I won't hide my bias in this election: I think Trump is the best chance of beating Hillary in the general election. Perhaps you disagree. That's fine. All news and view are welcome. Just don't start shilling for Bernie or Hillary as Catholics could never vote for either of them. :)

Listening to the debate in South Carolina. So far, Jeb wants to attack Assad and start a war with Russia. Rubio lied about Assad using chemical weapons on civilians in Syria. And the debate isn't half way thru. Trump is the only one so far telling the truth about Syria, ISIS and Russia.

Donald Trump Nears 50 Percent in New National Poll As Marco Robot Powers Down:

The first national poll released after the Donald’s triumph in New Hampshire suggests that the chattering classes might not know what they’re chattering about. Morning Consult finds Trump polling at 44 percent, with Texas senator Ted Cruz in a distant second at 17 percent. Florida senator Marco Rubio, the Establishment’s great Hispanic hope as of one week ago, has fallen to 10 percent. Rubio’s decision to come out as a robot built by Glenn Beck appears to have cost him dearly, as he is now tied with Ben Carson — a perpetually sedated amateur Egyptologist who doesn’t even really have a campaign anymore — for third place. The Establishment’s favorite son, Jeb Bush, is two points behind Carson.... http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/02/donald-trump-nears-50-percent-in-new-poll.html#

Trump isn't that bad to me. I may not be a true conservative either, whatever that means. He's a one man Super PAC. If he can win this way, more power to him. I honestly think he is sincere when he says he will work for us. Sometimes we are surprised by people. I thank you for this thread. He looks in control. I have heard that some people think better under pressure and in the midst of chaos. He may be one of them. He has worked with his own money, while the average politician works with someone else's money. Piety is a virtue. This is true. In my opinion, so is simplicity. His faith may be simple to him, in that he doesn't over exaggerate what may happen or how he looks at faith. I personally would like to move onto a new generation, but at this point Trump is at the top of the list so far. I remember as a child, I didn't think Reagan was a religious man. Looking back on it, he wasn't. He had simple faith that wasn't complicated by stuff.

Donald Trump Says He'll put this pro-life judge on the Supreme Court:

During the Republican debate on Saturday night, Donald Trump floated two names as potential nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court: Judge Diane S. Sykes and Judge Bill Pryor.

“We could have a Diane Sykes or a Bill Pryor, we have some fantastic people,” Trump told the audience. Both judges are well-known conservatives serving on the federal level.

    Who is Diane S. Sykes?

Sykes is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She was nominated by George W. Bush and confirmed in 2004. She went to Northwestern University and attended Marquette University Law School. She was dropped as a name for the U.S. Supreme Court under President George W. Bush. She was part of the 2011 panel that held a Chicago ban on firing ranges unconstitutional. Prior to being appointed on the federal court, Sykes served as Justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

    Who is Bill Pryor?

Pryor is a federal judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2003. His nomination was filibustered so in 2004, President Bush installed the former Alabama Attorney General on the court during a congressional recess appointment. Democrats scrutinized Pryor for some of his conservative stands, including on Roe v. Wade. Pryor previously said,
according to confirmation hearing testimony, that Roe was “the worst abomination in constitutional law in history.”

Pope Benedict once said borders must be respected. It's an insult to the legal immigrants that do it the correct way to just ignore the laws. It's a travesty for those in power to not enforce the laws.

I don't think Pope Francis really thought that comment all the way thru. I mean, the Vatican is surrounded by a very large wall after all.

I'm not sure a super tiny country with a wall built hundreds of years ago which is surrounded by Rome is comparable to suggesting building a wall over a thousand miles long to keep out poor people.

The border wall is not designed to keep out poor people. It is designed to keep out illegals and those who pose a security risk to this country. An Ocean didn't stop my ancestors from coming into this country LEGALLY and a wall shouldn't stop others from entering this country legally. Even Marco Rubio was forced to agree with Trump on this isse: http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/18/politics/marco-rubio-donald-trump-pope-comments/

Well, the vast majority of the 'illegals' are poor Mexicans. I agree that something needs to be done to enforce border security, but I'm not so sure that building a huge wall is the most efficient way to do it. That would probably just cause the land traffic to turn into water traffic. Also, forcing Mexico to pay for it, assuming one could force them, is adding insult to injury. I do have sympathy with Trump's remarks about Muslims though. If they are following their religion, then Sharia Law is incompatible with the Constitution, and they should not be let in. Of course, no one seems to care about the Constitution any more, especially the Supreme Court.

"Well, the vast majority of the 'illegals' are poor Mexicans."

That's what I was always told about immigration into California for example, in the media. But when I went there a while back my impression was that the poorest people there were the Americans, while many immigrants weren't that poor at all, especially when it comes to owning essential things like houses.

The homeless guys were nearly all Americans who would work if they could find jobs.

No I think Pope Francis is missing some of the nuances on this issue albeit he is obviously right that every human being should be treated with respect.

He's definitely a threat to a lot of people. I can't imagine that Team Obama and the Neocons have worked so hard at destroying Ukraine and Syria and ramping up a conflict with Putin just to see all that hard warmongering count for nothing if Trump wins. Make no mistake: powerful forces on both the Left and Right will lose a lot of money if Trump wins. The Military-Industrial complex and Big Pharma have been making out like bandits with Obama and the Neocons. That'll end under Trump.

Trump has also been the only candidate who has not demonized Putin:

‘Assassinate Trump’: Violent Threats Going Unchecked on Twitter

This is a title from Brietbart. The greatest headline writer that has ever lived is Matt Drudge. Say it with a few words and leave it at that. But this should be taken serious. He may be an a$$&9^E sometimes, but he does have a family, a very nice family, and should be protected. His children seem smarter than him. This says a lot about him.

His greatest threat is to God's moral law. This is my greatest concern. I don't care if he closes the border, lowers taxes, builds up the military. Our country is morally bankrupt and he can't do a thing about it when his own life is in moral bankruptcy! This is the only thing that matters to me.

If God exposes the powerful to be powerless that is a good thing. I'm a boxing fan. I love boxing. I looked forward to the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight like no other sporting event in a long time. I knew something was wrong when Pacquiao said God was going to bring Mayweather into his hands. Pacquiao, one of the greatest boxers of all time, got schooled by Mayweather. I cringe when someone says this person is evil or that person is evil. American politics has always been mean. I just want to stay out of the hypnotic trance that the media wants to put me in or controlled by a small group of people. The sources in this thread are perfect because they look from the outside in about a system. My hope is that the house of cards crumbles and everything is laid bare. People thought Bush was the anti-christ. People thought 0bama was the anti-christ. Not sure who will be the next anti-christ in america will be.

Just a side note...I had to look it up. Andrew Jackson killed a man in a dual. Maybe he was an anti-christ. The difference here is people are trying to kill Trump.

I see Charlie Johnston is closing down politicla commnet on his site. He comments that his site is spritual rather than political.

But I want to keep this thread open for three reasons. Firstly I think people are open to keeping it open (other wise their would not be so many posts here). Secondly the exchanges seem to me amazingly well mannered and civilised. Thirdly I think there really is a Spiritual Dimension to all this.
