Extreme cold and snow pound the northern hemisphere as some scientists warn of the potential for ice age conditions.

    • In Russia Moscow celebrated the coldest orthodox Christmas in 125 years.
    • Snowfall paralyzed the city of Istanbul, Turkey.
    • Massive snow falls across the Balkans, Italy and Greece.
    • Dozens of Europeans have since frozen to death.
    • Northern Albania villages have been cut off by 120 cm of snow.
    • A temperature of -62°C (-80°F) was recorded in Chanty-Mansijsk (Russia).
Arctic conditions spread deep into the Mediterranean

These are all odd events when considering the “consensus” forecasts made 15 years ago, which warned that snow and ice would become rare.

In fact many scientists warned that Mediterranean conditions would spread into northern Europe. Lately, however, just the opposite has happened: Arctic conditions have plunged down into the Mediterranean!

I hear that there is to be heavy snowfall here over the next two weeks?

The man made global warming crowd are saying that this has been caused by warming in the arctic circle is pushing the cold air southwards (all the way to Greece?).

We've had a very mild winter but it looks like we're in for a very cold snap on Friday. I'm not sure that the snow will reach us, although, Padraig, those of you in the North East might not escape.

I love the snow. The Akita breed are Husky types..Spitzes ...and used to pull sledges in the Northern Japanese Islands. They will be in heaven.

I think its minus 20 C in Moscow at the moment. I would die.

Brrrr! The very look of snow gives me the shivers. If it does snow here on Friday, I won't put my nose outside the door from the first sign of a snowflake until Sunday Mass. And if it's still icy on Sunday, I won't venture out again after Mass until the following Sunday.

I saw a report that even the Greek islands had snow. Ouch!

Well, it has proven to be a little mild for us this winter with only one sub-zero (F) day so far. But we have had snow cover since the first week in December and after the snowfall today will have had 30 inches of snow so far in January.:barefoot::coffee: For us east of Lake Ontario, it is par for the course.:)

Safe in the Refuge of Our Lady of Snows!

I had to shovel the snow on Sunday but it was 8 degrees Fahrenheit when I got up so I waited until it got up to 13 before heading out. It was 10 degrees when I got back from adoration last night but it will be mid-50's tomorrow.

Zero is about minus 17. Do your feet freeze to the ground if you stand still in that kind of cold?

8 degrees is minus 13 in our money. My joints would seize up. I bought a snow shovel a few years ago when we had a heavy snow fall. Shovelling snow is backbreaking work. We haven't had more than a light dusting since, thank God.

The good news is when it is that cold that means the snow is light and fluffy. So it was as easy as shoveling can get.

It is also the biggest cause of heart attacks so be very careful before attempting to shovel snow

Yes, we had the light, fluffy kind one year that looked like little polystyrene balls falling from the sky. Pretty to look at and soft and crunchy to walk on but it stayed on the ground for a long time. We normally get the big flakes that melt nearly as soon as they hit the ground. Even if it doesn't melt as it falls, it's the kind of snow that turns to slush within a day - ugly and dirty as it melts.

Good advice. I only shovelled enough to let me open the shed door.

It felt colder here today although with no cloud cover we could see the sun for a change. 8 C which is about 46 F.
