Indeed, Joe. And this gives me an opportunity to post on this very unfortunate thread, my favourite music video of all time:

Lovely David - I noticed there were not too many black faces in Mac's hall of fame.

The Cardinals elect the Pope and it isn't anti-Church or anti-God to say so. They can pray to the Holy Spirit to guide their conscience when making their choice and they use their God given free will to follow or ignore their conscience. Considering some of the Popes we have had and the scandal they have given even to selling the papacy, I believe that God allows man to choose the Pope and then the Holy Spirit protects the Church and if the reigning pope doesn't respond to God's grace, the Spirit works through Bishops, saints or even ordinary Catholics.

I see parallels between Pope Honorius and Pope Francis. Honorius was condemned initially for following advice that it would be better for Church unity to compromise on how a heresy was addressed. He was later deemed to not have personally embraced the heresy but the condemnation stood because by failing to clearly defend the faith he facilitated the spread of heresy. He got off the hook because it was decided that his letter did not meet the ex-cathedra requirements.

Wow! Brlliant! You are so spot on! I believe the same will happen to this pope. He will come around when he realizes who the enemy really is.

I don't want to be spot on. I hope and pray that I'm wrong. Both Honorius and Sergius who influenced him meant well because they thought they were bringing heretics back into the fold and keeping the emperor happy by suppressing the wording that would have clearly defined the Truth. Many were subsequently led into heresy and there was a showdown leading to Pope Martin 1 being dragged away in chains and dying in exile.

We must pray that Pope Francis will stop hiding behind Bishops' conflicting interpretations and do his duty as Peter's successor by making sure that the Church, speaking with one voice, upholds Christ's teaching on marriage.

In addition to the above, the notorious letter from Pope Honorius and the trouble it caused was used by the Protestants to justify their rejection of Papal infallibility. That's the kind of problem that fuzzy, crowd pleasing language can present long after the dust appears to have settled.

Isn't this exactly what is happening now?

"Pope Francis has always been clear about his distaste for those who see no room for improvement and whose obsession with intrigue and gossip halt the advance of truth and justice and mercy. This is the real "conversation killer" -Joe Crozier

Interesting BrianK. Fr Charles Fiore, who taught at the Angelicum? Seminary in Rome, told me that the catechism section on homosexuality was rewritten some 6 times because of errors. Probably by Cardinal Shonborn.
