disengagement will end, we do not know. History teaches us that the United States is a global power and will be dragged into major future power competitions, including with Russia, China and Iran. But without articulating coherent, credible policy goals; without improving its key relations, it may lose post-Cold War U.S. regional predominance positions, including in the Middle East. Supporting the Saudis in Yemen, cooperating with Iraq against ISIS, and a new Israeli-Palestinian “peace plan” do not yet amount to a coherent regional strategy.

This lack of coherence will complicate support for U.S. allies in the Gulf and Israel, and will further undermine relations with key Arab ally Egypt. Ultimately, America’s global standing will suffer, as Russia with its languishing economy, which is only one-fourteenth of America’s, prevails over the U.S. superpower in a key global geostrategic theater.

I think to say who is the good guy and who is the bad one is almost impossible. There are so many colliding interest and intensions which make the situations in many regions of the world very complex. As a religious person you can see how the devil is working on the big chaos to install the antichrist.

It has already been discussed a few times in other threads and I can not see putin as the clearly evil.
From my point of view the behaviour of russia is a reaction on things going on around them. Putin anticipates on a tactically and strategically level, which I can understand from Russia´s point of view. I don´t say they are doing the right thing but I can understand why they do what they do.
I don´t believe that Russia will do the first strike but not only Gorbatschow spoke about a third world war more than once. The geostrategic pressure is felt as strong by the Russians and that is of course very dangerous.

independent.co.uk: Vladimir Putin says all big Russian businesses should be ready for war production

Also the interactions in the Middle East can not easily be divided into right and wrong. The strengthening of Saudi-Arabia in cooperation with Israel and others, probably to attack Iran in the near future, will plunge the whole region much more in chaos as this is currently the case anyway.
Op-ed calls on Israel to nuke Iran (the thing with Germany in this article I can´t believe :))
Iran-backed militia in Syria says it’s ‘fully prepared’ to battle Israel

There are a lot more explosive conflicts of interest in the middle east and of course North Korea (what include geostrategical interests of China etc).

But probably that´s the chaos we are waiting for, those who wait for the warning to occur.

    Steve79,

I understand what you are saying. The answer is Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Our Savior, peace will never truly reign on Earth until he returns.

I think it possible that we are getting close to the war spoken of in Ezekiel 38/39. I just found the following video from a protestant preacher who was born an Arab. I think it is very well done and he presents the case for the possibility of this war occurring soon, he explains the reason for this current development as a power play by Russia. I suggest that you watch up until the 32:25 mark, this is the point where the prophecy part of the sermon has ended and what follows in his sermon is not Catholic teaching,

These are the articles which the preacher references in his video:

Ynetnews News - Putin holds 'victory summit' in Russia ...
Is Iran Trying to Bring Islamic End-of-Days in Syria?
Putin crowned 'world's energy czar' with Saudis bowing to ...

Bruno Cornnachiola appears to have been told about this war from Our Lady of Revelation in my opinion also.

    Carol55,
the connection to prophecies he made, was new for me and is very very interesting. Thank you! (y)

But I don´ t agree with all of his political conclusions. Of course he shows that he knows and think about the many different aspects.

That Iran wants to bring Islamic end-of-days I can comprehend. I read about the Islamic State that it also believes to be in the end of days and that Isis takes part of its self-legitimation out of Islamic prophecies. That means Isis (Sunnis) is also waiting for the Islamic messiah.

One reason for Russia to defend the syrian government is the simple fact that there is Russia´s only military base for marine forces (since 1971) with access to the Mediterranean Sea. By the way that is one of the most obvious explanations for Russia´s behavior regarding the annexation of the Krim. There is their only marine base with accesse to the black sea. This military components Russia can´t let go.

Nerverteheless one of the main intensions of foreign policy always is about access to ressources. Regarding this there is no difference between Russia, EU and USA.

Did anyone see this interview with Thomas Friedman of the NYT on CNBC this morning? I caught part of it. He said that the situation between Iran and Israel is hotting up, that Israel has been buying submarines some of which are likely in the Persian Gulf and armed with cruise missiles.

North Korea fires ICBM into Japanese waters
By Katherine Lam, Nicole Darrah | Fox News

Fox News confirms North Korea fires ballistic missile
U.S. officials confirm South Korean media reports that North Korea conducted missile test; Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.

North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) around 1:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the first such launch from the rogue regime in more than two months, a U.S. official confirmed to Fox News.

The missile, believed to be an ICBM by the Pentagon based on initial assessments, was launched from Sain Ni in North Korea and flew roughly 620 miles before landing in the Sea of Japan.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, which first reported the launch, said the missile launch happened around 3 a.m. local time in North Korea. South Korea’s military had reportedly staged a “precision strike” missile exercise in response.

North Korea has been working hard to perfect “re-entry” technology to one day have a warhead be able to survive re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

It was determined by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) that the missile "did not pose a threat to North America, our territories or our allies," Pentagon spokesman Col. Robert Manning III told Fox News.

Manning, in an earlier statement, said: "We are in the process of assessing the situation, and we will be providing additional details when available.”

TIMELINE OF 2017 NORTH KOREA MISSILE AND NUCLEAR TESTS

The ICBM flew nearly 2,800 miles into space, according to Yonhap. NASA's International Space Station only orbits the Earth from 250 miles into space.

North Korea has now test-launched three ICBMs in its history. Tuesday's missile flew 1,000 miles higher than the regime's first launch on July 4.

    More on North Korea...
President Trump told reporters Tuesday that the missile launch "is a situation that we will handle," and added the U.S. will "take care of it." The president was briefing on the launch while is was still in the air, press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted earlier in the day.

This is the first missile launch since North Korea fired an intermediate-range KN-17 on Sept. 15 that flew over Japan's Hokkaido Island before splashing into the Pacific Ocean. There have been signs indicating Kim Jong Un’s regime was planning a missile launch in recent days.

Japan’s Kyodo News reported Monday the Japanese government detected radio signals pointing to a possible missile test in the near future. However, satellite images did not show a missile or movable launch pad.

North Korea's Sept. 15 missile launch flew 2,300 miles out, putting the U.S. island territory of Guam within its range. Kim previously threatened to strike the island with four medium-range ballistic missiles in August, but ultimately stepped away from the plan.

North Korea’s lull in missile launches made October the only month a test wasn’t conducted since the start of the year. Between February and September, the regime tested a missile an average of every two weeks. This is also the first provocation since Trump designated North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism.

NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM HAS GROWN WITH EACH KIM REGIME

South Korean unification minister Cho Myoung-gyon told foreign correspondents in Seoul on Tuesday that North Korea is on the verge of achieving full nuclear capability with an intercontinental ballistic missile that could carry a nuclear warhead, according to Yonhap News Agency.

A global map which shows the estimated range of North Korea's missiles. (AP Photo)

“North Korea has been developing its nuclear weapons at a faster-than-expected pace. We cannot rule out the possibility that North Korea could announce its completion of a clear force within one year," Cho said.

Hawaii officials announced Wednesday the beginning of monthly siren tests, starting Friday. The tests would be conducted to prepare islanders for a possible nuclear missile attack by North Korea. The tests would be the first since the Cold War.

Fox News' Lucas Tomlinson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Investors should worry about war between Israel and Iran, warns Pulitzer Prize-winner Tom Friedman
    • Investors should be concerned about war breaking out between Israel and Iran, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Thomas Friedman said.

    https://www.cnbc.com/video/2017/11/...-warns-about-war-between-israel-and-iran.html

Investors should be concerned about a potential war between Israel and Iran that could spread far beyond the Israeli border, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Thomas Friedman said on Tuesday.

"From an investor point of view, if I'm ranking my event risk, North Korea is No. 1, but Iran versus ... Israel in the Syria-Lebanon theater, that is definitely high up there," he told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Tuesday. "People better pay attention to that. That one can come out of nowhere."

The best-selling author, who began his career covering the Middle East and writes the "Foreign Affairs" column for The New York Times, is concerned because he sees little standing in the way of a confrontation between Israel and Iran which has long called for the destruction of the Jewish state.

The Quds Force, an Iranian military group active throughout the region, has established a foothold in the Golan Heights, a disputed territory on the Syrian-Israeli border, Friedman notes. Further, recent reports suggest Iran is building a permanent base in Syria, where it has backed President Bashar Assad in a five-year civil war.

"If that happens, the Israelis are going to go after it," Friedman said.

    Arab Peninsula and Persian Gulf

source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Friedman acknowledges that the Iranians are skilled at advancing their regional agenda through proxy forces. But he says Tehran may be taking for granted its ability to wage war on Israel's ground mainly through its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, whose southern stronghold straddles the northern Israeli border.

That is because Israel has been bulking up its submarine fleet over the last 10 years, according to Friedman.

"They've been buying submarines, and I guarantee you those submarines are in the Persian Gulf right now and they have cruise missiles on them," he said.

The entrance to the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, is one of the two most important strategic passages for the oil industry. Last year, 19 million barrels a day of petroleum products passed through the strait, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Across the Persian Gulf from Iran is Saudi Arabia, which has entered into a tacit alliance with Israel against Tehran, said Friedman.

"Anyone who thinks this war is just going to be the next war between Iran and Israel, is just going to be in the Golan or in South Lebanon, I think is fooling themselves," he said. "I think it's one of the most dangerous theaters in the world today."

    World oil transit chokepoints

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has become a "kingmaker" in the region, Friedman said.

"The Israelis have to go to him and say, 'Hey, you better restrain these Iranians. Don't let them get any closer,'" Friedman said. "We have to go to him now that we may be keeping some troops on the ground in Syria."

But Friedman believes Israel cannot count on Russia to restrain Iran, he said.

The Kremlin, which is also allied with Assad in Syria's civil war, has been able to extend its influence on the Arab world on the cheap, he says. The understanding is Russia provides air power while Iran and Hezbollah handle ground operations in Syria.

So far I did not read anything from the shutdown.
As far as I know the protests started 2 or 3 weeks ago. Protests have been triggered when the Minister of Justice modified the text of parliamentary oath. Protesters accuse him of blasphemy.
I think by shut down the internet the government wants to make the organization of protests more difficult.
Because of the mixture of radical islamic forces and excistence of nuclear weapons, a little worry about Pakistan always is appropriate.

Israeli missiles hit army base near Damascus: Reports
Syrian state media says air defence forces intercept missiles in raid on army base, blaming Israel for the attack. December 2, 2017

    more on Middle East
Israeli missiles attacked a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defence system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

The "blatant assault" led to material losses at the site in the countryside around the capital, it said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of the attack.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the missile attack was likely carried out by the Israeli military and targeted several government military bases in Al Kiswah on the southwest outskirts of Damascus.

Sources told Al Jazeera that the Israeli raid was aimed at government military sites and positions of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and that the sound of large explosions caused by the raid was heard in Damascus and its surroundings.

The Observatory further reported power outages in many areas of the Syrian capital.

Al Qoraish, an Arab newspaper published from London, reported that several Iranian soldiers were killed or wounded in the attack. Al Jazeera was unable to verify the report.

    'Missiles intercepted'
According to Syria's state-run SANA news agency, pro-government forces managed to destroy two of the missiles in a response attack.

"The Israeli enemy fired after midnight at 12:30 several ground-to-ground missiles at a military location in the countryside of Damascus, where our air defences intercepted and destroyed two missiles," SANA cited security sources as saying.

The missile attack was believed to be the latest in a series of Israeli attacks on Syria, where a six-year civil war has devastated much of the country and displaced millions of citizens.

READ MORE Why does Israel keep attacking Syria?

Earlier this year, a senior Israeli official vowed that Israel would bomb Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's palace in Damascus if Iran and Hezbollah continued to expand its sway over the war-torn country.

The Syrian conflict began in March 2011 against the Assad government, but it morphed into a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.

H.R. McMaster: Potential for war with North Korea increases ‘every day’

By Alex Pappas | Fox News December 2, 2017

HR McMaster: Threat from North Korea increases every day
National security adviser speaks out at the Reagan National Security Forum.

H.R. McMaster, President Trump’s national security adviser, said Saturday that the possibility of war with North Korea increases every day the problem over its nuclear program isn’t solved.

“I think it’s increasing every day,” McMaster told Fox News’ Bret Baier at the Reagan National Security Forum in California. “It means we’re in a race. We’re in a race to be able to solve this problem.”

Added McMaster: “There are ways to address this problem short of armed conflict, but it is a race because he’s getting closer and closer and there’s not much time left.”

Last week, North Korea fired its highest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile, flying 1,000 miles higher than during its first ICBM launch in July.

McMaster told Baier that North Korea dictator Kim Jong Un’s nuclear ambitions are the gravest national security threat that America faces.

“The greatest immediate threat to the United States and to the world is the threat posed by the rogue regime in North Korea and his continued efforts to develop a long range nuclear capability,” he said.

McMaster added, “So it’s immensely important that we work together with all of our allies, partners, everyone internationally, to convince Kim Jong Un that the continued pursuit of these capabilities is a dead end for him and his regime.”

TRUMP ON NORTH KOREA MISSILE LAUNCH: 'WE WILL TAKE CARE OF IT'

A senior U.S. official told Fox News on Saturday that the North Korean ballistic missile fired last week did not survive the re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere, but broke up on reentry.

Still, the president’s national security adviser said North Korea is improving every time it conducts a test, even when it fails.

“What is clear is every time – every time -- he conducts a missile launch, a nuclear test, he gets better,” McMaster said. “And whether it’s a success or failure isn’t as important as understanding that over the years he’s been learning from failures, improving, thereby increasing his threat to all of us.”

During the forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, McMaster denied that the recent guilty plea of his predecessor, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, on Friday has rattled allies.

Speaking of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the election, McMaster said: “I’ve seen no evidence of the investigation in any way impeding the important work we’re doing.”

Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.

Former UN missile inspector says North Korea's latest ICBM failed an important phase

A former United Nations missile inspector said Monday that North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile reentry vehicle "did not survive" last week's test, meaning the hermit regime needs more tests.

Video captured from a rooftop camera in Japan appears to show North Korea's Hwasong-14 ICBM reentering the atmosphere, then breaking up and destroying the reentry vehicle.

    ...........
"If the bomb itself were exposed to these very severe conditions, it would be torn apart," said Elleman. "In short, if the reentry vehicle breaks up, the bomb is not going to be useful — and it's not going to detonate."

    https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/31/north-koreas-latest-icbm-test-failed-in-reentry-phase.html

The more testing seems to make the N Korean people the ones in greatest danger ..... of implosion or collapse of region doing the testing.

earthtoangels, Thank you for posting this. I should have highlighted this in the article that I posted. It is stated in the Fox News article also but McMaster made a point that whether a North Korea nuclear test is a failure or not they are improving and therefore I believe that is why McMaster feels that we are in a race and that "...there is not much time left to solve this problem." Thankfully he also stated that, “There are ways to address this problem short of armed conflict...".

Firstly: I wouldn't believe anything emanating from the UN or any of their "Experts"!!
Secondly: The NORKs are obviously way-ahead of where the "Experts" claimed, just months ago, they would be in both Nuke & Missile Development!
Thirdly: Though this could have been a failure it may well have been a self destruct order to keep components from being found and examined or just a rehearsal for an EMP high altitude air burst.
In any case, NORK NUKES & delivery systems will destabilize the Far East and trigger an NUKE Arms Race unless "Steps" are taken .... soon!!

  17. Depends on who you believe. McMaster is probably also being tasked to answer the fears of the S. Koreans and others in the region. "Little rocket man" could also get frustrated with waiting for his perfect weapon of the nuclear type and just let loose with a lot of other stuff in order to save face with his personal build up. There are a lot of suicidal type "leaders" in existence these days, as Satan knows the time is getting shorter each day. I still feel more concern for the locals, his own people, due to the reports of the damage being caused by each "rocket" experiment.

The above link is so very, very interesting. It's only a short read.
    But it's very informative.

One perspective to consider when reflecting on 'little rocket man', is that perhaps - PERHAPS! - he may be afraid of being 'taken-out' by 'big rocket man'. I mean, let's face it, big rocket man has a significant history of deposing, often UNDER FALSE PRETENCES, any 'little rocket man' that he takes a dislike to, think Gaddafi, Saddam and a host of others.

In addition, 'big rocket man' is so temperamental that he has supported - and continues to support, tyrants TYRANTS! such as Pinochet, Deby, Marcos, Mbasogo and my personal fav., king Abdoullah of Saudi Arabian mass-murder fame.

Is it possible then that the behaviour of big rocket man could be construed in such a way by [any] little rocket man (particularly if he doesn't have a rocket when the 'big rocket man' comes calling) - that he had better get one fast!

Agreed, these comments are somewhat tongue-in-cheek but you get the point?!
Big Rocket Man has a significant history of singling out Small Rocket Men; and subsequently wiping them out! The Korean fella may well be a genuine despot, I don't know.

But I do know that I don't trust big rocket man - whether he happen to be republican or democrat. For he is usually "backed" by the free-mason, secularist, black beast, biased-media. And this media always ramps it up; they always advocate war war war! Then the poor, loyal-to his-country, man-on-the -street must go fight these damned wars.

We the masses tend to follow our flags blindly. We need to test everything, question everything ...........particularly when we advocate "steps" to curtail such little rocket men; "steps" that will no doubt include the loss of innocent life; "steps" that will maim children, orphan children, leave children homeless; "steps" that will starve thousands of children.

"Steps" that will injury and kill our own soldiers and deprive their families of their presence.

Seriously, we need to think think think!

China can influence this particular rocket man. China obviously doesnt want a nuclear war on its doorstep. The utilising of diplomacy and the intercession of other countries in this matter is not a sign of weakness; but of leadership and of strength.

Please people, urge your leaders toward diplomacy. Pray to our holy mother in heaven. Say our rosaries.

Sorry for the rant. Also, I don't mean to single out any one poster. This is merely my point of view in the debate and nothing personal. I genuinely believe our leaders are inept. And I further believe their ineptitude stems from a lack of faith. Indeed, if Russia is more and more finding its faith, I fear for where that leaves us here in the secular West. I mean, can we continue to follow our secular leaders into endless wars on the one hand, yet criticise them for butchering our babies in the womb on the other?

jackzokay, Thank you for the post. This thread is about watching - keeping everyone up to date and praying - praying that none of the leaders of the world or anyone in general starts something big. I think that you are correct on many points and praying is what Our Lady told us to do!

I do want to state the following though, as of late, "little rocket man" has demonstrated that he is the most haphazard with his testing of missiles and nuclear weapons. It is not fair what he is doing to his own people, unfortunately there are a lot of unfair things going on in the world right now and I am not suggesting that the USA should be policing the world - it would be nice if the UN did that but so long as Kim Jong Un is endangering the lives of citizens of other countries like Japan and South Korea for example, he has to expect a reaction which you are correct is not going to be good for anyone in the world. In addition, I think China keeps demonstrating that they are not really on our side in this matter. Some people even go so far to say that North Korea is China's proxy, so when China seems to take our side it is only for appearances.

The increasingly tense stand-off between the U.S. and North Korea may have hit a new high this week.

As U.S. and South Korean military units conducted an annual air power exercise over the Korean Peninsula, China’s air force reportedly staged exercises in “routes and areas it has never flown before” over the Yellow and East Seas. The exercise involved reconnaissance planes, fighter jets, an early warning and control aircraft, and a joint operation with surface-to-air missile units.

The South China Morning Post quotes Li Jie, a Beijing-based military expert, as saying the drills were done specifically to send a message to Donald Trump.

“The timing of this high-profile announcement by the [People’s Liberation Army] is also a warning to Washington and Seoul not to provoke Pyongyang any further,” Jie told the Post.

The U.S. and South Korea used over 200 aircraft in their recent drills. North Korea has protested the exercise as an “all out provocation.”

Whether Jie is correct about the intentions of the Chinese air force is tricky to determine at this point. China has previously condemned North Korea for launching test missiles and, three months ago, backed U.N. sanctions against the country after a significant nuclear test.

Trump’s view of how China has reacted to North Korea’s actions, as judged by his tweets, has run the gamut. In early November, he wrote “My meetings with President Xi Jinping were very productive on both trade and the subject of North Korea. He is a highly respected and powerful representative of his people.” He praised the country for sending an envoy to speak with the North Korean government, but seemed frustrated earlier this month by the lack of results from that meeting.
