La Plata, MD - On a split vote taken during their Sept. 19 meeting, the Charles County Commissioners approved a resolution to honor an African-American woman killed 54 years ago by a wealthy white county resident. The proposal forwarded by Commissioner Ken Robinson [D – District 1] would commemorate the 1963 death of Hattie Carroll by naming the pedestrian walkway running through the Charles County Government complex in her honor.

Carroll was working as a barmaid at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore Feb. 9, 1963 when she was attacked by 24-year-old William Zantzinger of Charles County. The hotel was hosting an event dubbed “The Spinsters’ Ball.” Zantzinger, who was reportedly drunk, began peppering Carroll with racial insults and assaulted her with a cane. She sustained severe head injuries and died hours later. Zantzinger was charged with second-degree assault. That charge was later reduced to manslaughter. Attorneys for the wealthy landowner-tobacco farmer were able to get Zantzinger’s trial moved to Hagerstown. He received a six-month sentence. The sentence was handed down the same day as the historic March on Washington. One of the march’s more famous attendees, singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, read accounts of the case and wrote a song based on it. “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” was released on Dylan’s “Times They Are a-Changin’ ” album, which was released in 1964.

Robinson said the gesture of naming something in the county in Carroll’s honor was appropriate because she was killed by “a racist who called Charles County home. This is a way to acknowledge how wrong it was.” According to Robinson, members of Carroll’s family have agreed to come to La Plata for a ceremony tentatively scheduled for next month.

Commissioner Debra Davis [D - District 2] (pictured, left) took issue with Robinson’s proposal. “No disrespect to the Carroll family, but we need to honor someone from Charles County,” said Davis. She noted that during the early 1960s when Charles County was segregated, local African-Americans, including her father, were clamoring for change and proactive in the Civil Rights movement. “There has been push-back [to Robinson’s resolution],” Davis noted. “The community does not support this.”

Commissioner Amanda Stewart [D - District 3] (pictured, right) sided with Robinson, calling the naming of the walkway a move to “reach out and acknowledge a wrong.” Stewart added that “there is not a limit of the people we can recognize. We should think forward. Let’s not say ‘no’ for this walkway.”

Robinson further explained that there will be no monument involved in the project—just a sign designating the pedestrian right-of-way the “Hattie Carroll Walkway.”
Commissioner Bobby Rucci [D - District 4] concurred with Davis that the designation was not a good idea. Davis and Rucci voted opposed while Robinson and Stewart voted in favor. Commissioners’ President Peter Murphy [D] broke the tie and the motion passed.

Pope Leo was eminently orthodox. He described socialists as 'depraved', while one suspects Pope Francis could be one. Pope Leo thought and acted in True Charity, while Pope Francis seems to abide perilously close to ideology and Marxist dialectic.

Regarding the gap between 1884 and 1917, only God knows why, but it corresponds to 33 years, the length of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. That's all I can say.

A great song, but, having read the actual reports of the case, I came to the conclusion it was a bit hard on Zantzinger. His actions, which were not entirely intentional, gained him enormous notoriety. Far more deliberate evils nowadays can be washed away in 'rehab', it seems.

Dylan was very young when he wrote this song, but he continued to perform it throughout his career. While I enjoyed many of these performances myself, I wonder whether he ought to have done so, or I listened. Certainly, whenever I hear this song now, I feel some sympathy for the now deceased Zantzinger.

Yellowstone supervolcano could blow faster than thought, destroy all of mankind
    Fox News4 hours ago
Arizona State University researchers have analyzed minerals around the supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park and have come to a startling conclusion. It could blow much faster than previously expected, potentially wiping out life as we know it.

According to National Geographic, the researchers, Hannah Shamloo and Christy Till, analyzed minerals in fossilized ash from the most recent eruption. What they discovered surprised them – the changes in temperature and composition only took a few decades, much faster than the centuries previously thought.

“We expected that there might be processes happening over thousands of years preceding the eruption,” said Till said in an interview with the New York Times.

NASA WANTS TO PREVENT THE YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO FROM DESTROYING THE US

The supervolcano last erupted about 630,000 years ago, according to National Geographic. Prior to that, it was 1.3 million years ago, per a report from ZME Science.

If another eruption were to take place, the researchers found that the supervolcano would spare almost nothing in its wrath. It would shoot 2,500 times more material than Mount St. Helen did in 1980 and could cover most of the continguous U.S. in ash, possibly putting the planet into a volcanic winter.

The new discovery, which was presented in August after a previous version of the study, comes after another study in 2011 which found the magma reservoir in Yellowstone has moved considerably, gaining about 10 inches in seven years.

"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high," the University of Utah's Bob Smith, an expert in Yellowstone volcanism, told National Geographic six years ago.

    'UFO' SPOTTED OVER YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO?

Despite the concerns about an eruption happening relatively soon, Shamloo told The Times that more research needed to be done before a definite conclusion could be drawn.

In June, the supervolcano was hit with more than 400 earthquakes in one week, though researchers cautioned it was nothing nothing to be alarmed about.

For its part, NASA is working on a way to prevent the supervolcano from destroying mankind, including trying to cool the magma before it spills over.

I have long thought that Yellowstone exploding might very well be the reason America is hardly mentioned in any approved prophecies. It would totally annihilate us.

    DeGaulle,

If many of the prophecies in Desmond Birch's book on the end times are correct we will have a man-made destruction before the world explodes. In addition, I think that there are a few more prophecies in scripture which need to come to fruition first.

That got answered earlier. Now my comment is on an essay that compared the 100 years to the book of Job. If you'll recall, God withdrew His protection from Job and allowed him to be afflicted. However, the afflictions didn't happen all at once, but in two separate periods. It may be that this will be the case here -- beginning in 1917, but ending in 2029.

Russia accuses U.S. of illegally building up Eastern Europe forces
    October 12, 2017 Reuters Staff

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia accused the United States on Thursday of illegally building up its forces in Poland and the Baltic region, saying it had quietly deployed an entire armoured division in breach of the main pact that governs Moscow’s relations with NATO.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the alleged breach had occurred when Russia was conducting large-scale military exercises called ‘Zapad-2017” with ally Belarus last month.

Major-General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the ministry, said in a statement that troops from the U.S. 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team were meant to have rotated out of the region leaving their equipment to be manned by colleagues from the U.S. 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.

Instead, Konashenkov said, the 2nd Armored Brigade had quietly deployed to Poland with its own armoured vehicles, while tanks and armoured vehicles from the 3rd Brigade had stayed and could be manned within 2 hours by bringing in troops from the U.S. Ramstein Base in Germany.

“So despite declarations from NATO and the U.S. about ‘the insignificant nature’ of troops concentrated along the Russian border a mechanised division, rather than a brigade, has been deployed,” said Konashenkov.

An article on Pope Leo's vision and when the 100 years began. It states that on october 16, 1917, St. Maximilian Kolbe saw Masons parading, holding signs that said that "In 2017 Lucifer will rule the Vatican". He started the Militia Immaculata that night.

Deadly plague epidemic rages in Madagascar
    By Leslie Roberts Oct. 9, 2017 , 11:50 AM

An epidemic of the deadliest form of plague, pneumonic, has hit major cities and towns in Madagascar and is spreading fast. As of 7 October, the Madagascar Health Ministry reported that 343 people had been infected and 42 died, and numbers are rising rapidly.

A massive response is underway, and the World Health Organization (WHO) is on high alert. This poor island nation is regularly hit by plague outbreaks, but they are typically the relatively less dangerous bubonic form, transmitted from rats to humans by fleas, and occur largely in remote areas. Bubonic plague killed an estimated 60% of Europe’s population during the Black Death in the 14th century.

What’s particularly alarming now is that pneumonic plague is easily transmitted person to person by coughing, and the outbreak has reached relatively densely populated urban areas, including the capital, Antananarivo, commonly known as Tana. Left untreated with antibiotics, pneumonic plague is 100% fatal. (Both forms are caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis; pneumonic plague develops when a person with bubonic plague is not treated, and the infection spreads to the lungs.)

The so-called index case—the first case to be described by health workers—was a 31-year-old man with malarialike symptoms who traveled by bush taxi from a remote area through the capital. He died in transit on 27 August. Large clusters of cases then began to appear along his route. The disease took off when it reached Tana, where schools have been closed and public events cancelled. The outbreak has now hit 20 districts in 10 regions.

WHO learned of the outbreak on 23 September, following the 11 September death of a 47-year-old woman in a hospital in the capital. Health officials are carefully monitoring the contacts of a basketball coach from the Seychelles, who was in Madagascar for a regional tournament, contracted the disease, and died. Reports are conflicting on whether he died in Tana or at home.

WHO has assessed the risk of national spread high, regional spread moderate, and international spread low, but those rankings are being reassessed. Plague can be cured if antibiotics are administered immediately; on 6 October WHO delivered 1.2 million doses of antibiotics and released $1.5 million to fight the outbreak. More drugs should be on the way soon.

Plague is endemic in many countries—the United States had 16 cases of bubonic plague in 2015—but Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Peru are the countries that frequently have serious outbreaks.

Paramedics authorized to give vaccines amid San Diego hepatitis A outbreak

Vaccination efforts have seen nearly 1,400 doses distributed this far, but such efforts may not see immediate results. (AP)

Amid warnings from health officials that it could take years to rid of California’s deadly hepatitis A outbreak, San Diego has granted paramedics the authority to administer vaccines to the area’s at-risk populations.

Under the special measure, which was approved on Wednesday, paramedics will be able to deliver hepatitis A doses under the supervision of nurses and at vaccination events geared toward at-risk populations, The Los Angeles Times reported.

“Paramedics already have basic skills in terms of delivering injections, and this approval allows us to give them training to do vaccination but only in very specific settings with very specific oversight,” Dr. Kristi Koening, director of the San Diego Emergency Medical Service, told the news outlet.

Koening had made the request on Sept. 20 in response to the outbreak that has killed 17 and sickened more than 500. The contagious disease has inflicted mainly the homeless communities in San Diego, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles counties.

People without symptoms can carry the illness, and it is spread through contact with an infected person’s feces. The virus can spread through food, objects, sex or sharing drug paraphernalia. San Diego has already implemented power-washing streets and installing hand-washing stations, and plans to open an encampment for the homeless equipped with tents, showers, restrooms, food security and social services.

Vaccination efforts have seen nearly 1,400 doses distributed this far, but such efforts may not see immediate results.

Dr. Monique Foster, a medical epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said it’s not unusual for an outbreak of this size to last more than a year.

“I don’t think the worst is over,” Jessica Randolph, Santa Cruz County public health manager, said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

OK. Not sure this is relevant but in 2003 we went to Yellowstone. My first trip West. I was walking along the wooden sidewalks looking at that bubbling ground and interested in the geysers. Naively I might add. I honestly didn't know anything about Yellowstone except for Old Faithful exploding at regular intervals. I was enjoying being there when suddenly I had a terrible sense of alarm. Out of nowhere. A kind of "get out of here now!!" Overwhelming sense of danger. Bizarre but scary. I didn't feel at ease til we were well away from there.
I have occasionally insights or warnings or I suppose you'd call them word of knowledge. Not psychic but perhaps a charism of the Holy Spirit. I don't even recognize them as such at the time. It is only later I suddenly get it when they come true. Not sure really but these various warnings or nudges do often come true. . I ponder this where Yellowstone is concerned because everyone assured me it was "dead" until this year when suddenly ominous little twinges began. Swarms of small earthquakes. I hope and pray my sense of alarm was just me being over sensitive and totally wrong.

I have never heard this before. I would think if this were accurate then it would have been BIG news the past few years and reported about all over Catholic circles.

I just did a search for this. There is nothing written about this quote (that I can find) before the year 2017. It appears to originate at a questionable website. I will omit the name out of charity, but this person is generally not taken seriously by the traditional Catholic community as there are numerous problems surrounding him.

The story about St Maximillian Kolbe and the Masons is true. I read it long before 2000 when I first discovered St Maximillian. It was the inspiration for him to start the Immaculata ministry. I bet it is on the website of his order. They are Franciscans of the Immaculata although that may not be their official name.
